White Sox offense on the upswing?
How about this for an unfortunate headline?
The Twins score 13 tonight on 16 hits. The White Sox have 7 runs in the two games on... wait for it... 16 hits. And Jermaine Dye hits a solo HR in the 9th as I'm posting this, making the comparison slightly less pointed ... Who cares.
This is my recap.

And of course
the Sox string together 4 hits in a row in the 9th to completely remove the comparison

Great game...very entertaining
So, if the Sox did decide to trade Jenks and Vazquez now, I would think they could get some decent stuff. And Crede might even fetch a nominal prospect. Dye, if he waives his NTC, could probably get moved but not for anything useful but salary relief. That would open a spot for Jerry “Instant Offense” Owens at least.
I say let the firesale begin.
Any chance the Rangers trade Teagarden for Poreda, Broadway, and Shelby?

They are not about to trade Jenks.
I wouldnt trade Vazquez as well. This team is strong in starting pitching, and replacing Vaz with anyone doesnt do anything short term or long term.
Our problem is our 3-4-5 are under contract, and are untradeable right now. We waited one year too long for the fire sale.

I'd trade Jenks in a heartbeat
but that’s only because I wish to avoid giving him a long-term contract, which seems likely to be signed if he’s able to post another successful season. I think the likelihood of Jenks being effective for the rest of his arbitration years is much less than that of Javy being effective for the remainder of his contract.

I'd agree
If the goal is to build a team to contend in 2009 or 2010, trading Jenks now is the single best move to do that. I also think Javy is likely to stay good longer—he isn’t losing 2 MPH per year from his fastball. But I do wonder what he could bring a trade. Still, if the Sox want to compete in 09, Javy is probably necessary in the rotation.
Things I would like to see and that might have a small chance of actually happening: the Sox trading Contreras and Crede now. Of course, Fields got hisself hurt, which may throw a wrench into that.

I'm think they would in a heartbeat
They traded Danks for McCarthy’s bad arm and although they got Hamilton, they gave up Volquez who’s doing great for the Reds. No young arms to speak of and they have 3 solid catchers in the organization. The GM (Daniels) is perceived as being a master of bad trades. With ol’ Nolan as the new president, he would need his approval, but I can’t see Ryan passing on any chance to get pitching.
Show mercy. I get to watch the Rangers.

Sorry
I thought both were pretty well documented here in the past so I wasn’t sure. I’m obviously not a baseball scout, but I’ve just read numerous times that Poreda has bad mechanics, that combined with the fact he throws in the mid – high 90’s makes for an injury risk. Then you take into account the fact his secondary pitches are still supposedly pretty mediocre would suggest to me that if he does lose velocity he’d become at best a pretty average pitcher.
Considering the Rangers just took McCarthy who had questionable mechanics and got injured while Danks is flourishing with the White Sox would lead me to think they would have to question any trade for our new best pitching prospect pretty hard.

just to clarify
one guy, who has, for whatever reason, gotten a lot of play amongst posters on sites like this, said poreda had poor mechanics. as i’ve tried to point out ad nauseum ever since it was first referred to on this site, the guy was looking at video from early in poreda’s season when, as any analyst of any worth would have been able to easily discover, his college was tinkering with his delivery. it was an experiment that ended quickly. so, no, it’s not well-documented. it’s just oft repeated. his mechanics are fine. i doubt he carries much more or less injury risk than any other pitching prospect of his age.

but i was talking to one of our dallas-based partners about the rangers and their continual fuck-ups. he didn’t know the answer to this but is there concern about how they develop pitchers in the minors? they’ve had quite a few good pitching prospects who have either not produced or produced upon leaving the organization. obviously there is lots that go into such things that are outside the reasonable control of an organization but any thoughts?

staff has the same feeling, and not just towards Uribe. Offense is what it is, not too good. I see this thing turning around in a couple of years when some of our top prospects make it to the show. Oh, wait a minute.
Buehrle has completely lost it…he is getting pounded this year. We got him locked up though – thank god.

Just a couple of quick points.....
I’m not sure who pointed this out here a few days back (probably a few people), but we can bitch and complain all we want about the top of the order, 2B, etc…..but none of it means anything when you look at Thome, Konerko, Dye, AJ, etc…..if those guys don’t hit, well we see what happens.
Also….without a doubt KW has made some bold moves of late that really look great….but he’s going/maybe already does regret the Buehrle signing, Dye extension, not dumping Konerko in the offseason…..but before I blame KW for this I have a feeling there was pressure from the business side (ticket sales) to hold onto Buehrle, Konerko…..
Bottom line—-we suck now and will probably suck for the next 2-3 years.

KW was stuck with both of those
PK gives the game Paul to JR – hits the HR in the WS… fans would have been PO’d / Buehrle, same thing. I really think KW was ready to pull the trigger but there was a lot of pressure on the bus, especially since Mark cornered them with the discount to stay. (Don’t forget – Oz made the statement to the fans that if Mark struggles in the future….something like that, after the signing)

lets not forget that KW explored
trade options with Dye and MB. Pretty hard, I bet. Probably exploring trading Konerko quietly. The returns just aren’t there.
That doesn’t mean that the alternative should have been to lock up Dye – that wasn’t smart.

Doesn't matter
who the Twins have in their lineup. They have all been (or will be) Sox killers at some point. That goes back several years. Punto is just another example. Torii Hunter, Shannon Stewart, Jacque Jones, Lew Ford, hell, even AJ killed the Sox at various points during their Twins tenure. Every year, no matter the payroll, the Twins find a way to be competitive. It probably has a lot more to do with good managing than the skill level of the folks on the field or in the batter’s box. It’s tough to hate a team like that.

I love how everyone now thinks the Buehrle signing was a mistake
I’m sorry, but a LHP with his track record and at his age (which is young for a FA pitcher) for 4 years at well-below market rate was not a mistake. Granted, he could turn out to be done, so there was some risk. It’s still not a bad signing.
Who else were the Sox going to spend that money on? It’s not anywhere near enough to get an elite FA pitcher. Who would the Sox have inn the rotation instead right now? Broadway? Kyle Lohse? For goodness sake.
