yeah.

just so you know, based on the proposed timing of john, i think i may only be around for the first pick. you’re in charge for the rest. sorry about that. i’ve got a big deal that i’m working on and will be away from the computer most of the afternoon. the only thing i’d say is that jordan danks should be taken if available (both for amusement and because it makes sense at 86) and i’d lean towards position players from the college level in the later rounds. but do whatever you think.

matusz was real tempting, the nats got a steal there

but i have a natural aversion to pitchers and i didn’t see him as a potential “star.” skipworth has big upside and is a premium postion.

not in the mood to do the research,

but would it be an extraordinary draft if the first pitcher wasn’t taken until 9, and only two in the top 10?

may 1, 2008 quote of the day: "get owens on the field immediatly… swish can take quintens role…"

by Toonderstrook on May 31, 2008 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

alright, i did it anyway, and it would make this draft extraordinary.

the lowest the first pitcher was ever taken in the mlb first-year amateur draft was #6 in ‘05. three other times since 1965 the first pitcher was taken at #4. in the other ~40 drafts, a pitcher was always selected with one of the top three picks.

accordingly, at least one pitcher has been drafted in the top 10 of every draft. never has only one pitcher been selected in the top 10. two of the top ten selections have been pitchers 5 times, with the most recent being 1980 (the others are 1979, 1978, 1973, and 1968). so, again, in the other ~ 40 drafts, at least three pitchers have been among the top ten choices.

Good work, Wiz and Larry

In a sense we got lucky—not only did Hosmer go in the top seven but Alonso went as well. It sucks that Smoak went so early but Skipworth is a nice consolation.

Quick question about the two top rated pitchers… I had previously thought that Crow had the edge on Matusz, but you guys (as well as the drafter for Washington, apparently) seem to have Matusz ahead of Crow. Any quick reasons as to why? From what I’ve read, Crow seems to have better stuff than Matusz.. Are there (more) injury concerns with Crow? Is it the fact that Matusz is a lefty? A little of both?

M vs C

Matusz has a better K/9, BB/9, and H/9 this season than Crow and San Diego’s strength of schedule is more difficult than Mizzou’s. Crow may have the higher ceiling but he’s not necessarily the safer bet. And Chris O’Leary did recently do a pitching mechanics analysis of Crow and proclaimed he is at high risk of elbow/shoulder injury. But I’ve watched videos of Matusz myself and his mechanics are not much better.

by 3E8 on May 31, 2008 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Crow v. Matusz
Projectablity:

I feel Crow’s best two pitches are better than Matusz’s best two. However, Matusz’s third pitch is better than Crow’s third pitch. Simply put, I think Crow is more dominating but Matusz is a safer bet because he already has 3 workable pitches.

Here is how I view them – Crow has a higher ceiling in that if he develops a changeup or a 3rd pitch we could be talking about his stuff being Prior-esque. Matusz on the other hand is the safest bet in the draft. He is going to be a major league pitcher baring an injury. Also, I think he floor is higher than most players. At the very least he is an innings eater 4th starter for a long time.

Lastly, Crow is advised by Boras. Matusz is not. It is almost a given that Boras will demand a ML deal for Crow (bringing up the Prior comparison). So, if a team (the Rays) feels that Crow is the best talent in the draft, is he better by 3 or 4 million than Matusz and Beckham? Probably not.

Furthermore, Matusz is a LHP, so that is a plus. The more I think about it, the more I think Matusz will be the first pitcher taken.
