How much a marginal win is it?

Over a full season, how many marginal wins are we talking?

Also does the analysis take into account the effect on run prevention, not just run creation? If this were the AL, the right move would be to stick with your starter. So the question is twofold – is that the best move from a run prevention point of view, and if it is, what is the difference between the cost on the run production side vs the cost on the run prevention side.

I’d have to say pulling Danks was definitely not the right move in that situation- although I don’t know your team that well…does he usually stay on a fairly low pitch count? He was only at 85, could have definitely taken it into the 8th.

The other strange move to me…is Thome THAT bad in the field these days that he can’t play 1B? I don’t see why you don’t keep swisher in the OF and Thome at first. Seemed weird to the

by Canseco's Roid Party on Jun 20, 2008 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

The math's been done, so I consider that strategem decided.

Thome is an injury risk, primarily. The cost of him playing a game or two at what is now an unfamiliar position seems to not make sense when the overall effect of a single loss is minimal (and of course, he’s only 1/9 of the offensive side of that loss). Not to mention he’s bad against lefties, which of course Lilly is.

by colintj on Jun 20, 2008 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Got it. I am not familiar with the math you’re referring to, is it in “the book”? Haven’t read that (was a math major so I’m coming from that side of things, just thought this seemed unusual. although i guess the cubs pitchers ALWAYS have ridiculously high pitch counts by the 6th anyway so it doesn’t come up much over there) as I like the double-switch type strategy in the NL a ton, it would be interesting to read. As Ozzie is far from the most mathematically sound manager in the game, I doubt that is why he did it. But hey had the PH led to a big inning, it would have been a great call.

by Canseco's Roid Party on Jun 20, 2008 5:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Ozzie is actually pretty good at this sort of in game stuff

the perception that he’s an idiot is a matter of the media’s characterization rather than an actual analysis of his moves. besides it isn’t like the MSM is good at that sort of breakdown anyway. for me,it’s his random assed bunt tendencies that irritate. aside from that, he rarely errs egregiously. and the book in question is literally titled The Book. it’s by Tom Tango et. al.

You know

I’m as big of a saber USE FUCKING REASON guy as anyone - but this is the rare situation where I say fuck the math. So, what - the winning percentage goes up for teams on the road up 3-1 when they pinch hit their hitter in the top of the 7th: but anyoen with one good eye could see Danks was pitching excellently.

One thing that seems to happen is that Ozzie’s leash is too long with the veteran starters and often not long enough for Danks.

Previous 4 innings,

5 K, 4 GO, 2 FO, 1 “soft line drive single (Gameday description)”.

NOBODY (underlined, in red) was hitting him hard.

The real strength of our bullpen has been getting the ball to Linebrink in 8 and Jenks in 9. Why mess with success? The only valid reason for taking out Danks is he told Ozzie he was tiring and I very much doubt that happened. At least let him pitch in the 7th til someone gets on. Worst case its 3 – 2, and bring on the bullpen.

It was a gut move and it didn’t work. IMO, it was the wrong move. I still think that overall he handles his pitchers masterfully, but no one is perfect.

Pitching, defense, health.

by ballyb on Jun 20, 2008 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

a couple of things.

as cheat pointed out, the real problem with the white sox offense in the sixth was that it left danks to lead off the top of the 7th. the choice of whether to allow danks to hit or to pinch hit was really what precipitated the pitching change, not that danks was getting hit hard or that he was tired. that was the strategic move, not the pitching change.

second, dotel has had a couple of rough outings but overall has done very well in the 7th and 8th.

Half Dome is my bitch. Shasta is next.

by Toonderstrook on Jun 20, 2008 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions

It wasn't cut and dried,

but fuck the math (& I’d like to see a reference that says pinch hit for a pitcher who’s faced the minimum in the previous 4 innings and has a 2 run lead AND a STUD bullpen to call on), you gotta let Danks start the 7th.

Pitching, defense, health.

by ballyb on Jun 20, 2008 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

i don't think it was cut and dried either.

and surely if danks had made the last out in the top of the 6th or this had been the series next weekend, he would have started the seventh. but we can’t judge the move based purely on the 85 pitches, mowing them down facts, because danks was going to lead off the seventh. no matter whether we agree with ozzie’s call or not, it wasn’t as simple as let the guy with the hot hand stay in the game.

Half Dome is my bitch. Shasta is next.

True

It still hurts to give up a game like this when you have the lead and Danks was looking good… but lets face it, the Cubs are really good this year. Especially at home

I asked a simple question...

and you couldn’t answer it.

Maybe that’s why you don’t have a job.

honestly

the only thing more predictable than the Sox meltdown was Jabroni’s meltdown.

hence “crickets
