no, not that KW. kenwo4life@aol.com, ya'll. the man. the myth. the legend. his insights are so deep. his rhetoric cutting. his logic simply unassailable. i feel his mastery of all things sox (and tiffany amber thiessen) should not be limited to the small audience that reads reifert's blog. he is an underappreciated artiste who deserves, nay, demands a wider audience. thus, i am taking it upon myself to provide a selection from his musings so that all of us here at SSS may read it, learn from it, and grow - both as sox fans and human beings.

That is a terrible move. Personally I would have rather designated Konerko for assignment than Ozuna. This is not good for the team. With Konerko coming back, Swisher will be moved be playing every day in center field…so what in the hell do you need three center fielders for? Wise is a lefty so I could see keeping him…… Brian Anderson should have been sent down if someone had to go. Konerko, Thome or Swisher should not be on the team. One of them has to go and to get rid of Ozuna for one of them sickens me. Ozuna can fill in at any position, hit lefties, pinch run….I am very upset over this.

For god sake ozzie….seriously what do you need a flag? How many times are you going to keep running out Linebrink in save situations. I have been saying it for over a week that this guy can’t close. It is painfully obvious yet Ozzie keeps putting him out there. This is going to ruin his confidence if it keeps up and he is going to be ** for the rest of the season. Octavio Dotel was a proven closer at one point in his career. This is the man that should be closing games out. Get your head out of your tushie Guillen and manage the damn game like it should be managed.
Other than that… even though they played like total slop, the manager has no clue on how to manage the bullpen now that Jenks is out and Carlos Quentin hit more pop ups than Willie Mays Hays we somehow managed to win. Any time you can separate is a good thing. And I am upset that Chef Ramsey picked Christina to run his kitchen instead of Petroza. Dont know if you watch Hells Kitchen but it is a quality show.
By kenwo4life@aol.com on July 9, 2008 12:05 AM
On July 3rd…TC, Scam, Swasfies or whatever and Mike Devereaux all were arguing with me that it doesn’t matter what inning Linebrink comes in…. Obviously it does matter as every time he has come in since he has given up at least one run. Now good ol Mike Devereaux is trying to steal my thunder like he said this first….I don’t think so pal! I called this one before it even started. Linebrink is not a proven closer. He never has been and never will be. He is an 8th inning guy, and a solid one.
Riefert hook me up with a scouting job i will turn the minor league system around quickly.

So Ozzie finally took my advice and used Octavio to close. Worked out a lot better didn’t it….cmon people i have been calling for that move since Jenks went down…give me my props for goodness sakes.
If JD was truly upset over Cabrera stealing third with one out because he distracted him JD wins the *** of the month award. The way JD has hit in this series Cabrera should have tried to steal home too. Again I am not sure what all that was about but that was the speculation.
Javy and Jose need to get back to normal. We will not survive if they keep pitching like this. We won’t be playing the Royals forever.
By the way, I like the blog a whole lot better when we are talking about Tiffany Thiessen than politics.

Personally liptak i think the sox can get away with jerry owens playing either outfield spot and batting leadoff…...that still leaves one outfield spot, one bullpen spot and even more so one pitcher for the starting rotation.
That will be the downfall of the sox this year. going into the year with danks and floyd is not the way to go. i dont like going into the year with one of them let alone both. I say look to rowand, andruw jones, carl crawford, miguel cabrera…you need one of them. then you also need to find a starter off the scrap heap. Freddy? Bartolo? i dont know but hopefully they will find someone.

Honestly those were pretty rational points
Other than the typical fan-boy love for Owens, I thing most enlightened fans were worried about Floyd being counted on to give anything as well as Swisher’s ability to play a passable CF.
The love for Owens blows my mind though, the guy was one of the worst hitting corner outfielders to ever play the game.

That was God awful. Konerko has been a pretty decent first basemen in years past. This year I think he is bringing his offensive struggles on defense with him. There have been a lot of plays that should have been made or could have been made that haven’t been. The sox are a better team without this balding buffoon. Thanks for a couple homers in the 05 playoffs but don’t let the door hit you in the caboose on the way out. Throw in the fact that I believe the other two center fielders may have made the play on Guillen’s fly ball (at least would have been a lot closer than Swisher) and you have another reason why the sox are better without him. I have never ever liked this guy since we got him (minus those couple homers in the 05 playoffs).
No I am not a kick boxer. If I was I would be kicking Konerko right in the Tush right about now.
But, we played like dump this series and won 2 of 3 so it isn’t all that bad. Shoulda lost all three to be honest.

