Guillen has enough after loss
After watching his underachieving offense go 2-for-14 in a 4-3 loss at Tampa Bay, manager Ozzie Guillen promised some changes to his White Sox roster.

“Just be ready because I expect movement Tuesday,” Guillen said. “I expect Kenny to do something Tuesday, and if we don’t do anything Tuesday, there are going to be a lot of lineup changes. That’s all I’m going to say about the offense.

“It can be me. It can be (hitting coach) Greg Walker. It can be the players. It could be anybody. I’m sick and tired to watch this thing for a year and a half. I’m not protecting anybody anymore. (Bleep) it.

“If they can’t get it done, Kenny should find someone to get it done. That’s it.”

My guess is that nothing happens again...

just like the last time Ozzie ranted about the offense.

Walker should have been fired a year ago but that never happened.

The only roster move that makes sense to me

would be bringing up fields and DFA Pablo.

by omnipotent grab on Jun 1, 2008 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Fields is injured apparently...

He has not played for Charlotte for a few games. Something with his patella, I believe.

It would make sense to DFA Ozuna and pick up any halfway decent bat—Hatteberg, Ensberg, anyone. Obviously, Fields is the better option but if he is hurt, well, he can’t really help us.

Very interesting, very disappointing,’’ Williams said. ’’It’s never a good idea to throw your boss under the bus, especially when that boss has had his back as much as I have. I guess that lineup will be real interesting to see on Tuesday.

of course there is.

clearly picking up scott hatteberg or some other retread will materially affect the offense and turn it into a juggernaut. the sox boxed themselves in this offseason (and prior to that, of course). we’ve all known this. we dance with the ones we brung, for better or worse.

Fucking Cubs win again...

They can’t lose.

Cubs = 36 – 21
White Sox = 30 – 26

Meanwhile, we get ridiculous pitching but our offense is pathetic. I noticed that Prior is set to undergo season-ending surgery and I thought how the Cubs wish they had drafted Joe Mauer instead, but they have Soto anyways.

mid-90s?
Charlotte starter Jack Egbert earned his first career Triple-A win. Egbert was masterful through 7 innings as he allowed just two Richmond runs off of three hits. Egbert also struck out four Braves hitters, as his fastball was routinely in the mid-90s

Are we seeing the beginning of the end of the Ozzie era? What the hell is wrong with Kenny, he’s not throwing him under the bus. He’s stating the obvious: This team’s offense sucks, and he needs to make changes. If Kenny is going to be offended by that, then he should, and if he fires Ozzie then I am done with this team!

by Los Soxos on Jun 1, 2008 6:12 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah -- fuck Kenny for being rational

seriously… what the hell is KW supposed to do at this point? Like cutting Ozuna and bringing up Fields or signing whoever is going to do a damned thing…

The Sox are who they are. The current group we see are either going to sink together or swim together—that is to say that tiny cosmetic changes aren’t going to mean a damn thing in the long run. Swisher is either going to start hitting or we’re going to find out that he’s Ben Grieve the 2nd. Thome is either going to start hitting or he’s going to decline this season. Ditto Konerko.

I don’t have the way with words that guys like Cheat and colin and others have, but I hope my message is somewhat clear - things like changing up the lineup or sending Walker packing isn’t going to do a damned thing (and this coming from someone who’s been somewhat vocal about Walker getting canned. I still think he should be gone - if only because the offense has been pretty stagnant for close to two years now, and if you can’t fire a hitting coach when the results have been terrible, when can you fire him?—but long-term I still don’t think it will mean a whole helluva lot).

I’m very frustrated about how things went this weekend, but in the back of my mind I can’t help but think that (a) they were one hit away from a series split and maybe two-or-three well-timed hits away from taking three from the Rays; (b) the Rays are pretty fucking good, and; (c) compared to the rest of our division, the Sox are still in a pretty enviable spot.

I won’t let a frustrating weekend of baseball cloud the fact that the prospects for this team are as good as any other team in the AL Central, and seriously, that’s better than a good majority of us expected.

Ah, Keith... Being a voice of reason gets you no where

with this crowd. They could win 99 and the same people would be saying the same things. 9 games at home in May means nothing. A 17-17 road record means nothing. Being in 1st place means nothing. They SUCK.
Personally, I’ll wait until June is done. To me the Cell SHOULD cure some hitting maladies. In fact, home cooking combined with warmer weather removes all excuses.

by Chiburb on Jun 1, 2008 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Being in first place doesn't mean much when...

1.) You are only 4 games over .500 and still look like an average team.
2.) Your offense fails at situational hitting like clockwork.
3.) Your pitching staff is barely giving up anything and you are blowing games that even a mediocre offense would manage to win.

I have been talking about how shitty the offense has been for awhile...

Whether they have been winning or not. Because of the offense (not the pitching which has been excellent), this team is only a mediocre 4 games over .500. That is sad. If this was even a decent offense, they would probably have a 5 game lead over the Twins.

by SSH2005 on Jun 1, 2008 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Your point about waiting for June for our hitters to hit...

Its funny because I much rather have it this way

If some expected the team to mash the ball, they also expected the starting pitching to suck and bullpen to be a little better. We have now all said a million times all the Central team are flawed. RIght now I’ll take our flaws over the other ones. Hitting with runners in scoring position is not the same things as very little hits at all.

