Baseball-Intellect: Gordon Beckham Compares to...Alex Rodriguez?
Continuing our 2008 Major League Baseball Draft Preview, we look at college shortstop Gordon Beckham. The 21 year old from the University of Georgia is regarded as the second best shortstop in this year's draft.
Not to be confused with the draft's top rated shortstop, Tim Beckham, Gordon's game is much more different than the raw, but extremely talented high schooler of whom is also from Georgia.
You'll hear a lot of the cliches associated with Beckham given his small size; scrappy, hard-working, and other intangible-oriented descriptions. While they may be true, Beckham can also play a litle bit too.
Beckham possesses some pretty good pop at the plate; maybe not as good as his college numbers indicate, but above average overall. Let's take a look at his swing: ...

A couple of Brett Lawrie links
Since he plays for multiple travel teams, seeing Lawrie of late has involved traveling to warm-weather spots like Florida and, recently, the Dominican Republic. Last week’s trip with the junior national team was the biggest eye-opener, as the squarely-built Lawrie slammed eight home runs in eight games against professionals still in the Dominican, including five in a doubleheader that had scouts from plenty of teams with high first-round picks in attendance. Suddenly, he’s lined up for a series of private workouts this week, including one with a team picking in the single digits. He could be the first selection on Thursday that raises some serious eyeballs.

Sickels personal mock draft
http://www.minorleagueball.com/
1)Rays: Tim Beckham, SS, Georgia HS: Seems like the most logical pick to me.
2) Pirates: Pedro Alvarez, 3B, Vanderbilt: Pirates prove they are willing to spend $$.
3) Royals: Buster Posey, C, Florida State: Royals opt for close-to-ready bat.
4) Orioles: Brian Matusz, LHP, San Diego: Can’t pass him up.
5) Giants: Justin Smoak, 1B, South Carolina: Excellent bat, close to ready.
6) Marlins: Kyle Skipworth, C, California HS: The rumors make sense to me.
7) Reds: Aaron Crow, RHP, Missouri: Best player available.
8) White Sox: Gordon Beckham, SS, Georgia: System thin on hitting could use him.
9) Nationals: Aaron Hicks, RHP, California HS: Nats decide he’s a pitcher.
10) Astros: Christian Friedrich, LHP, Eastern Kentucky: Astros opt for “safe” college pitcher.
11) Rangers: Eric Hosmer, 1B, Florida HS: Rangers shell out big bucks.
12) Athletics: Brett Wallace, 3B, Arizona State: Classic Oakland pick.
13) Cardinals: Tim Melville, RHP, Missouri HS: Cards opt for high-quality local talent.
14) Twins: Brett Lawrie, INF, Canada HS: Twins pick cold-weather bat, hoping for another Morneau and worried that he won’t last to 27..
15) Dodgers: Ethan Martin, RHP, Georgia HS: Best high school pitcher still on board tempts Dodgers; he fits their mold.
16) Brewers: Josh Fields, RHP, Georgia: Should help in the majors quickly.
17) Blue Jays: Yonder Alonso, 1B, Miami: Would be a steal at this slot and I think he’s got a good chance to fall here.
There is a possibility that we wind up choosing between: Crow, Alonso, Wallace, Hosmer and Lawrie.
That might be the worst case scenario for us. In that scenario I might just take Wallace, although Crow would seem to be the most talented. Hopefully Beckham’s still there.

MVN Draft University Mock Draft
1) Rays – Buster Posey – Fills a need + could be an all star. Lacks the upside of what most like with a #1 pick. TB Spotlight here.http://mvn.com/mlb-draft/2008/06/01/mvn-draft-university-mock-draft/2) Pirates – Pedro Alvarez – They CAN’T screw this up. Can they?
3) Royals – Eric Hosmer – KC loves Hosmer. If price it too much, look for T. Beckham or Justin Smoak.
4) Orioles – Tim Beckham – If Beckham is gone, the Orioles have a tough decision between Smoak, and Matusz. Spotlight here.
5) Giants – Justin Smoak – they will pass on Matusz as they are focused on a polished impact bat. If Smoak and T. Beckham are gone, it will be interesting to see who they turn to to out of the Hosmer, Posey, G. Beckham, Alonso, and Wallace group.
6) Marlins – Yonder Alonso – Marlins have been rumored to be on Skipoworth and Alonso. Still no pitcher taken.
7) Reds – Aaron Crow – They will have to decide which pitcher they want if this happens. Could really have something with their pitching staff. Soon. Spotlight here.
8) White Sox – Gordon Beckham – Obvious pick if he is there.
9) Nationals – Kyle Skipworth – Typical Bowden pick, high upside. Spotlight here.
10) Astros – Shooter Hunt – I do not think they will spend the money on Matusz – or anyone.
11) Rangers – Brian Matusz -If this happens, we might hear the Ranger’s brass rejoicing all the way from Orlando.
12) A’s – Brett Wallace – I have to believe the A’s would love for Wallace to get to them.

