Not that you're wrong in this case,

but shouldn’t the logic of “small sample size” be applied to posts as well?

by madopal on Jun 19, 2008 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I take it that's a hyperbole.

And you wonder why everyone is so positive around here, lar…

Really? So if I find a single thread where he didn’t…does the universe implode or something?

by madopal on Jun 19, 2008 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

That's what I love about you, lar

You can dish it out, but you can’t take it, and if someone takes it wrong, it’s a “joke.” I wish I had a nickle for every new poster who’s throat you’ve jumped down, I’d have at least a sawbuck.

And as I said, we wonder why there’s so much sunshine around here.

by madopal on Jun 19, 2008 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

you're weird.

we make a joke every time SSH declares a game ova. it’s one of the things he does, along with providing us cubdates, relaying news about players we thought were long since retired, and concocting lineups.

by larry on Jun 19, 2008 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Huh?

So, as I said, they’re applied only to the players on the field? SSH can say the game is over with a lefty we haven’t seen throwing junk, and he’s right (Cub fan or no) 90% of the time, but an exception comes along, and someone calls him out on it….why?

That’s like me pointing to one case last year where the bullpen didn’t suck to prove stats are worthless.

Anyone else care to make regular bets on this offense coming back from 6 down in this situation?

by madopal on Jun 19, 2008 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

i like how two games against the pirates is a small sample size

but three games against the rockies is more than enough for him to continue beating this one into the ground. i think this may actually be a schizophrenic SSH posting.

by larry on Jun 19, 2008 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions

i think you missed the point of that

the term is meant to be used when a mediocre or at least unaccomplished pitcher comes out of nowhere to dominate for one specific night against the sox. its really to disregard it as a small sample size, an anomaly, a bad night. or at least thats what i always thought.

been keeping scores in an excel sheet for every game for AL competitors (all central exc KC, BOS, NY, LAA, OAK) since ‘05.

Except last year, when the season ended in June.

but he said you can't answer excel.

now go back and recount every source you got the game scores from. unless you recorded that info in the spreadsheet.

excellence?

he’s right I could be dyslexic.

call it the closest i’ll ever get to a diary, so yeah i record it.

I’m already into August. Anybody want to know how it comes out?

ah-hah

so its voodoo, not sorcery.

no no, I like surprises. as long as they win the WS.

cool, thanks

i was thinking (my first mistake) whether one could infer anything from the differential between median and mean runs scored per game.

for instance, if a team has a higher than average mean r.p.g. but a lower than average median, one might discount the mean when calculating projected season records.

like i said, my first mistake was ‘thinking’.

While we're at it

Here’re the selected AL teams’ medians vs oppo:

SOX- 5 vs 3
BOS- 5 vs 3
DET- 5 vs 4
OAK- 4 vs 3
CLE- 4 vs 4
NYY- 4 vs 4
LAA- 4 vs 4
MIN- 4 vs 5

Don’t have the Rays (yet).
