Placating Youz Guys

I don't have much to say about yesterday's game.  It was disappointing to get beat by the Rockies' pen again, since, like I said, I don't really think much of it.  But I might think of some other stuff to write in this space and I leave that option open.  In any case, an open thread is probably a decent idea.  Feel free to link dump and I'll get them up on the main post if they're worthwhile. **EDIT** I was too lazy to put up all of Wiz's links, but they all satisfy the worth requirement.

I do want to ask what you would place the Sox playoff odds at.  Larry said 2/3 as a convenient ratio and having had a look at the Tigers' BP team audit (see BP Playoff Odds Update ) and considering Victor Martinez is done for 6-8 weeks, I like our chances.  I'll say over/under 70%.  Let's see some long winded well considered responses.  And I still want to see someone convincingly photoshop a skinny Torpedo Boat.

UPDATE (The Wizard): Is Konerko DL bound?

... As if the final score weren't bad enough, the health of Paul Konerko is worrisome. A trip to the disabled list may be coming after he missed Sunday's game with a strained muscle in his left rib cage. "When you've got the problem with the rib cage, I hope for the best, but I'm not too optimistic about it because I know how the thing can be," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We're going to make a decision [Tuesday] to see what we'll do. "Most of the time [the DL] happens because that's a real sensitive area and one you use the most playing baseball."

Jim Thome missed three weeks with a similar injury last season. Konerko first felt the pain during pregame indoor batting practice. "I've never had anything happen like that," he said. "I don't have any answers. I took a swing and ended the day, and that's that. We'll see where it's at on Tuesday." ...

Thanks, colin

And since I whined about a new thread, I may as well post. Didn’t see any of the games this weekend (something about family and work) but was disappointed in the series loss. The guys seem to be in need of a rest (Thomer’s back, Paule’s ribs/Q’s hands – where is Moises Alou to toughen up the piedras when you need him? – Dye, Crede, etc.). Today is a welcome day off.

If PIT isn’t the cure for what ails us, we’re in trouble. (bally, I KNEW I should’ve left well enough alone on my sig.)

and if we lose the PIT series, I think I’ll officially get concerned. It’s just hard for me to be too disappointed when I, like you, took the under.

it amazes me still.

i have never seen such grousing over a team that had very little expectations of making the playoffs but still sits with a 4.5 game lead less than a month from the all-star break.

ssh feels worse because the other teams in the division are struggling. totally understandable. just wanted to know what other people thought. obviously, the 43-22 team only up 5 games was the 2005 white sox. i am torn, but in the end i think i agree with mm that b is worse because that ‘05 team was playing out of its mind, above pythag, and was still only 5 games up.

and i think there were a few who said that 85ish wins was certainly achievable for the sox, assuming certain things happened.

so far, they have. the expectation for this team has been raised but it probably shouldn’t be (at least not too high). this is not a great team by any means (using 90+ wins as a rough measure of “great/very good”). they are a pretty good team who has taken advantage of some fortuitious circumstances. right now, it looks like pretty good, or 87ish wins, will get it done in this division. still a long time to go and, of course, that’s why they play the games and don’t have a guy living in his step-mom’s basement playing the season on his computer.

Not this part of the fan base

I could give a rat’s patoot as to what the Northerners are doing. Keep your eye on your own job/wife, and don’t covet you neighbor’s (right, SSH?). Heightened expectations fanned by over-the-top performance by the Sox (Tdogg/bhoov excepted) and woeful underperformance by our competitors leads to disappointment. I don’t mind when I know we are going to suck, and we do. I mind when I KNOW we are going to suck, and we don’t, and then I buy into it.

And THEN I get smacked in the teeth. THAT’S what I have experienced (except for 2005) just about my whole life. Which is why it’s better to set low expectations. KW’s moves have worked out very well, and it has been pleasantly surprising.

So follow through, GD it. Close!

honestly, though

and i realize i’ve been all for this one, but i’m not sure why these two moves would be connected, unless paulie is out for a long time. lofton hasn’t played baseball since october. even assuming he’s in shape right now, i don’t see how he can go right on the major league roster. the most aggressive timeline would be, what ten days down in charlotte? even that seems too quick.

at any rate, what i guess i’m getting at is that i wouldn’t call this a “sudden” move predicated by PK’s injury. it would pretty much have to be related to an assessment of someone else, whether that be BA, uribe, ozuna, so on.

obvious caveats w/r/t rumor.

