and when he gives up hits, they tend to go for extra bases.
Not to mention his well-documented tendency (that dates back from his days in Houston and Oakland) to completely melt down when an important game is on the line.

If you want numbers...
he blew six saves in just half a season as closer for the 2004 A’s. They finished in second place by one game. He blew four saves last year, despite being hurt most of the year.
Put him in a high-leverage situation, and there’s a decent chance he strikes out the side. There’s also a decent chance he’ll blow up completely. I simply don’t trust him with the game on the line.

if coming in with the bases clear in the 7th with a 2 run lead is high leverage,
then pretty much every time he’s pitched this year has been as well. and he has done very well overall.

his 4.5 bb/9 is high, i'll give you that.
but coming into today, he’d given up 6 extra base hits in 33+ innings. even after today, 8 (of 29 hits) in 34+ innings ain’t too shabby.