I have never cared for Konerko. I have made this point clear from the moment I first appeared on this blog. He is a dog of a player and personally I would have rather kept Mike Cameron 10 years ago.
All I said about Aaron Rowand is the sox should not just be pushing him in newsletters about the final vote. Carlos Lee was and is a better ballplayer. Rowand IS the single most over rated ballplayer the white sox ever had. He had a good 2004. Other than that he wasn’t all that great. Even his “stellar” outfield play wasn’t that great. Sure he made a lot of diving catches, but most good center fielders IE Torrii Hunter don’t have to dive to catch those balls.
Crede should not be on the all star team and JD should be. Thats all I said about him. His defense has been bad and minus a week or two his offense hasn’t been that great either.
I like Alexei Ramirez, just needs to have his head in the game more often. I also like Juan Uribe. I don’t like AJ but he should have made the all star team.
The rumored deal was Ervin Santana and Howie Kendrick for Paul Konerko. Should have been made. Without hesitation.

If i had to bet the next person that will feel my wrath is still Paul Konerko. I don’t see anything offensively, defensively, attitude wise….. If any one player is going to bring the sox down this year look no farther than your good ol’ team captain. Hopefully we can over come.

i like how he’s not backing down. sure, he could have said “it’s just one game” and left it at that. but he went to the hilt and made it clear that nothing would sway him from continuing to skewer his quarry by stating the only way he’d lay off “a little” is if PK goes roughly 35-35 over the next couple weeks.

kenwo, little league all-star.
Swas I was a multiple time all star throughout my little league career. Won 5 championships- 4 in a row- thats more in a row than MJ…Went to high school and was just outstanding for 3 of the 4 years…jr. year being the exception. Didn’t have enough heat to get drafted unfortunately. Played in a highly competitive semi pro league on the south side that sent many players to the Thunderbolts and dominated on the hill for the most part in that league too until I blew out my shoulder last fall. No i never got paid to play but for 20 years I was one of the best area players on the south side. I know my way around the baseball field. I spotted when Linebrink couldn’t pitch in the 9th inning. I know that Konerko makes the white sox a worse team and if you don’t think he does then you are the one who has never played.

let’s break this one down. this is why ken knows more than you about baseball.

which is tough for anyone to claim, i mean, what age range is he talking about? 15-35? 9-29? is the best player on a championship little league team considered a top area talent?

Won more titles in a row than MJ
But didn’t have enough heart to make it to the pros.
So, we can assume had he been truly committed to the game of baseball, he would have won 10 World Series in a row as a player/GM/manager, since he is so astute about everything. He would be the starting pitcher, set-up man, closer, utility man, and everything in between.

Too little, too late
At this point, changing behavior is the only reasonable short term solution along with converting to nuclear and renwable power over time.
Drilling offshore and in ANWAR would not affect supply for years and even then only slightly.

Actually, I wanted to hear what a knee-jerk republican would have to say, so I’ll have to ask around elsewhere, because as crusty as WU is, I don’t think of him as a knee-jerk kind of guy.
BTW, nuclear isn’t a great investment either, considering the amount of time it takes to get plants online and the cost of building said power plants. Using that money to fund renewables, even at their present efficiency levels, would provide more power for the money and prevent us from the nuclear waste dilemma.

Who TF is this? Do I have a twin WU? ;)
I liken it to the ‘70’s – Alaska pipeline was built, and it sure is a nice thing to have today. Drilling is much safer today than 30 years ago. I’d drill ANWR, I’d drill off the coast of FL. Won’t solve the problem entirely, but it’ll help. Lowering the speed limit to 55 (HA!) would also help. Nuclear, though more efficient and (relatively) safe, is too “hot potato” political – too many NIMBY’s, not enough people listening to research. (Seamheads as you are, most can relate to that on this site, I’d bet.)
I happen to think our “Army of One” culture needs to be smacked a bit before we rally ‘round the flag any time soon for any length of time (look at how quickly our solidarity dissipated after 9/11- and don’t give me any war crap, since they can’t effin’ build the building back in NY because of political/$ issues). Thus, we are tilting at windmills for right now, rhythm.

Even McCain says offshore wouldn't be effective
McCain on May 29, 2007 at a townhall in Wisconsin: [W]ith those resources, which would take years to develop, you would only postpone or temporarily relieve our dependency on fossil fuels. We are going to have to go to alternative energy.
The Energy and Information Administration estimates that offshore drilling wouldn’t impact supply until 2030.

Doesn't make a difference where it is sold
Since it is not enough to replace foreign oil, the US would still buy from the world market. The producers would be able to sell at the world price either way.

any idea what offshore daily production would be?
I saw that
World demand for oil is set to increase 37% by 2030, according to the US-based Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) annual report.Demand will hit 118 million barrels per day (bpd) from today’s existing 86 million barrels, driven in large part by transport needs, the EIA said.
would our offshore production be like 10, 20, 30 percent of those 86 million a day?

