Minor League News and Notes
According to Ed Collari, the radio announcer of the Winston-Salem Warthogs, Aaron Poreda is being promoted to Birmigham.
Brent Morel and the Whitesox come to terms on a $458,000 signing bonus.
http://www.bakersfield.com/136/story/466127.html
Jordon Danks expected to sign probably for 2nd round money
Thomas Collaro was released by the White Sox. He signed with the Reds organization and was assigned to Chattanooga of the Southern League.
Found over at Soxtalk
RHP Andrew O'Niel: He was an All Big-Ten closer at Penn State and broke a lot of records there for relievers. He was picked in the 8th roudnd by the Reds last season and seems to have some dominant stuff, giving up only 1 earned run in his last 2 seasons in Big Ten play and completing 22 of 23 saves in his PSU career. He is regarded as one of the nation's best relievers, being up for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award. He seems like he could move up pretty fast through the system and has been compared to Joe Smith of the Mets. Oh yeah, he allowed a TOTAL of 3 flyballs in 2008...all season.
RHP Daniel Hudson: He is a strikeout machine, ranking 2nd all time at ODU behind a certain Tigers pitcher named Justin Verlander. Has pitched 5 complete games in 3 seasons at ODU and has good size at 6'4, 215. He struck out 15 in a game against Delaware and has many ODU and CAA conference records.
OF Jordan Danks: We all know he has 1st round talent but the Boras factor played into him falling into the 7th round. A guy who can do it all, a 4 1/2 tool player as his power numbers aren't quite there yet. I'm hoping he turns out to be what we all expected, and more, of Brian Anderson/Jeremy Reed.
RHP Steven Upchurch: We picked him out of high school and he has signed a letter of intent to play at Auburn, but we could lure him with the dollars. He's a big RHP and was rated as Alabama's #1 HS pitcher and #72 overall on Rivals top 100 HS players. He's a power pitcher with a plus changeup and has potential to be a top of the rotation starter. He was part of Auburns nationally 5th ranked recruiting class.
RHP Dexter Carter: This is the guy I see Flash falling in love with. Apparently he has some "lighting" stuff, but with incredibly bad control. He's your Francisco Liriano potential pick. He's 6'6, 200 pounds and gets it up there. If they can teach him to get the ball over the plate consistently, he could be something special. Before transfering to Old Dominion, he was the 22nd rated junior college player.
LHP Kyle Long: The guy is a monster. 6'7, 280 pounds and gets it up in to the 90s but he also has some huge power potential as a hitter. People are giving the Sox no shot to sign him as he is really bent on playing at FSU next season but I'm sure he can be lured in with money. He hit over .500 in his high school career with a .900 slugging percentage and struck out 100+ as a pitcher too.

not unexpected to see poreda moving up
considering the time of year. and the fact that he was drafted with an eye to do just that. his k rate didn’t sparkle at w-s but i’d say he’s probably done all he’s going to do against high a competition.

i hope this was a move to get him some work with j.r. perdew
and not with a view to moving him to relief. j.r. must be happy that he’ll have some actual talent to work with now.

by the way, for jerry
not quite a press release, but they really don’t do those in the minors. quote from tim blackwell is probably as good as it gets.

SP or RP
I get the feeling the Sox are thinking more along the lines of a relief pitcher because of the way he’s being groomed . His strikeout rate doesn’t indicate that he’s developed his secondary pitches yet.

Haven't the Sox fared well sending pitchers to whomever they've got at B-ham?
Thinking of Gio and Egbert specifically, since we’ve had like zero talent go through there the last few years.

Some good info.
Thanks.
I’d be completely shocked if they moved their prized “high ceiling” pitcher to relief this quickly. Although his K rate hasn’t been great he’s still getting GB outs. His GB% is 55% (7th in his league). I think it’s probably just getting him to a pitching coach who is going to help him develop those secondary pitches. IMO I think it would take an extended period of sucking (like at least a whole year) prior to relegating him to relief. KW realizes that moving him to relief would drastically decrease his value.

could be putting him on the joba-esque path.
this team is in a bit of a win now mode.

well, not quite
when he came to the sox, they had pretty much decided to make him a reliever, i think. i was thinking more of the A+ as a starter, AA as a starter, and then AAA for one start and two relief appearances and then up to the big club for the stretch run that joba did last year.

