Can we get that physicist from LOST?
Do some crazy time experiments so the Sox are constantly thinking they are hitting against Ian Snell.
I call it the 'Uribe offense'
Hot and cold, but mostly cold.
Although I seem to remember the offense scoring a lot the 1st two weeks of the season, maybe that should be a separate time period.
Both feet on the bandwagon.
all i know
is me and my brother drank 16 shots of jaegermiester in hte bullpen bar, and eventually the sox caught up.
(combined, not indiviidually)
6 pregame, 4 when the first fireworks went off, 4 in the 5thish, 2 in hte top of 7, bang.
so the AAAA journeyman starts over Anderson, yet B.A. is his defensive replacement/pinch hitter later?
why not start B.A.?
did Wise’s old man play pigskin with Kenny Sr. or what?

Is Jerry Owens
officially banned from the 40 man roster? This is the 2nd time Wise has been called up. Are they boycotting Owens to ensure a Roster controversy doesn’t begin? I’m not saying I’m a proponent of him, but at least give the guy a chance over Wise.
because he showed last year,
when he sported a fine .636 OPS (67 OPS+) as a 26-year old that he can really handle big league pitching.

I Am More Perplexed Than Distraught
And yes I meant 25. I just feel like he isn’t being given a chance, although I wouldn’t say I’m “missing” him. I think he could be playing just AS GOOD if not a little BETTER than B.A. has performed so far this season.
look at his numbers in AAA
and your confusion should end.

#'s In AAA Is What We Go By Now?
If that’s the case, look @ Wise’s steady decline from an AVG. of .340+ to down to .319?
wasn't he still ops-ing something in the upper .900s in charlotte?
what about jo?

tell me what you go by in assessing whether someone should be called up.
your faith that owens can play baseball well right now? he’s doing a poor job of stealing bases. he’s not hitting. he’s not getting on base. outside of blind optimism, why should the white sox expect a better performance at a higher level?
wise, despite that oh so horrible slide you refer to, was still outperforming your boy for the month of june – and with jerry having a ridiculously unstastainable BABIP propping up his numbers.
"The Cubs would've won that game. They're the bestest team ever." - SSH2005
I'd Go By
If Wise instills confidence that he can play at or better than B.A.’s level. I honestly believe Jerry Owens CAN play better than B.A. has to this point. I also think SB’s and CS’s are a crapshoot and there’s no real way to assess that just by looking at the #’s.
Not even getting a chance is what’s bothering me. Wise didn’t have a hit until last night when it seemed everyone was getting a hit except for Q. I just don’t understand his 2nd chance at it when Owens didn’t even get a 1st chance.
i'm confused
the guy called up to be a stopgap should be better than the guy who has been on the roster all season?
it’s nice that you have confidence in jerry. since the white sox have way more information than you or i – and you apparently don’t think numbers tell the whole story (with which i certainly agree) – it might be a time to defer to them.
"The Cubs would've won that game. They're the bestest team ever." - SSH2005
We'll Never Know
Because as stated in the beginning, J.O. is banned from the TWENTY-FIVE man roster of ‘08.
Okay this is getting silly
Never know what? BA is a 4th Of on this team and his defensive abilities make him more valuable than Owens ability to steal a base. Owens has zero power. I think he’s a great guy but the team is fine without him….

Against Lefthanded pitching
the White Sox are futile; the Pirate announcers (Sox feed was not available through DirectTV last night) were talking with tonight’s starter Tom Gorzelanny (who grew up on the South Side and was a Sox fan) last night; Crede is 5 for 50 against LHP; all of Dye’s homers are against RHP; only Thome, oddly enough, is hitting LHP well. So, even though Gorzelanny sports a 6.65 ERA, I fear that Buerhle is in danger of what Jayson Stark calls another CUS (criminally unsupported start).
Any thoughts on why the Sox can’t hit LHP?
in a change of direction

First of all, the guy often bunts for extra bases. And it only takes him two, maybe three strides to move 90 feet, which will help keep AJ out of double play situations.

Right
Because when runners are on base, they swing for the fences and make more outs and score less runs. Or if they hit a double or single instead of denting the bleachers they would have better, longer rallies….

Well, that's not what he's saying.
I get it – it’s frustrating when there’s a runner on second and two outs, and the inning ends on a medium-deep fly ball because the batter is trying to hit it out of the park rather than just get any old hit.
But that’s the team that Ken Williams has assembled – Greg Walker or anyone else can’t do anything about that.

well, i sort of have a problem with assessing a contract 2.5 months into it when it's for four seasons.
as i’ve said before, the money may well be worth it if the sox win a championship this year (or he contributes to some combination of playoff appearances or winning seasons), even if he dies halfway through the contract.

