boy, it's just painful to watch this team. i don't know how anyone could see anything positive about the sox.

How does Ozzie still have a job?

ROFL

Ok Mariotti. I think Jay is a closet Sox fan who puts this bullshit out there to fire the team up.

Yes, we suck big time ;)

Q coming back to earth. However, AJ/Swish/JC/Slash (yes, I am sticking witrh it) are in orbit. Paulie even picking it up a bit.

Gavin is looking like a #2-3 starter these days. No complaints.

I have to change my sig.

Things change...

The pitching has been great all season but the offense was putrid and it is finally performing. I do remember a time when you didn’t think much of Ramirez and thought that the Sox would be better with Uribe at 2B.

and i'm failing to see what those have to do with what i posted. but whatever.

if you’re only happy when a baseball team is scoring double digits, see above. and watch football or something.

I think people who were worried about the Sox not scoring many runs...

felt that way because if the pitching faltered at all, the Sox would start losing games.

These guys can hit. It was just a matter of when. I certainly don’t expect a two homer game out of Crede every game, but the dude has been clutch for the Sox. When he plays well, typically, the Sox play well.

Speaking of predictions

Mine that the Twins would be in first place this week is not looking good at this point. I’m not ready to admit being wrong yet though—there’s still a chance Selig could announce a league realignment tomorrow swapping the Sox and Seattle.

It'll probably sound lame

But I’m happy to be wrong. That’s not say things couldn’t fall apart, but I now expect the Sox to contend for a playoff spot through September. Should be very entertaining.

And while I’m admitting errors past, I’m thinking I was wrong about Gavin Floyd. Even if/when his ERA rises due to HR rate returning to normal, I think he’ll still be a useful pitcher. I was very doubtful, given that his minor league K rate was never great (in fact his minor league numbers weren’t that great). That’s turned out to be a great trade.

I never want to see Uribe play 2nd base for the white sox ever again. That is unless he is subbing in for Ramirez. What do you think the sox do once Uribe is ready to play?

john sickels' evaluation of white sox draft

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox focused on college talent in this draft. First round pick Gordon Beckham, University of Georgia shortstop, is a complete package type who instantly becomes the best position player in the thin Sox system as soon as he signs. He has very good power, should hit for a solid average and OBP, and will be able to remain at shortstop in my opinion.
The Sox didn’t have a second round pick, but stuck with the college bat concept in the third round, selecting Cal Poly third baseman Brent Morel. He has a good glove at third and should hit for average, but there’s some doubt about how much power he’s going to develop, though the White Sox seem confident in the stick. Fourth round pick Drew O’Neill is a closer out of Penn State with a 90+ MPH sinker delivered sidearm, unusually good velocity for that style. He looks like a middle reliever to me but should advance quickly. Fifth round pick Dan Hudson, RHP from Old Dominion, had an erratic season but gets his fastball into the 90s and has consistently posted strong K/IP ratios.
Sixth round Wichita State outfielder Kenny Williams (son of the White Sox GM) and seventh round Texas outfielder Jordan Danks (brother of Sox pitcher John Danks) provide family ties, athleticism, good outfield defense, but questionable hitting. Williams is very fast but is rather raw, while Danks has good strike zone judgment but has never shown the power expected by scouts.
The Sox filled out their draft with mostly college picks from this point. I like 8th round catcher Kevin Dubler (Illinois State) and 10th round RHP Stephen Sauer (Arizona State) as sleeper types. Overall this is a fairly conservative draft but it will help get some polished talent into the system quickly.

The Holy Trinity of JC (snicker), JD, and Slash: .295
Q (loses the ! for now): .282

And if you don’t like Slash, I can incorporate a NEW nickname: The Cuban Necktie. (And “slash” is still actively involved there.)

The Tampa Bay Rays are unraveling...
Matt Garza didn’t come back out for the fifth inning on Sunday after an altercation with catcher Dioner Navarro in the dugout.
Garza had allowed three runs and two homers in four innings, but he probably would have gone one more under normal circumstances. The argument appeared to start with pitching coach Jim Hickey visiting the mound in the fourth. After the inning, television cameras caught them in an apparent scuffle that spilled into the tunnel leading to the clubhouse. It was unclear whether any punches were thrown. Navarro remained in the game, but Garza didn’t return.

First the suspensions and now this. Maybe there is something to being a “veteran ballclub”?

I guess Garza shook off Navarro a few times and then serves up a gopher-ball. Then, Navarro goes to the mound and gets all up in Garza’s grill. Then, they get into it in the dugout after the inning is over.

No one will miss him...

I listened to North last week for a few minutes while driving to work. He spent 10 minutes talking about how Scott Linebrink has been a better reliever than Carlos Marmol so far this season based on Linebrink’s slightly lower ERA. Intelligent callers were trying to convince North that there are other important stats like WHIP and K/9, etc. but he wasn’t having it. Meanwhile, Marmol has given up 18 hits and 14 walks in 40 innings, good for a 0.80 WHIP. He also has 60 strikeouts so he is averaging 13.50 K’s per 9 innings.

not sure what they meant by "accidents"

but there’s a degree of logic to what they said if they’re referring to fatigue/injuries, especially w/r/t wood. a guy who hasn’t thrown this many innings since 2005, is an obvious injury concern overall, and has never thrown in relief for a full season is a risk. but how are they going to find out if he can handle it if they don’t put him out there? with both of these guys, i say use them until you use them up.
