2008 NBA Draft: Rose or Beasley?

I know, BlogaBull is thataway, but I think it'd be cool to see what the Sox fans who follow the Bulls think should happen tomorrow when the Bulls draft 1st overall in the draft. It's a huge moment for the team considering how disappointing last season was. I have been wavering between Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley, but think Rose is the best fit for the Bulls. He's got great size and athleticism for a point guard, and had an incredible NCAA tournament, destroying 1st round prospects like DJ Augustin in the process.

Oh, and not to skew the poll, but Derrick Rose is a White Sox fan :)

any rumors for a trade?

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

not by the bulls that i've heard yet.

lots of talk about miami wanting nothing to do with beasley at this point and trying to trade down for mayo or maybe even taking him outright at #2.

For the Bulls, no

The only draft day trade the Bulls could be involved in is trading Hinrich to Portland for the 13th pick and an expiring contract. My wish is to see Nocioni shipped to Siberia, but I don’t think they are trading him just yet.

Riley seems unimpressed by Beasley so much that he is willing to trade down, because his new mancrush is Jerryd Bayless. I think Beasley’s “character issues” are holding him down now, although I can’t see how his prankster mentality would be a big deal when Wade is there to keep him in check.

Not as of yet... I heard we might get Shawn Marion for Capt. Kirk and Tyrus

If it was up to me I would try to keep Tyrus. Maybe Del Negro won’t bench him after a missed shot. I voted for Rose, I just don’t see Beasly as a power forward and I am not sure he has the skill set to be play small fwd. Not sure what Rose will bring his first year… hopefully some excitement though.

Rose

Quick hits why

Rose instantly makes Tyrus better and for that matter Noah and Deng as well.

Beasley while undoubtedly good seems to small to play the post-game the Bulls so desperately want. He could turn into a McHale, but that’s a tall order for him.

New rules make point guard play even more important. Granted the Lakers and Celts didn’t have a fantastic PG, but they did have Kobe, KG, and Pierce.

Rose was better than his college stats would indicate. He played on a stacked team limiting his scoring numbers, but showing his ability to play within the team and Memphis plays dribble drive motion system which supresses the number of assists you would get from him

Then there’s this

Plus imagine what he could do with a proper NBA diet rather than candy!

I can't understnad these guys

They know they’re going to go to the NBA, why not take care of your body?

Hell, sophomore year of high school I gave up caffeine (specifically pop) for vball and soccer and I was nothing more than a D2 level athelete at my prime…why can’t these guys do that?

by jeeves on Jun 26, 2008 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because they think it doesn't affect them

and I wonder, at age 20-21, how much it really does. They are so supremely gifted and are used to stomping everyone in sight I imagine it takes an ass-whipping on the court for them to listen.

I’ve heard too many people say that Beasley was only dominant at the college level because of his size.

Rose is just too much of a unique talent to pass up.

by Hazymania on Jun 26, 2008 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Beasley will do fine in the NBA

The more I see him, the more he reminds me of a young Larry Johnson. But, that’s not the kind of guy you can build a franchise around. Rose is a leader, tireless worker, and actually has superstar talent. His athleticism and size gives him a huge advantage at PG where there are tons of weak defenders.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 26, 2008 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah, his size translates to the NBA

He measures close to 6’8 with shoes on, so it won’t be that much of a stretch. Plus he doesn’t live in the paint, he can score from anywhere. Whether he is good at defense remains to be seen.

by Ozzie Montana on Jun 26, 2008 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i like the rose pick for a lot of reasons.

i’m concerned about beasley’s size and ability to play the 3 if he has to.
a rose pick means something is going to be shaken up…i think the current mix is stale, and if they take beasley everything else can pretty much stay the same.
rose already plays defense.
free agents want to sign up to play with a guy who can and will get them the ball, not someone who constantly demands it.

and obviously he played for d’antoni and may have been influenced by him. but i am glad the bulls didn’t end with d’antoni. there would have been no way for paxson to exert any organizational philosophy without a huge clash, and it isn’t as if d’antoni has won a thing in the nba.

Yeah, but they just looked so idiotic for over a month

If they had just hired Rick Carlisle from the get go none of this would have happened. Del Negro is obviously a blank slate, but that man is a smooth talker. If they win 20 games I’m convinced he’ll find a way to sugarcoat it.

Ideally move Hughes, but that ain't happening

Gordon is really good…he had a tough year last year, because he was the only consistent threat for the Bulls, with Rose penetrating, BG would be that much more dangerous.

I really can’t decide between Hinrich and Gordon

by jeeves on Jun 26, 2008 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem is Hinrich's contract

I think he’s the best 6th man on the team, but unfortunately he’s paid starting money. Gordon can’t play defense and thus becomes worth less (not worthless) in the 4th quarter. Either way, you can’t justify paying 10mil+ to two back up guards.

Don't worry, I know how it works

I even know for example, that now for youth teams, you can no longer grab whomever you want, they have to live within the clubs “territory” for lack of a better work. So like that famous class at ManU with Giggs, Becks, the Neville’s etc…only Nicky Butt would have been at the ManU youth team with today’s rules

by jeeves on Jun 26, 2008 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's not quite accurate

both historically and for what the system is now. first, the nevilles are from bury. which is greater manchester. second, what you’re saying doesn’t apply so much to the “youth” team but to levels lower than that. finally, there are ways around such rules if you want to sign younger players – money certainly talks, as he alluded to above, along with other creative options.

I still appreciate the early Beatles stuff

I’m not hating on them by any means, because I can appreciate the cultural impact and it takes skill to write stuff that good and that catchy…I was saying I could buy someone hating on the early Beatles

by jeeves on Jun 26, 2008 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to hate on them

But I just don’t find their music to be good and they were the first over-hyped boy band. That is culturally significant, I suppose, but not so interesting to me.

I agree that they were good songwriters because when other people play their music, it’s sounds good, but they were crappy musicians, which they have acknowledged in the past.

Like WU says, I guess you had to be there.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Have to disagree

They were incredible musicians. They each played several instruments and you can’t discount songwriting ability when considering talent.

Because someone isn’t a virtuoso doesn’t mean they’re a “crappy musician”

I believe in Harvey, Illinois

by Hazymania on Jun 26, 2008 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No shit, Hazy

You guys have been raised on comparisons to Eddie VH, Clapton, etc. They didn’t exist back then. These were the first guys to play orchestral music on their own – no small feat. Harrison’s guitar would never be mistaken for Jeff Beck, but the boy could play. And Clapton had a lot in common with him – took his wife.

Now, Ringo sucked as a drummer, I’ll give you that. But McCartney was routinely givne the mantle as ‘best bassist in rock” (though Entwistle might’ve had a right to be pissed).

CWS: Slashing negative expectations since May, 2008.

by winningugly on Jun 26, 2008 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can tell you that Ringo does not suck. Can you imagine any other beats to those songs than the ones he played? Sometimes it’s about the notes you don’t play.
