College World Series Final: Game 1
That other thread needs to be pushed down. There's no White Sox game tonight. So watching the Sox future (Gordon Beckham) is the next best thing.

Andrews had approximately zero chemistry with him. She isn’t good at what is an utterly extraneous job. But hey, ESPN thinks Mike Patrickis the guy to call this series, so there’s going to be a certain degree of suck either way.

Matchup: White Sox (41-34) at Dodgers (35-40), 7:10 p.m. PT
Probable Starters: Mark Buehrle (96 2/3 IP, 4.84 RA, 1.36 WHIP, 55 K) vs. Derek Lowe (97, 4.55, 1.28, 67)
Pythagorean Record: Chicago, 45-30 (367 RS, 296 RA); Los Angeles, 37-38 (318 RS, 319 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Chicago, #3; Los Angeles, #18
Prospectus: It’s a rematch of the 1959 World Series, which was the first post-season appearance for the White Sox since the Black Sox scandal of 1919, and the first for the Dodgers in LA after moving west in 1958. The series was the first ever played on the West Coast, and the first in 11 years that was not played in New York. The White Sox won the first game of the Series behind Cy Young winner (and future Hall of Famer) Early Wynn, but LA won four of the next five games to take its second World Series title. The series was notable for the two pinch-hit home runs hit by Chuck Essegian, who hit just one homer during the regular season. Joe Torre, who grew up in Brooklyn but was a New York Giants fan, was 19 at the time, and one season away from making his major league debut with Milwaukee, while Ozzie Guillen would not be born for five more years.
Lowe is in the final season of the four-year, $36 million dollar contract he signed after going 3-0 in the 2004 playoffs to help lead Boston to the World Series. Signed by former GM Paul DePodesta, Lowe has turned out to be an excellent value for the Dodgers—over the first three seasons he made 101 starts and pitched 640 innings with a 4.36 RA, and is on his way to a similar campaign this season. Lowe’s signing looks even better when you consider the other long-term deals that were handed out to starting pitchers that offseason. Here’s a list of the pitchers who inked deals of three or four years after 2004, along with their performance in the first three seasons of those contracts:
Pitcher Years, $ IP 2005-07 ERA+ 2005-7
Derek Lowe 4, $36 639.1 118
Pedro Martinez 4, $53 377.2 124
Odalis Perez 3, $24 372.1 82
Eric Milton 3, $26 370.1 77
Kris Benson 3, $23 357.1 97
Matt Clement 3, $26 256.1 90
Russ Ortiz 4, $33 227.0 65
Jaret Wright 3, $21 214.1 87
Carl Pavano 4, $40 111.1 89
if that’s not an indictment of long-term contracts for pitchers of a certain type, i don’t know what is.
i'm retired. don't reply to me. and get off my lawn.

IP 41.1
ER 9
ERA 1.97
H 31
BB 9
K 28

GB 60.5%

CC to Cubs?
“One rival executive who has spoken to Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry recently came away convinced the Cubs will make a big play for a front-line starting pitcher in the coming weeks – perhaps an acknowledgment the Cubs believe they have all the other pieces in place to end the franchise’s 100-year drought without a World Series title,” the Washington Post reports.
And that pitcher is rumored to be C.C. Sabathia.

This report has been circulated around and around and around. The cubs want to upgrade pitching, they dont have the bullets for CC, etc etc. I wouldnt be surprised to see them get someone like Randy Wolf instead.

They dont have anything considered MLB ready, and no true top prospects. its not my opinion, its the opinion of both scouts and execs around the league. They dont have the players to form a package that could compete with other teams that are interested.

At least for me, the difficulty with this season
has been remaining even keel. IMO, the distribution of wins and losses for the Sox has made this difficult.
Starting April 29, 8 weeks ago today, the Sox have had the following streaks of 3 or more W or L (with shorter 1 or 2 game streaks intermingled):
L6
W3
L3
W8
L7
W7
L3
W3
L3
Nine streaks of 3 games or more. In total, the Sox are 27 – 24 over that period.
The Phillies are 7 over .500 and lead their division. Over the same period (April 29 to date), they are a similar 28 – 23. However, they’ve only had 5 streaks of 3 games or more.

I would have liked to see the Sox
pick up Graffanino (if his knee would hold up) and start him in Charlotte and move him up when he is ready. Dump Ozuna. (the last part is wishful thinking)

what does he provide that we don't already have in Charlotte?

By making an error for the other guys, I suppose we should be grateful (dead).
My wife thinks he’s cute. She also thinks Normar and Jim Furyk are cute.

Grindy-ness
No, seriously – I just think he is a better ballplayer than Ozuna, hits better and can play the same positions. Getz is similar and may be better, not sure and I don’t want Fields sitting on the bench. Why not give him a shot and see if you can catch lighting for half a year? He has postseason experience and has played with some of the guys on the ballclub before…
Toonderstook, he didn’t help us win the world series…

Got Larry to respond. Therapy is working well, step one – complete.
Step two – also complete as Larry made me look like an ass.
Step three – ??? Not sure what that is, but I’ll tell you when we get there.

Jason Bourgeois
is red hot and if they want a better Ozuna, he’s it. I’m all for it unless there are better, cheaper candidates. Ozuna is worthless.

It also appears
to me that they are grooming Chris Getz to be one of those multi-purpose players….you never know from day to day whether he’ll be at short, second, OF…etc.

One more thing.
Is Clayton Richard a prospect capable of helping the big league club at some point. Big. Left-handed. Having a good year. Moving up. Good numbers.

The error – forgot about that. I was thinking he was gone after 2003….but, forgot about the bosox debacle.

and they say being a pitching coach is hard.
pshaw.
Ragnhild (Tromso): Are you saying the Reds “developed” Volquez in Spring Training? Isn’t that giving them a tad too much credit?
Steven Goldman: No, I don’t think it is. Pitchers are such complex messes that the smallest tweak can change things dramatically. One of my favorite baseball stories, which I’ll severely shortcut here, involves Mike Morgan, who was the doormat of the AL for years. He got to the Dodgers and they moved him from one side of the rubber to the other. Suddenly pitches that batters took for balls were strikes, and he was a good pitcher for the next several seasons.

moves from the right side to the left side depending on the batter. Doesnt seem to help much. They should take a cue from John Danks and just be effective with an agressive fastball.
