BP loves White Sox 4th rounder Drew O'Neil
Bryan Smith (4:42:33 PM PT): Another reliever worth mentioning, if only because I have some unique info: the White Sox take Drew O'Neil, from Penn State in the fourth. I LOVE this pick. I went through O'Neil's play-by-play logs last week, and look at what I found: O'Neil garnered 43 groundball outs in 2008, versus just THREE outfield flyball outs. He also had three infield flies and two lineouts. That's a sinker, and he's really about the same pitcher as Carlos Gutierrez.

O'neil allowed 1 extra base hit this season in almost 30 innings pitched
He allowed 4 last year for a total of 5 in just over 60 innings pitched.

14 BB / 24 K -> ace

he seems 40 years old here
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

Pretty fucking embarrassing...
Drafting his own son when he probably would be there in the 20th round.
Ummm, Danks?

Ridiculous overdraft.
At least wait until the 20th Round for the nepotism, Kenny.

From ESPN
The worst pick of the day belongs to the White Sox, who took GM Kenny Williams’ son in the fifth round. Kenny Williams Jr. is a senior at Wichita State who doesn’t even play every day and who was ruled academically ineligible for the 2007 season. He’s a good athlete and at least a 55 runner, but he’s 22 years old, played in 12 games in total prior to 2008, and wasn’t on most teams’ draft boards, although two or three other teams appeared to have had him inside the 10th round. It is hard to imagine that he would have been their 5th-round pick if his name was Kenny Smith, but the White Sox liked Kenny Jr.’s athleticism, something that was relatively scarce in this draft’s pool of college position players.
After thinking about what Philadelphia Eagles Andy Reid went through with his kids and the sad ending of Tony Dungys son life I’ve changed my opinion about the pick. Add that to the fact that some teams had him higher than the 10th round helped them justify the selection. However for a team that has had such corruption on the minor league level it recently this doesn’t look good from a person looking in.

Um
If he’s worried about his son fucking up his life he puts him on the godamn payroll in some other way—not wasting a draft pick. Make him a fucking coffee runner for 20/hr. Just don’t waste a draft pick.
That said, I’m not that upset. It’s frustrating, but this is a Chicago team afterall, some amount of cronyism must be overcome by default.

It's the MLB Draft, not the NFL Draft...
The 6th Round is still somewhat high to pick the GM’s son in an obvious move of nepotism.

At this point, I'm not that pissed about it because they still ended up with Jordan Danks...
but I think it is still embarrassing to the organization to completely overdraft the GM’s own son. It’s not like the scrub wouldn’t have been available later. By the way, Kenny Jr. was replaced with a pinch-hitter against Florida State after two AB’s and it wasn’t because he was hurt.

you seem to be flipping your drafts
awful comparison. you get actual players who will play on your team in the 6th round (and beyond) of the NFL draft very, very frequently. not so in the mlb. rarely do you get anything of value past the fifth round in mlb, and that’s pretty much only when you’re drafting someone who was rated more highly but fell for the usual reasons.
it's time to accept that we're powerless when it comes to the white sox and turn ourselves over to a higher power: KW