Lofton

• Still aloft: We hear the White Sox recently made the most serious run yet at signing Kenny Lofton. But Lofton is still looking for a deal in the $2.5-to-$3-million neighborhood, which wasn’t what the White Sox had in mind. We take this as not just an indication of Lofton’s mind-set, but an indication of the White Sox’s shopping plans between now and the deadline. Barring injury, they figure to be mostly in the market for a left-handed-hitting complementary part—ideally one who can motor a little.

A TC column?
It’s time to start the “tip your cap” count, as Ozzie opted for the ol’ cliché after Saturday’s loss to Jorge De La Rosa, who came in with an ERA over 8 but left after five shutout innings of 1-hit ball.

Maybe there should be a column for cap tips (TC) next to wins (W), losses (L) and games back (GB) in the newspaper’s standings. The White Sox enter play tonight 38-31 with 12 cap tips, 4.5 games atop the AL Central.

I don’t want to hear anyone associated with the Sox, anyone who has ever worn a Sox hat or t-shirt, use the patented “tip your cap” line ever again.

All-Star voting update
Write in Quentin for ‘08 All-Star Game

Outfielder needs your support to go the Midsummer Classic

A get-out-the-All-Star-vote campaign for Carlos Quentin, put on by the White Sox in the time-honored tradition of Chicago political campaigns, should be considered a qualified success.

On one front, the White Sox left fielder has more write-in support than any other player not listed on the official American League ballot, according to the latest round of on-line voting results released on Monday. Clearly, Quentin’s strong candidacy has been thrown in front of the fans on a consistent basis.

But that strong showing of support still has not been good enough to put Quentin in the top 15 among outfielders. ...

An examination Monday showed Wang partially tore a tendon and sprained his foot. He will be on crutches and wear a protective boot for the next six weeks.

sure, lots of things could happen

and gaining those 3 back could also happen in short order. barring a total collapse, the indians aren’t going to trade cc. we’re talking 10+ out with major injury concerns. this division is there for the taking. if they could make up 10+ games against the sox in 05, they can do the same this year. shapiro isn’t a dummy. if they’re going to let him go, those two picks are arguably better than what they’d get in trade at this point and they’d get to keep cc for a shot at the playoffs. total collapse would need to happen and the indians don’t particularly look like they’re going to collapse.

You casually throw out

They have the money to do it. They do and they don’t. Signing CC would take pretty much all of their budgeted money (and they do want to upgrade their offense. They feel like their depth in starting pitching allows them to take the hit. Mark S has pretty much said they won’t be commiting those type of dollars for 6 years (so CC would have to concede that to stay). CC likes Cleveland but has said he would welcome the challenge of a big stage (city). Bloggers like Jay who certainly follow the Indians intently seems to believe the same.

and nothing i “throw out” is casual. rhetoric is rhetoric. i recall this time last year when another left-hander wasn’t going to concede this and another al central team wasn’t going to do that. if it gets to september and they haven’t extended him, i’ll probably swing the pendulum towards him being let go.

The reference to ballpark budget was pretty close to what Shapiro

said an interview on XM after signing Carmona to his extension and being questioned on CC. He didnt rule it out but he pointed to Santana’s contract and the difficult decision it would be in committing maybe a 1/4 of the payroll to 1 player. Didnt mention actually numbers. He put a lot back on CC and would he be willing to concede somethings. A successful season would probably enhance the chances and coffer.

by Tdogg on Jun 16, 2008 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

true

and i think they’re going to spend it. the point, which you and i have both made, is whether they’ll spend some of it on cc. i personally think that question turns on things outside, so to speak, those directly related to cc. like whether they can improve themselves offensively via the trade route (the rumors regarding the pirates have been out there and probably carry more weight at this point than the cc to the yankees rumors). and who will be available in free agency. if guys like dunn and texeira are traded to teams that extend them (or are otherwise extended), the main offensive upgrades on the FA market are gone. you then have to wonder if trading some of your young pitching for offense (or something similar to that route) and re-signing cc isn’t a smarter course of action than letting him go.

i don’t by any means think it’s a slam dunk. 60/40 maybe with a whole lot of moving parts.

Larry and Colin must be doing some extreme drugs to say 2/3 and 70%.

Konerko down, probably no big deal in the short term. Thome not improving much. Crede very hot and cold. Contreras hasn’t looked great lately. Oh, and let’s not forget the slump Q! is in. Maybe he’ll struggle mightily in his 1st post- “big time success” slump, maybe not.