Chris (Chicago): Will, nobody talks about White Sox Pitching Coach Don Cooper, but he has done a great job the past few years getting value out of certain guys. Where does he rate as a pitching coach?
Will Carroll: He’s had a couple good years, a couple bad years, so I don’t think we have a real handle on him. We don’t have a good handle on coaching. Mazzone and Peterson were by acclimation the two best pitching coaches in the game, but today they’re both unemployed. Simply put, we have almost no idea what effect coaches have. If I can rephrase your question for you and you asked “Would Don Cooper be on a list of pitching coaches you’d interview if you were hiring?” the answer would be yes. Not at the top, but on the list.

dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
Someone probably already noted this in an earlier thread,
but over their current 2-5 run, the Sox have now actually outscored the opposition 30-29. Somewhat amusingly, one of the 2 wins is a 1-run win (over COL on the 13th).
I assume this is because everyone is fat.

So the Mariners fire sale has started?
I wonder if they are shopping Ichiro at all. He would look good leading off for the Sox.
Even if they would
What do the white sox have that would get them a guy like Ichiro? Fields, Poreda, Egbert is about all we got at the minor league level. Guess they can throw in a guy like Boone Logan from the majors, but still, we don’t have an Adam Jones sitting around.
by Grinder in Training on Jun 18, 2008 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions
No place for Ichiro.
We have DeWayne in CF and a hispanic, bat handler leading off.
Pitching, defense, health.
Im not so sure
that Ichiro would command a huge bounty considering his age and apparent OPS decline that has them moving him to LF to hopefully spark his bat. He would definately demand quality players, but I dont think top tier prospects are a must.
if we're considering his age and his apparent OPS decline
why exactly would a team want to take on the remaining $80M or so on his deal?
"The Cubs would've won that game. They're the bestest team ever." - SSH2005
Didn't know about the OPS decline
He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy whose numbers would dip just b/c the team is awful, so it’s probably legitimate. KW said money wasn’t a factor, and with Thome coming off the books the Sox have the cash if that was a problem. If Suzuki can’t play center though it’s pretty pointless.

Surprise not much mentioned on this about Hafner.

or we could call on occam's razor
and use the easy answer of unathletic sluggers don’t age well and experience quick declines after age 30? but that wouldn’t have that level of scandal some seem to enjoy.
"The Cubs would've won that game. They're the bestest team ever." - SSH2005
hmm
Well, he didn’t get a full-time gig until he was 27, then he was a monster for 3-years and then fell down to mediocraty again. He is built like a linebacker…so not sure where you are getting unathletic from?
Difference between Paulie and Hafner is Paulie is a year older but has played in the majors for 5 years longer…he had more talent at a younger age.

by BobbySouthSide on Jun 18, 2008 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions
you're citing the classic age 27ish peak of a player
the indians simply made the mistake of not seeing him for what he was and handing him a really fucking dumb extension.
i’m using unathletic in the baseball sense (i.e., his tool is mash ball, run slowly around bases, and avoid the field at all costs). obviously he’s “athletic” if he’s playing major league ball.
"The Cubs would've won that game. They're the bestest team ever." - SSH2005
True
..not sure anyone saw his body failing him like it has – but you are right, dump extension. Same could be said about Paulie’s extension in 2005.

at least konerko's extension
immediately followed a big season, including a postseason in which he owned the angels in the playoffs on the way the sox won a world series. and konerko’s deal had a LOT to do with perception by the fans of letting the face of the championship team walk.

Hafner is a bad body
and Paulie was a catcher and 3B coming up.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.
You don't have to be all that athletic...
to play third base, and Konerko hasn’t donned the tools of ignorance since he was a teenager.
But yeah, as slow and unathletic as Konerko is, he does get around better than Hafner.

I believe that is the first postitive nod to Paulie
you’ve made, JRE. He doesn’t suck as much as Pronk. It’s a start.
Now, how do you feel about Orlando Hudson? Or Orlando Florida? Or Ernie Hudson?
Anything to get away from the bickering. Jeez, we won last night…

The Hafner signing...
was worse than the Konerko signing, yes.
If I’m going to give an eight-figure contract to a first base/DH type, he’d better be a future Hall-of-Famer. Otherwise, I’m going bargain shopping.

just someone who early in his career had the aptitude for more than DH, something Hafner does not.

To recap:
1. Sox need to DFA Herm Schneider because he is on ‘roids and doesn’t hit enough 2-out singles with men on second, all of whom would be unable to score anyway because they are too fat.
2. Coop once had a bad year, but no one remembers because they had too much jaegermiester in the bullpen bar last night with Hugo Chavez’s brother.
3. Travis Hafner is bad because he is too fat, as is everyone else except Konerko, who we should therefore trade for Ichiro, or possibly Orlando Hudson (one or both of whom may also be too fat, but they were former catchers or 3rd basemen, so they must be thin enough to score from 2nd on a hypothetical team which has hitters who do not always try to hit home runs).
4. Jerry Owens has been banned from the 25 man roster because he plays too many games in below average home run parks. Also, he cannot drink enough jagermeister.
5. Everything else is Juan Uribe’s fault.
That about cover it?

I think they all badly overstate the likelihood of a decent acquisition for 3 months of CC
Rasmus was being thrown out there. C’mon. I think they could probably convince Ned Colletti that he doesn’t need LaRoche, but outside of that, there aren’t a lot of corner bats available to them.