Beckham the Elder seems to be the Internet consensus
I would only be cool with that if he can stick at short. If Lawrie is going in the 10-12 range, I wouldn’t mind seeing if he could stick at catcher. C and SS are major needs, but then so is a legit Konerko replacement. Swisher has no business in that conversation, btw. He’s a last ditch fill in.
dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

It seems like the more I read about these guys...
the less I know who I want the Sox to take. I have some favorites, but those guys aren’t likely to make it to eight (Smoak and Skipworth, namely). I’m reading about an aversion to taking Wallace, but I don’t know why that is—he seems like as good a bet as anyone to become a solid (albeit unspectacular and not star-potential) .275/.400/.500 hitter. Beckham is pretty intriguing, although (repeating myself here) I’d want to be 100% certain that my scouts believed he’ll be able to stick at SS.
Suffice it to say I don’t think I’ll have a reason to be mad on draft day, unless they do something completely out of left field.
by CWSKeith on Jun 2, 2008 6:45 PM CDT 0 recs
I'd be ecstatic
with a .900 OPS career hitter. That’s a star in my book. As an example a career OPS of .900 would rank 23rd among active players between Teixeira and Ordonez. Now if you’re talking .900 as a 3 year peak then that’s more like Konerko, but that’s not too bad either.

That seems fair
I think I actually like Wallace a bit better than I like Beckham… I just see too many scouting reports questioning whether he’ll be able to stay at SS. Furthermore, while I would never advocate drafting for need, the Sox have to think about replacing Konerko and Thome in the relatively near future. And as I mentioned, Wallace seems as good a bet as anyone to hit major league pitching.
Would Nick Johnson be a fair comparison for Wallace, or is that just my brain putting two first-base types with non-ideal bodies together? I say Johnson because the only question about Wallace seems to be how much power he’ll hit for. Then again, Johnson has only hit for 20 homers or more once (some of that is probably his inability to stay healthy, but nevertheless it is what it is)—so maybe Johnson with a bit more power and a bit less OBP?

Even if Beckham had to move to 2B
If he was capable of an .850 OPS peak, that would be fantastic. 2B has recently been easy to fill with .700 – .750 OPS veterans, but I don’t see many cheap 2Bs with +.800 OPS production.
If Sox scouts think Beckham can stick in the middle infield I’d be happy with that pick. The thing that alarms me about Wallace is that the only team that seems to be looking at him in the top ten is the Sox. All-in-all I’d be happier seeing a guy at a premium defensive position drafted. But as long as it’s not an obvious reach, I won’t complain. Much.

I really dont so a bad player in the top 10 bunch, even Wallace. Unless the Sox decide to go cheap again theres no reason to be very worried this year.

Jay Bruce is ridiculous...
The Reds fan from Cincinnati that I work with has a perpetual hard-on about him. He just bought his jersey.
Jay Bruce went 2-for-4 with a home run as the Reds lost to the Phillies on Monday night.
Bruce also scored on an Adam Dunn double. After his first week in the big leagues, Bruce is hitting .577 with three home runs, seven RBI and 12 runs. For comparison’s sake, Corey Patterson was hitting .200 with four homers, 13 RBI and 21 runs in 45 games before getting demoted.

Insane...
Phillies with the third straight MVP?
Chase Utley went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer as the Phillies beat the Reds on Monday night.
Utley has now homered in five straight and seven of the last eight games, bringing his total to a league-leading 21. His home runs have come in streaks this season, and the latest one has raised his numbers to .320/.403/.680. Awesome.

How sad is it that Carlos Zambrano is a better hitter than half of our lineup?
by SSH2005 on Jun 2, 2008 10:12 PM CDT 0 recs
FYI.
Zambrano’s 875 OPS is better than all the Cubs starting tonight except Lee and Ramirez.

Been watching (usually with my hands in front of my face)
For a few years, since it’s the only ball in town (close). I haven’t bought item 1 of their paraphernalia, and won’t hop on the “Love the Rays!” bandwagon. It’s cool to see a loser team finally emerge from the chrysalis that has no “rivalry” (hate) baggage. They are like India (unless you are British or Paki).
