Players hit MUCH worse in ABs with a stolen-base attempt than they do otherwise, and the rest of the value in having a guy on first is in the first baseman holding and creating a hole, and that happens with 95% of baserunners. Reasearch has shown that runners have more influence on these events than one might think. Better baserunners cause more balks, as most balks result from an attempt to deceive the runner. Better baserunners also cause more passed balls and wild pitches, in a certain sense, as passed balls and wild pitches are only scored as such if the runner attempts to advance.

the other umpire(s) should overrule him. he’s wrong. if another umpire sees a wrong call they shouldn’t keep their mouths shut just because it’s the crew chief who made the call.
