Jim Callis' draft day mock

has us taking Yonder Alonso

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/mock-draft/2008/266271.html

he got the first 15 picks right in 2005, which is unheard of.

Definitely pissed me off...

A minor league farm system that desperately needs talent should be open to spending a few bucks. You can’t justify spending $4.5 million on a year of Juan Uribe but not on a possible future stud that will be with the team for years.

as long as it's not donny lucy

It’s definitely a big hole in our system, and 1B is a lot easier to fill through free agency if we don’t have one come up through our system soon.

Wallace works for me

Jim’s going to experience some kind of lingering injury that’s going to suck
him back into realizing he’s almost 40 and everyone else his age is calling games by now.

by colintj on Jun 5, 2008 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

First baseman Chris Carter did everything he could to give Stockton (Athletics) a win last night. Down 1-0 in the ninth, Carter launched a two-run homer run to give his team a 2-1 lead. Bakersfield (Rangers) tied it in the bottom of the inning and Carter strolled to the plate with a runner on in the 11th. Once again he sent it packing, giving his team a 4-2 lead and ultimately another win.

No regrets, but this has a flair for the dramatic… I think he hit something like 5 or 6 walkoffs in ‘06, added a few more last year, and I think this is #2 already this year.

More pre-draft buzz (1:57 p.m.): Law is hearing that catcher Kyle Skipworth from Riverside, Calif., will indeed go to Florida at No. 6.

by Ryno on Jun 5, 2008 1:12 PM CDT reply actions

So:

1. Tim Beckham
2. Posey
3. Alvarez
4. ?
5. ?
6. Skipworth

Looking at Callis’ it seems like Posey could drop to us if the Fish are taking Skipworth. That would be ideal. Super ideal.

I imagine teams are "urged" to take the whole five minutes...

because there’s really no reason these teams need anything more than 30 seconds to make this pick. It pretty absurd, and this is the drawback of the draft being ESPN’ized.

BA says:

Beckham’s outstanding junior year has been light-years ahead of anything he did in his first two college seasons. He was not even considered a guaranteed first round pick before the season began and was undrafted out of high school. He is a line-drive hitter who knows how to work the count. Beckham has average power but is not a home run hitter, although he did lead the Cape Cod League in homers last summer. He knows how to steal bases thanks to good instincts but has only average speed. Some project him as a second baseman because he may become too big for shortstop where his arm is average and his range is above average. Think Aaron Hill. (posted by Marc Hulet)

From Law:

He wasn’t supposed to be available at this spot, so the White Sox must be thrilled. He play second base, but there’s a good chance he stays at shortstop. He has tremendous baseball instincts. He’ll probably move pretty quickly through the system. He instantly becomes the best prospect in the organization the day he signs.

Nationals have Christian Marrero and the Astros have nobody.

If Smoak slips past a team that takes a position player, then you canprobably infer that the clubs didn’t like him as well as the Internet experts. I’ll take the clubs’ opinion in that case.

dude, that was totally not swish you saw on rush street last night. swish was at home playing xbox.

FWIW BP really likes the pick
Sheehan: I almost always make the “best player” argument at this point in the draft. When it comes to taking pure hitters, though, I think you need to bow to the reality of positional value.

Getting Gordon Beckham at #8 is a really nice pick for the White Sox.

Goldstein: Very good pick for them, and they are THRILLED that he’s still on the board. He could move very quickly through the system. Did somebody just compare him to Jeter? really? Comp I still like is Khalil Greene’s bat with Jed Lowrie’s glove.

by The Wizard on Jun 5, 2008 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Greene is a league average hitter playing SS

That would be pretty good return for the Sox. Unfortunately for the Sox, if Smoak becomes 125-140 OPS+ fixture at first, it probably won’t matter what Beckham does…

by CWSKeith on Jun 5, 2008 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

it's only 20 points better than Uribe's career OPS

I was hoping for better than “fine”with the 8th pick in the draft.

by Ryno on Jun 5, 2008 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

He's playing half his home games at PETCO

as such, OPS+ is a better measure, and he’s been league average for his career. That’s extremely valuable for a SS.

by CWSKeith on Jun 5, 2008 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

hope away

then check out reality. league average is a pretty good result at this slot. and one might argue that this draft didn’t quite have as much “premium” top ten talent as other drafts – though it’s often folly to predict such things at the time of the draft. plenty of very good players to choose from between 5 and 15, though. perhaps harder to make a bad mistake in this draft.

by larry on Jun 5, 2008 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

i knew someone would say that

i’m aware of the chances of success. what i was getting at was the idea of taking a guy who draws comparisons to a league-average major leaguer (beckham-greene) vs. a guy who draws comparisons to an above-average major leaguer (smoak-teixeira). seems like another “low floor” over “high ceiling” pick. but the sox’s system is so bereft of talent right now maybe they can’t afford to swing for the fences (no pun intended).

by Ryno on Jun 5, 2008 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

i can provide you comparisons that are more flattering for beckham and less flattering for smoak.

selective reading and citing. here’s an easy one: i need a white SS to compare a white SS to… if he played second, they’d be comparing him to utley. these comparisons are a joke. a big one. it’s to help people who haven’t seen a player visualize that player and they’re often piss poor. look at the actual discussion of skills.

Beck is NOT a bad pick at all:

Just before the Sox write him off as a bust, they can trade him for some other team’s 1st round bust. That seems to work out ok.

Clearly, that was sarcasm. I think the pick is fine. They know a hell of a lot more than I do.

by SSH2005 on Jun 5, 2008 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

no. if he doesn't hit it's a bad pick.

where he plays in the middle infield isn’t all that relevant.

by larry on Jun 5, 2008 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

seriously, how did this one get started?

and why do people keep parotting it? a move from the second most difficult position to the third most difficult and a guy is done? who is the idiot who started this? this thinking applies to CFs who can’t stick there. or to 3Bs who can’t stick there and, especially, can’t play the outfield. not a SS.

by larry on Jun 5, 2008 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

"Done" is going too far...

but a move to 2B certainly detracts from his value, but that’s stating the obvious (I’ll let you beat me over the skull for that one). You’re certainly correct when you made the statement about his bat—if he hits like the Sox think he will, it won’t matter if he’s at 2B or SS, he’ll be well above average in either case.

by CWSKeith on Jun 5, 2008 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

yes. but it does not make him a "bad" pick

i keep reading this eventuality like it’s some horrible thing. it’s not. the detraction from his value is rather minimal. i’m not even sure it bears much mention. SS to 2B would be a rather whatever move in my book.