Kenny Lofton

by Daniel Berlyn on Jun 1, 2008 6:27 PM CDT reply actions

I never even thought of that option (sending Swisher to AAA)...

but at this point, it might not be a bad idea. Let Kenny start in CF and leadoff with O.C. batting second while Swisher works on his swing and his head at AAA. Then, bring Swisher back and improve the bench greatly with Lofton there and also by DFA’ing Ozuna.

by SSH2005 on Jun 1, 2008 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

charlotte needs the swagger!

im on board for this idea.

When Swisher smiles because he cant catch up to 86 mph fastballs, or because he swung at a curve in the dirt... yeah, that makes me angry.

by e-gus on Jun 1, 2008 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Swisher looks fine to me...

I’ve never seen a guy have so many hard-hit balls turn into outs. That diving catch by Swisher encapsulated Swisher’s season – I thought that was a double for sure.

The guy I’m tired of watching hit weak pop-ups and double play grounders is Paul Konerko, but the Sox are stuck with him.

Hawk and DJ went nuts over that Konerko single early in today’s game. That’s what it’s come down to.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jun 1, 2008 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

It simply can't all be bad luck...

Bad luck doesn’t make a player’s numbers look like Neifi Perez’s. I’m sure that bad luck can make them look worse but not as bad as Swisher’s — .201 / .327 / .307 / .634. If Swisher was at least hitting the occasional homerun to up his SLG, I would buy that… but he isn’t. Is he even on pace for double digit homers this season? That’s ridiculous.

I think Swisher swinging at breaking shit at his shins and also taking two-strike pitches right down the cock of the plate are hurting his numbers.

by SSH2005 on Jun 1, 2008 7:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Proffer an additional explanation.

His line drive rate is good, his p/pa is normal and he isn’t K’ing excessively. What more do you want?

1. We are in 1st place.
2. Ozzie is bringing the fire and the passion.
3. WTGTD only posts when the sox are doing good like SSH.
4. Walker gets canned as he should, OC microwaves his bat and gets hot, Swisher gets his head out of his ass and starts hitting, and finally we make a huge deal at the deadline to propel us into the playoffs.

Left-hander Clayton Richard threw a three-hit shutout for Double-A Birmingham on Saturday.
Richard had a 3.63 ERA in the Carolina League last year, but since that came with mediocre stuff and mediocre periperals, no one thought much of it. Now he’s at 2.64 ERA in the Southern League. Richard doesn’t get many strikeouts with his below average fastball, but his command has gone from average to well above and he doesn’t allow a lot of homers. We’re sure White Sox fans will be thrilled to have another potential Heath Phillips on the way. Jun. 1 – 3:31 am et

why not bat Swisher 2nd? The theory is to instill a “purpose” to the AB, or to get a batter to see more fastballs. It seems that AJ is AJ at any place in the order, but Nick could use the discipline/predictability of the 2 hole.

did the mets make a mistake?

and i don’t mean over the short term, but with the long-term deal? interesting analysis of this so far:

When Santana was supposedly heading to the Red Sox or Yankees, there were whispers that his problems with the long ball would be exacerbated there, due to their parks’ respective leanings towards aiding offense. When he was eventually dealt to the Mets, these whispers were silenced, thanks to the offense-dampening Shea Stadium. However, what we have seen from Santana in 2008 belies the nature of the stadium, as his HR/9 has climbed from 1.4 to 1.5 per nine. Granted, he’s gone from giving up 30 homers per 200 innings to 32 over the same time frame, but the thing that has Mets fans worried is that he was supposed improve, at least superficially, thanks to a league switch and move to a pitcher-friendly haven.

This has not happened for a few reasons. First, Santana has lost additional velocity. He’s dipped another half-a-mile per hour on his fastball, which had already dropped from 93.1 to 91.7 mph. He rarely used his cutter in the past, but it’s been cut out of the equation entirely at this point. The past two seasons have shown Santana using his fastball more so than in the past, despite its status as an inferior pitch relative to what he was capable of before. It’s a bit much to say Santana’s lost it—he’s still one of the top pitchers in the NL thanks to low walk totals and a still-excellent 7.9 K/9—but this is not the Santana the Mets thought they were trading for, the one they signed to pitch for them through 2013. Though it has not hurt them too much in 2008—the Mets have other problems to focus on outside of Santana’s rising homer totals—it’s something that’s going to become bothersome and problematic in the future if their expensive ace can’t figure out a way to pitch his way out of this recent trend.

Sheesh, and I thought the whining over the Sox was bad

I could be wrong, and I don’t have any statistical evidence, but I liken Santana to Pedro Martinez in that it seems to me that he can adjust his pitching to suit the best of his repertoire. If his cutter isn’t going over for strikes, why use it?

At any rate, I think the pitching coach over in Queens is pretty good, which will help if he needs to morph himself, so I don’t think he’ll be pulling down the Mets at any point during that contract, unless he gets hurt.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Sox have the 4th best record in the AL.

Gotta look at that as a glass half full, rather than half empty.

BTW, it woulda been a blowout if Q! was in the lineup.

Gee did I miss anything

Oh yeah I see after the 13 games the Sox suck again and the Twins or Indians will come swooping down to past and blow out the rest of the division.

Perspective is everything. At the beginning of May I would have been pleased for the team to finish 1-2 games above .500. They were 5. The schedule turns favorable over the next 16 games.

Where was Q!?

Surprised he didn’t at least PH for Swish. Is he hurt, or just tired of carrying the team?

I took the "under".

Q hasn't hit left handers

Wasn’t that a left hander on the mound? Q hasn’t hit left handers well. Not this year and not in the past to my knowledge. That could explain his not batting, though maybe giving him yesterday off would have been better.
