Wise faster than PK says Ozzie
“Well, I’ll tell you, [Wise] will be faster than Konerko,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “He can run backward and he’ll be faster than Paulie. But, you know, we need that. That’s the reason [general manager] Kenny Williams brought him up. He talked to the minor-league manager (Bombard) and Buddy Bell, and they said the guy can help you right now up there.”

With Nick Swisher moving to first base, the center field spot will be a platoon between the left-handed hitting Wise and Brian Anderson.

“I’m not afraid to play Brian against righties,” Guillen said. “If [Wise] is swinging the bat well, he’s going to stay in the lineup, and we’ll see what it can bring to the table.”

want a lucky baseball glove (that has its hex removed by a live rooster)?
The Birmingham Barons announced Tuesday that they will be hosting theme tribute nights to both “Bull Durham” and “Star WarsTM” during the six-game homestand with the Jacksonville Suns that begins Tuesday night. The movie “Bull Durham”, one of the most popular baseball movies of all time, was released on June 15, 1988. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Barons will feature a “Bull Durham Night” this Thursday, June 19. Clips from the movie will be played throughout the game, and the in-game contests will have a decidedly “Bull Durham” feel. Prizes could include candlesticks (because everyone knows that candlesticks make a lovely gift), shower shoes (without fungus, just like they are in “the show”), and lucky baseball gloves (that have had their hex removed by a live rooster).

We'd provide it....

Seriously though it might make some sense…...I am pretty sure I’ve read the Brewers-Fielder have not had a whole lot of success in trying to get together on a contract to buy out some free agency years….

We have an upcoming need for a left-handed power hitter….eventually with Thome and Crede (after 08) and then Dye (after 09) and eventually PK (after 10) off the books, we can pay him.

I definitely think we’d have to give more than Jenks….but I’d be interested.

.345 BABIP, 17% LD rate, ~.100 ISO and he's platooning?

it’s the best possible situation and that’s what he’s done? as soon as his BA dips 10 points he ceases to have value. I don’t think he’s even playing center.

dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

He's a kid.

Still a lot of time to learn.

Pitching, defense, health.

He doesn't have to learn, he's got to hit for power

And most don’t think he’s going to.

Can't speak to the others but

for the most part he isn’t platooning and he’s played most of the time in CF, 41 games.

Pitching, defense, health.

he's not platooning but he has only 22 PAs against lefties?

sweeney...

the a’s have played 70 games.
sweeney’s injury prevented him from playing in 13.
of the potential 57 games in which he could have appeared, he played in 50 and started in 40.
of the 17 games in which he either didn’t play at all or entered the game as a replacement (never earlier than the sixth), all 17 featured opposing left-handed starters.

so that's what happens when you do research.

finishing touch.

of the 40 games sweeney has started, 3 have been against opposing lefty starting pitchers.
so of the 20 games in which the a’s faced a lefty when sweeney was available, he started in 15% of them.

Half Dome is my bitch. Shasta is next.

so the conclusion seems to be that, for the most part, he is platooning.

good for him. he’s found a team that values (and, thusly, knows how to use) players like him. he’s a nice complemtary piece. i’d rather have him than, say, BA or owens but thems the deals.

Sorry, only looked back to mid-May.

He’s started every game since May 21.

We’ll see about him., still only 23.

Pitching, defense, health.

by ballyb on Jun 18, 2008 1:58 PM CDT up reply actions

23 and a former 2nd rounder

was the whole reason the A’s wanted him in the deal. you take the upside even if the chances are small because he wasn’t the centerpiece. it could bite us in the ass, but no one seems/seemed to think it will.

he's platooning.

though if he can play a credible CF, he’s not the worst option for half a CF platoon. the A’s are using him like I suggested we could this year. he’s doing what i thought he could do and no more.

Ryan Sweeney, OF, Oakland Athletics
2008: .307/.367/.421 | 140 AB | 2 HR | 23 RBI

It is obvious (and had been for at least a year) that Ryan Sweeney needed a change in scenery. He received that change with a winter trade from the White Sox to the Athletics. Sweeney, 23, has not hit for a ton of power but he has played good defence and has gotten on base with an on-base percentage at .367. He has also shown good versatility by playing all three outfield positions. He likely will never hit for the power the White Sox expected after taking him in the second round out of high school.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

sounds Canuckish to me. Just didn’t want to agree with Toonder, since I am in the midst of madness and he is the voice of reason. I read Nietzsche and Heine this morning and have my Teutonic on.
