What's Wrong With Mark Buehrle?
Remember when Mark Buehrle was a fat cat who couldn't pitch since he signed his new contract? Clearly a weight was lifted off of Mark's shoulders following the equally inconsequential West Virginia democratic primary. Observe.

looks like luck
his K rate actually got worse, but it looks like balls were finding the field instead of gloves early on.
Expect more abreviated post-game posts from me
I’m both not in the mood to discuss the Sox and have less time to devote to them as well.

supposedly I'll be getting a comp soon, so MLB.tv and recaps will be doable
I was at this game from the 5th on fwiw
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

What does this…
I’m confused.

Looks like the pirates to me
His luck was always gonna work out in the long run, I’m happier to see the offense explode again.
Hopefully
this time it is prolonged offensive thrashing of their opponents. I believe we will run away with it once Detroit’s replacement starters start getting roughed up.

Not only do they have "crushes" on men.
They also love transvestites…

yeah ok...
well while we’re at it let’s just DFA vazquez, danks, floyd, and contreras…cuz if buehrle blows i would think they all blow…and then we can DFA captain q, crede, cabrera and alexei too…hell why don’t we just DFA the whole 25 man roster (except for pablo ozuna because he’s young and good..SSH will like that one) and bring up the Birmingham Barons to play for us…maybe they won’t blow…haha what is it with these clueless sox fans on this board
i'm just as worried about the ones who haven't looked into purchasing the sarcasm detector yet.

Finesse
Buehrle is a finesse pitcher. His “fast” ball must be set up by his breaking pitches and changeup. If his control is good, he will have a great game. It seems that his control has improved significantly. Another note: earlier this season, he was snakebit by poor defensive plays. It seemed that whenever the Sox did not turn a routine DP, the other team scored three runs.
"Baseball is 90% mental -- the other half is physical."
Although Buerhle did start the season roughly,
I haven’t been disappointed in his last few outings.
Yes, his inability to work out of defensive errors is a problem. But in 2-1 or 1-0 losses, we can’t really blame Buerhle or the defense. As someone mentioned in last night’s gamethread, he has also been plain unlucky.
So I definitely haven’t given up on him. He’s still our ace and I’ve seen him do a lot worse!
i wouldn't call him our ace, just because if we had to win one game he wouldn't be the guy i wanted on the bump.
They're gonna give daddy the Rain Man suite, you dig that?
If not him, who?
Javy? Eek. Count? Oy. Floyd/Danks? Phuleeze.
MB’s still the go-to guy. Really.
CWS: Slashing negative expectations since May, 2008.
yeah,
aside from Contreras in ‘05 (second-half Contreras moreso, of course) and Loaiza in ‘03, I wouldn’t give the ‘ace’ assignment to any other pitcher as long as Buerhle’s been on our mound. I suppose Garland also stepped up one year….but still….Buerhle is the man. I dig his pace and would put him on the bump if we had to win just one…

Buerhle's pace
NONE better. Great way to get an extra hour of drinking in after the game!
"Baseball is 90% mental -- the other half is physical."
actually, yeah. i would rather have javy or danks go out on the mound right now to win a ballgame.

Really?
As up and down as Javy is? (And recently, he is the mirror image of MB – meaning he’s been really lucky.) Danks is slightly less proven than Mark, no?
I hear what you are saying, but I respectfully disagree. MB’s the one I want in a big game. I can live with him getting a loss. I’d hate to have him available while Javy/Danksy are tossing their cookies behind the mound.
CWS: Slashing negative expectations since May, 2008.
our offense has been largely hit-or-miss this season. i think javy and danks are both guys who can regularly shut out a team for 5-6-7 innings. i would just feel more confident if they were on the mound on a day the offense is struggling.

I'll take the consistent QS
and let the hitting chips fall where they may.
Aren’t you trading today? Go make some money! It’s true – women weaken the legs. Since you got some your days seem much freer.

market's been slow. i'm still at the office, but i've just been goofing around all day. watching the sox game.
They're gonna give daddy the Rain Man suite, you dig that?
in the long run
mark buehrle will probably end up being the most consistent pitcher we have…he’s almost a lock to go 7+ everytime and if his cutter is sharp like it has been the past three outings the sox have a great chance to win
toby hall quote
“Sometimes it just takes a little longer and maybe he wasn’t ready right out of the gate,” added Hall of Buehrle. “I’ll take that anytime now, a couple of mulligans to get him back where he needs to be. He’s doing great.”
Is it possible that the effects of the Sox taking all those precautions with Mark in spring training (missing starts, decreasing workload) resulted in a poorer start out of the gate? Maybe he just wasn’t as ready as he should have been.
Regardless, if it means he is pitching lights out in September, I’ll take it. Especially considering the team has remained in first to this point
coop was pissed for a reason
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
scoper
you bring up a good point which in all reality makes sense…we all know that he has thrown over 200 IP the past seven seasons….perhaps he did need all the extra work that he usually did and his first few starts may have been some of his final tuneups before being at full strength
but with the way he’s looked the past few starts…i’ll take that the rest of the year…it’s the mark buehrle we’ve all come to know and love
You really need to work on learning how to use the reply function.
And detecting sarcasm, but really, the reply button would be a great start.
by Grinder in Training on Jun 19, 2008 10:30 AM CDT up reply actions
yeah thanks chief
i pretty much realized after what i posted earlier that he was probably being sarcastic…and i’ll work on the reply button thing too
i was not being sarcastic
just simply observing that his slow start may have been attributable to lesser workload in spring. maybe not
second point that if it means he is sharper in september then i’ll take it anyday
my bad for not clearing that up
i know you weren’t being sarcastic i was referring to an earlier post when some guy posted to DFA buehrle cuz he blows…and i just said replied to say why don’t we DFA the whole team and bring up the AA squad to play for us haha
scoper i think both the things you pointed out are good stuff
Anyone see Toby be interviewed after the game last night
He was definately nervious as to revenge for the shaving cream towels. It was pretty funny – I don’t think he ever really looked at the reporter – he was constantly watching his sides and back. Even the reporter noted his nerviousness it as he talked to him.
Top 100 update Goldstein BP
87. Aaron Poreda, LHP, White Sox
Eligible Next Year? Yes
Production: 3.31 ERA at High-A (73.1-67-18-46); 6.00 at Double-A (6-6-0-5)
Stock Report: Slightly down. He’s been promoted to Double-A for the second half of the season, but Poreda is not missing bats despite his size and velocity, as he’s made almost no progress with his breaking ball has.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
Gio
56. Gio Gonzalez, LHP, Athletics
Eligible Next Year? Most likely
Production: 5.58 ERA at Triple-A (71-78-38-66)
Stock Report: Down a bit. He’s frustratingly inconsistent, having allowed two or fewer earned runs in eight of 14 outings, but five or more runs five times.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
And finally Carter from the 51-100
99. Chris Carter, 1B, Athletics
Eligible Next Year? Yes
Production: .231/.356/.486 at High-A (70 G)
Stock Report: Down slightly. With 16 home runs in 247 at-bats, Carter is showing plenty of power, but his low average, large strikeout total (79), and weak production against lefties are all cause for concern.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
Why did we trade Carter?!?!?!
Low average, a lot of strikeouts, struggles against lefties… he’s a born White Sock if I’ve ever seen one!
Both feet on the bandwagon.
because
when i had lunch with kenny and jerry late last season, i told them that i thought carter was going to be an AAAA player at best and that the team should trade him while his value is high for carlos quentin (and not a guy like carlos quentin). jerry nodded his head at KW after i said this. then ozzie came over and started throwing bread rolls at kenny and spilled my gin and tonic. fun times.