Interesting thought
If it’s more of a temporary bullpen thing with the general expectation of going back to starting in the near future then that seems plausible.
However, the difference seems to me that he doesn’t really have the stuff (or least the K rate) to be a shut em down setup guy and we don’t have the need for a setup guy (like the Yankees did). To make him a reliever, even temporarily, so he can be a mop-up guy just doesn’t seem to be the way to go.
Well, I guess we shall see in 5 short days (or sooner).
by bhoov on Jun 9, 2008 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well, i haven't seen him pitch recently so i have no idea
but one would ordinarily expect his k rate and such to be improved in a relief role. he has the raw stuff to be a good set up man, of course (though, obviously, i was not attempting to put him in joba’s class – just noting the path and the potential need).
at any rate, the sox bullpen looks pretty stable right now. but injury and so on can change things. and there’s obviously a certain reliever in our pen who has such a history. all reading tea leaves, of course. but the promotion at this stage leaves the option open, should forthcoming events and poreda’s progression warrant it.

Personally I hope they don’t go that route though.

me, too
but if the sox make the playoffs while doing it, it will be tough to cry about it later. i simply want the bullpen to stay as is. especially considering i’m a known dotel lover.

According to some chump Project Prospect contributor...
Poreda should be challenged to throw his offspeed stuff in AA.
http://www.projectprospect.com/article/2008/01/24/chicago-white-sox-top-5
BTW… so much for Egbert o_0
by Daniel Berlyn on Jun 9, 2008 9:50 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Actually, that might be the thought also...
If the Sox aren’t liking what they are seeing from Broadway and Egbert, then finding out if Poreda is ready to throw strikes and get ground balls at an advanced level is a good idea. Kenny can decide if he thinks his cheap options are good enough. If not, he’ll know before the trade deadline. Poreda is really the only other potential hole filler as far as pitching goes. Everyone else at AA blows as far as I can remember.

Any guessees where Danks begins his pro career?
I presume rookie ball, but is there any chance he starts in Kanny?
by CWSKeith on Jun 10, 2008 2:35 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
that depends upon whether JR wants his club to make the phone call to the commissioner's office long before the deadline.
i’d question whether danks will “officially” sign in time to play before fall/winter league.

The Voyagers are landing today
The first wave of minor league baseball players who will represent the Great Falls Voyagers in the Pioneer League this summer are arriving this afternoon at 12:30 at Great Falls International Airport. Voyagers General Manager Jim Keough expects about 20 athletes to be on the plane today, with another dozen or so players coming in later.http://www.greatfallstribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080610/SPORTS/806100318Manager Chris Cron, who guided the Great Falls White Sox to the championship game last summer, will be arriving later tonight along with hitting coach Curt Hasler. Cron expects to conduct his first practice session Wednesday at noon at Centene Stadium. The workout will be open to public
“It looks like about 20 players will come in (Tuesday),” said Keough, “and a lot of those are from Bristol (Tenn.) or our returners. As they start signing draft picks, we’ll get more.”
Keough said third-round draft choice Brent Morel of Cal Poly, the second player chosen by the Chicago White Sox, has signed a contract and is expected to arrive Monday night, in time for Tuesday’s Pioneer League opener at Helena.
Sixth-round pick Kenny Williams Jr., son of the Chicago general manager, also has been assigned to the Voyagers, along with Onie Guillen, son of Whote Sox manager Ozzie Guillen.

because i’m calling bullshit on that whole thing. if the white sox and, by extension, major league baseball were falsifying documents which were permitting people to enter and work in this country 1) we would have heard about it already from someone who wasn’t play-acting on a shitty message board and 2) said players would not still be in this country working.

preview of tonight's opener for great falls
http://www.greatfallstribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080617/SPORTS/806170318
Cron’s current team does not lack for prospects, though. Among them are flashy shortstop Eduardo Escobar, veteran outfielders Jordan Cheatem, Kent Gerst and Johny Celis, first baseman Nick Mahin and catchers Mike Grace and Danny Jordan. All have previous professional experience.
In addition, the Voyagers will have outfielder Ken Williams Jr., son of the Chicago White Sox general manager, infielder Oney Guillen, son of Chisox skipper Ozzie. Cron’s club will also include enigmatic outfield prospect Lyndon Estill, who has great power but is prone to striking out.
“The new kids, the drafted players, are good-sized. Big and strong,” said Cron. “(Shortstop) Tyler Kuhn looks like he knows how to play the game. We had a ton of those guys last year and that’s why we had a lot of success, I think.”
Left-hander Kevin Skogley, who was 2-5 with a 4.72 earned-run average for last year’s Great Falls club, will get the start tonight. The 6-foot-6, 240-pounder is an Oregon native and former UNLV pitcher who was a 12th-round pick in the 2007 draft.
