Rodney, Zumaya back?
Rodney, Zumaya set to bolster bullpen

Fernando Rodney has joined the Detroit Tigers roster, while Joel Zumaya is slated to return on Friday, the Detroit Free Press reports.

To make room for Rodney, the Tigers optioned Aquilino Lopez to Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. The Tigers will have to demote another player when Zumaya joins the team.

Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson in trouble?
Earlier tonight, Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectusreported that Rick Peterson had been fired by the Mets.

However, in an update a few minutes later, he wrote that his sources were ‘incorrect,’ adding…

"My apologies for the error. I consistently got "no comments" from Mets sources and do believe that Peterson remains in jeopardy. However, that decision has not yet been made … or made public."

…will has solid sources, and is ahead of the curve on a lot of inside information, so, i wouldn’t dismiss what he was getting at…in other words, my hunch is that peterson is in super-serious trouble at this point…we’ll see…

…either way, it’s official, i’m going off the rails on a crazy train…

Suggests a couple things

They don’t think PK’s injury is all that serious b/c Wise is the definition of a short-term replacement.

They have some faith in BA to continue getting the job done as they didn’t give Owens a chance to take his spot.

by Grinder in Training on Jun 17, 2008 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the Jerry Owens experiment is over.

He’s no longer young, and he hasn’t done anything this year in the minors to show that he belongs on a major-league roster.

For the 24th or 25th man...

I don’t really care. It’s not like Wise (or whoever) is going to see a lot of action before Konerko gets back.

What this means is more playing time for Uribe and/or Anderson.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jun 17, 2008 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

My reasoning is thus

Owens could be a useful pinch-runner in the approximately 2 situations that such action is called for over the next 2 weeks.

Also, I am curious to see Cook play.

I am not curious to Wise play.

I agree all this is akin to arguing if it’s better to be in debt by a million dollars or a million-and-one dollars.

But unless option d has an actual name, this is all we have to discuss….

if you're curious to see cook play

I think...

True, but Owens is faster...

I have to admit. Of course, I would rather have the better hitter on the bench—which is probably Wise, even though they both suck.

Speed is not the only element to stealing bases. It’s probably not even the most important element.

by The Jerry Royster Experience on Jun 17, 2008 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

it's not.

it’s about reading a pitcher/getting a good jump. which owens was horrible at and his SB rates down in charlotte suggest hasn’t gotten much better.

he's never been a particularly good basestealer

he’s clearly relied primarily on his speed. the decline in his numbers at AAA this year suggests that, not suprisingly, he’s perhaps lost a half step (or whatever fraction you want to use) because of his leg injury. if jerry doesn’t have that speed/explosiveness, he’s pretty much worthless. i said before the season began that i seriously questioned whether he would be able to get back to the level he was at after this injury. he did not play when i watched charlotte this year so i don’t have any first-hand knowledge but the numbers aren’t looking good for him.

How many players can be on each minor league roster?
There are two separate lists of players for minor league teams: the “active list”, and the “reserve list”. Players may be transferred between these lists before the start of each game, but only players who are on the “active list” at the start of the game can play in a particular game. The “reserve list” includes all players on the “active list”.
AAA and AA teams are allowed 24 players on their “active list” for the first 30 games. They are allowed 23 players on their active list after that until August 10th, when they are allowed to have 24 players. The “reserve list” limit is 38 players for AAA teams and 37 players for AA teams.
A teams have a limit of 25 players on their “active list”.

i should note that the knights roster status isn’t exactly the most up to date thing.

Indians signed INF Morgan Ensberg to a Minor League contract and assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo.
As we said when he was released by the Yankees a week ago, the 33-year-old has hit just .225/.308/.371 in 143 games dating back to last season.

Mets Fire Randolph
Despite winning 3 of his last 4 and showing signs of turning things around, Willie Randolph was fired today by the New York Mets. Wow…unreal.

The Mets named Jerry Manuel interim manager, replacing Randolph. Manuel, in his fourth season with the Mets, had been bench coach since 2006. The Mets also named Ken Oberkfell, Luis Aguayo and Dan Warthen to the coaching staff. Rick Peterson and Tom Nieto have been relieved of their coaching duties.

tonight's game

Matchup: Pirates (34-36) at White Sox (38-31), 7:11 p.m. CT
Probable Starters: Ian Snell (77 2/3, 5.79 RA, 1.78 WHIP, 62 K) vs. Javier Vazquez (90 IP, 4.00, 1.32, 90)
Pythagorean Record: Pittsburgh, 33-37 (343 RS, 366 RA); Chicago, 41-28 (319 RS, 259 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Pittsburgh, #24; Chicago, #4
Prospectus: For those surprised that the Pirates’ run differential and record Nate McLouth’s performance as an answer to how it’s happened. McLouth is outperforming his 90th percentile PECOTA forecast, thanks in no small part to his .270 ISO. More intriguing than his performance during the first three months of the season is how he got to that point, as there may be a new performance level established within his numbers. McLouth historically is a low average hitter thanks striking out over 22 percent of the time in ‘06 and 23.4 percent of the time in ‘07. Last year saw McLouth add value to his batting line despite this thanks to walking in 10.6 percent of his plate appearances, a significant boost on the 6.3 he posted the year prior.

McLouth has taken that success with patience this year and combined it with excellent control of the strike zone, cutting his strikeout rate from 23.4 percent all the way down to 13.7 percent. This makes him less reliant on a lofty BABIP in order to post decent batting average numbers—his average is up 38 points despite a BABIP three points under last season’s figure—and this improvement in his eye has also shown up in is contact rates, via Fangraphs. McLouth is making contact with nearly 10 percent more pitches out of the zone that he swings at than last season, and is making contact on 89 percent of his swings overall. If this change is for real, and the indicators surrounding him show that it could be, then McLouth has improved from quality leadoff hitter to one of the top center fielders in the game, something the Pirates need to have happen to them more often as they rebuild from the previous administration.
