Halladay
think he gets his 5th complete game in a row?
at least the Yankees will miss the post-season, too.
Just curious...
Why does Quentin bat 7th?
Oh! Duh! He has to get his solo homer quota in. My B.

Joe Sheehan: Every study that’s ever been done shows that the saw about a guy on first base distracting a pitcher is garbage. Players hit MUCH worse in ABs with a stolen-base attempt than they do otherwise, and the rest of the value in having a guy on first is in the first baseman holding and creating a hole, and that happens with 95% of baserunners. Once again, I say: baseball players are much, much more mentally tough, as a group, than they’re given credit for, You can’t shake a major-league pitcher by taking a big lead

Dan Fox
of BP on a baserunner’s effect on the pitcher
“EqOAR (Equivalent Other Advancement Runs) – This measures the contributions of runners who take advantage of passed balls, wild pitches, and balks. Reasearch has shown that runners have more influence on these events than one might think. Better baserunners cause more balks, as most balks result from an attempt to deceive the runner. Better baserunners also cause more passed balls and wild pitches, in a certain sense, as passed balls and wild pitches are only scored as such if the runner attempts to advance.

So, I'm late to the game...but, is Pablo being given a shot as starting 2B?
Or is Uribe dinged up?
Because if someone is going to be useless offensively at 2B I’d rather it were Ramirez.
I wonder if Richar appreciates the magnitude of his misfortune with not being healthy.
good lord
you mean the guy with the negative Eqa? shoot, i’d forgotten that was even possible.
remember the whole visa thing? they’re all probably going to play until someone manages to hit over, like, mendoza consistently. so probably this will last the whole season.
4/29/08: the ginger ninja strikes again
Right...the visa..forgot
It may be deck chairs on the titanic, but giving at-bats to Ozuna irks. And Ramirez would potentially be owrse offensively, but at least they help him develop into a good player.

i'm not sure ramirez is going to be helped by that
he has looked awful. like historically awful. like i said, i’d forgotten it was mathematically possible to have a negative EqA. the sox can help him develop into a good hitter by playing in AAA. which is where he should have been at the start of the season.
4/29/08: the ginger ninja strikes again
Two weak spots...
Do I even need to point out how much our scrub 2nd basemen cost this club?
Also, while Crede makes some dazzling plays and gets some clutch hits the rest of the time he sure seems to have lots of totally useless at bats (pop ups and lazy fly balls) and makes some very crucial errors (6 already this year).
Hard to win with both of those happening in tandem.

Saw Contreras at the Pan Am games about 8 years ago and what worked then, fastball and forkball both working, is still the thing. It’s the “both working” that’s the hard part.

it’s the way umps are. they don’t overrule one another unless asked. ain’t the NFL.
4/29/08: the ginger ninja strikes again
If the HP umpire gets help on a check swing, then any umpire should get help if an ump is out of position to make a call!
Why not have an umpire up in a booth with replay? That is given the right to overrule plays like that. He’s then given the right to overrule only certain specific plays.
They are afraid games would last even longer
that’s what the last excuse was I heard.
But it seems to me with instant replay you wouldn’t have to convene and would actually save time…

So, if he keeps pithcing like this
Contreras should be tradeable. The Sox can get an A ball reliever and around $10M of salary relief to make up for the fact the park will be empty this year and next.
Also on the plus side today: No HRs!
That’s one step towards winning baseball. If they can keep not hitting homeruns and then also bring up Owens to steal bases, the sky is the limit.
A home plate umpire that does’nt step forward to help out the 2nd base umpire on a play like today. Does not belong on a major league crew!
Nah
That isn’t the reason we lost. This team is slumping bad right now – all the bats at once. I guess I suspected we would be about .500 this year and that is about where we are at. Sox look old right now…real old.
Still not sure why Ozzie keeps Thome in against lefties? I would have liked to see someone else hit for him in the 8th.
Anyways – I hope we can salvage one tomorrow. But, matchup doesn’t look good.

it’s not that any of us are invested in fields that much, it’s just that we have no more 3B prospects in the minors, and with Crede’s issues (his contract, his health) trading Fields would be a mistake unless another 3B was acquired.

Kip Wells... Josh Fogg...?
That trade? That was hardly that big a boner.

uh, do i need to go into the theory behind the value of cheap, backend of the rotation innings eaters again?

No...
But it wasn’t like that trade kept the White Sox from really succeeding the next couple years.

really
one could make a rather good argument that having one or both of those during 2003 instead of stewart, porzio, cotts and wright could have been enough to bridge the four game gap to the twins.

Yep
Also, Kip Wells was a very good pitcher in 2003: 200 innings and 3.28 ERA. Replace the Sox 5th starter with that and you have your answer.
Wells got hurt in 2004 and his subsequent years have caused people to forget how good he was for a 2 year stretch…

Short version:
Wells-Ritchie
Foulke-Koch
Royce Clayton
Signing Erstad
I think most everything else is noise. I flipped out at the garland trade and the Swisher trade, but I’ve seen the error of my ways….

not sure one can call the wells-sirotka trade dumb
considering one at least pitched adequately for a half season while the other never pitched again.

Foulke-Koch
Don’t forget that Cotts came over in this trade too. And without him, there’s probably no World Series in ‘05. I think Kenny should get a pass for that one but the other three are pretty bad.

It would open up a hole at 3B
But if it filled a hole elsewhere I’d be OK with it.
It doesn’t really matter…

5 game loss streak summary.
I’m including the 3 runs in today’s 3rd as unearned.
5 games the earned runs of opposition – 3, 4, 0, 2, 1. ERA – 2.00
Sox “earned runs” – 1, 3, 0, 2, 1. AVG – 1.40.
Sox hits – 7, 9, 2, 6, 4. AVG – 5.60.
Sox BB/HBP – 1, 3, 4, 0, 0. AVG – 1.60.
Sox K – 9, 6, 11, 6, 9. AVG – 8.6.
Pitching and defense.
1.6 BB/HBP to 8.6 K per game is pretty rough