Yeah I guess I am then.

I would gather close to 2/3 of the teams up 4.5 games thru 93 games win the division or make the playoffs. The wildcard number being so low is only a function of the division playing so bad. If the Sox and say the Indians or Tigers were battling at the end for 88-89 wins their WC percentage would be pretty high. Hell 88-89 wins might win the Wildcard this year with the toughness of the East.

For just the last 6 years listed on ESPN. 11 teams have led a division by 3.5 games on this date.

10 made the playoffs.

The thing that jumps out at you

And probably is the same moving further in history, is its not likely a team leads by 4 games or more by this date.

i used 4.5+ game leads or more...

and got 9 for 11 since ‘02.

in addition, since and including the 2002 season, 2/3 (24 of 36) of teams leading the standings on june 16 have gone on to win their division, irrespective of division lead at the time.

i'm guessing that...

...you don’t get to see nearly as many cleveland, detroit, minnesota, or kansas city games as you do white sox game (i hardly get to watch many white sox games, let amoneal central teams at all post-move). if that’s true, you see the occasional sox suckitude and worry. it’s natural. but at the same time, you’re missing out on seeing all of the other al central suckitude when they aren’t playing the sox, too.

Half Dome is my bitch. Shasta is next.

by Toonderstrook on Jun 16, 2008 5:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Another good point.

I have probably watched more Indian, Tiger and Twins games than ever before. When the Sox got off to a good start I instantly and stupidly began to scoreboard watch and follow the competition. That was my main beef a couple of weeks ago and earlier this year. Watching the faults of other teams on a daily basis and comparing them to the Sox’s flaws provided me with a little more comfort.

dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

by colintj on Jun 16, 2008 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

this all started with the playoff likelihood issue.

in that case, you don’t judge the white sox relative only to other al central teams, especially not less than half the season in. i’m sure to win a division you typically have to perform well against your division opponents based on the sheer number of times you play them, but again, after 70 games, i don’t think it’s enough. i suppose you’re basing the tigers are coming on the fact that the sox are only 5-4 against them?

since ‘04, only two of the twelve american league teams have won a division did so with a losing record against any division within their own league.

both teams did so in '05 and met in the alcs. the won with the worse performance against a rival division won the world series. if we use the small sample size, sox currently 7-12 against the east (no red sox yet) and 6-6 against the west (no rangers yet). maybe lightning will strike again.

For that kind of disagreement, I would have liked to see more reasoning.

You essentially said “things are up in the air” and then pasted a number on there. History and prediction models put it higher. Hell, THT pegged us for 93 wins and the next best in the Central won 78(?). But really, check our record in the Central. We’ve demonstrated that we’re the best in head to head matchups so far. Halfway through the season, that means something significant.

Sounds familiar
After seeing the White Sox get swept by a division rival that happens to be a better team, I think the Sox are done for this year. I don’t care what the standings say. It’s early and we don’t get to play the Royals, Twins and Giants all year. The Sox simply lack talent, and what little of it they have is just waiting to get hurt. Time for a sell-off, even though few of our players are worth anything. —Jeff Kay, Chicago

Nady has MRI on injured left shoulder
Xavier Nady had an MRI exam on his left shoulder at Allegheny General Hospital on Monday, with the results revealing a Grade 1 acromioclavicular joint sprain. Encouragingly, however, the procedure showed no damage done to his rotator cuff or labrum.

Consequently, the Pirates have determined not to put Nady on the disabled list. The Pittsburgh right fielder will join the club in Chicago on Tuesday for the team’s three-game set against the White Sox.

The club is expected to then decide within the next two to three days what it plans to do next.

then took a curve right there for strike 2. Change in the dirt pushed the count full and then Inman threw fastballs on which Beckham was late until he finally flied out to right.

considering charlotte is awful with keeping their roster up to date. carrasco has been pitching for a couple weeks now and yet is still listed on the DL. liefer has been retired for over three weeks and is still on the active roster.

don't know if anyone pointed this out above

but I’m not really worried about making the playoffs this year. I think that we have a good enough team to win our division. What worries me about our team is that our old guys (thome konerko and uribe in particular) are going to keep us from competing for a championship. We need more speed and on base percentage players to compliment our pitching.

kenny didn’t put this team together to try and just get to the playoffs after all.