I couldn't find offshore but for ANWR
Estimates for oil reserves in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge offer a relatively small contribution to the world market. “The total production from ANWR would be between 0.4 and 1.2 percent of total world oil consumption in 2030. Consequently, ANWR oil production is not projected to have a large impact on world oil prices.”[30] In May 2008 the Energy Information Administration stated the following:“The opening of the ANWR 1002 Area to oil and natural gas development is projected to increase domestic crude oil production starting in 2018. In the mean ANWR oil resource case, additional oil production resulting from the opening of ANWR reaches 780,000 barrels per day in 2027 and then declines to 710,000 barrels per day in 2030. In the low and high ANWR oil resource cases, additional oil production resulting from the opening of ANWR peaks in 2028 at 510,000 and 1.45 million barrels per day, respectively. Between 2018 and 2030, cumulative additional oil production is 2.6 billion barrels for the mean oil resource case, while the low and high resource cases project a cumulative additional oil production of 1.9 and 4.3 billion barrels, respectively.” [31]),

Compared with 10 million bpd from Saudi Arabia, this is nothing
and in my opinion, not worth wasting the wildlife reserve over.
And drilling doesn’t even address the problem, it addresses the symptom. Cut back on consumption and develop non-fossil fuel energy / transportation sources, and we don’t have to deal with these issues. Period.

Per a McCain comment in the Washington Post
There is estimated to be around 21 bil barrels of oil in offshore areas. Figuring that is would take years and years to get it out, that isn’t much compared to 118 mil/day. Equivalent of 178 days of oil

Tilting at windmills...not quite
WU, I agree that the “army of one” culture, ie for me and about me for joewho, needs a swift kick in the pants. But even if we take the self-centered nature of the general public into account, I think a lot can be done in order to improve the situation without any additional government regulations. The government moves slowly, why wait for them.
I think if you tell people that they can save money by cutting back and then give them example of simple things that can be done to cut back, we can start to get somewhere now and the government can catch up with the public. This seems to be business as usual, from what I’ve seen in my short life, ie grassroots movement -> public sentiment goes in a certain direction -> government changes to reflect this.
The compact fluorescent light bulb is a nice start, providing that people know that the need to recycle those things at appropriate recycling centers because they contain mercury. Other things are to cut back on water usage, since it takes electricity to pump water. Turn the thermostat down in the winter, up in the summer. There are all sorts of little things we can do that I don’t think are addressed enough that they have gotten through to the general public.
Not so surprising to me is that for the average person, the largest amount of oil is consumed in getting food to your table. More than what is consumed by transportation or heating your house. Eating meat take a lot of resources, and I could get into this in much more depth, but essentially if you cut back on meat, you’re cutting back substantially on your petroleum consumption.
Also, eating organic food does a lot to curb oil consumption since pesticides and fertilizers are usually fossil fuel based molecules. And even better, if you can eat locally produced food as much as possible, you’re doing even better.
Overall, if the public would read the labels of where things are produced and try to make decisions about what consumed the least oil to get to you (ie should I eat this apple from New Zealand or from NY state?), a lot could be done to reduce oil consumption in the states. This also means eating things when they’re in season, instead of being able to consume whatever whenever, but I don’t think that’s too much of a price to pay (and this is where we need to lose the army of one attitude, I realize). And I also realize that this is where you say I’m tilting at windmills, but every little bit does count (and if it doesn’t then why do you vote?) and the more people that make changes the better things become.
I suppose this would be better discussed over a fine beverage, so get your ass out here!

Why use a dimmer switch in the first place?
Mood lighting?
IKEA sells lamps that having a sliding voltage regulator that essentially works as a dimmer switch, as you can adjust the light intensity, and I’m fairly confident that there are LED lighting options that have the same option.
Dimmer switches (the three click variety that you screw a light bulb into) don’t save you any electricity, if that’s what you’re going for. It’s something with the way they are made, but you use exactly the same amount of juice whether the light is on full blast or half blast.
Do as you wish, but options are available.

don’t use significantly more energy to produce.
Also growing your vegatables isn’t necessarily better. Since an individual grower often uses less than ideal land for growing, he/she may require more water and fertilizer (or simply use them less efficicently) to grow his/her crop thus wiping out the energy savings from eliminating transportation of the vegatables.

Agreed that growing your vegetables isn’t necessarily better, but growing them organically and composting your food waste goes a long way towards helping the overall energy predicament and you may learn something useful as well. Planters can give excellent yields and be used year round, depending on where you are located and if you want to bring the box inside in the winter.

Interesting point
Since the auto companies can drastically improve fuel efficiency by cutting the weight of their cars and by putting less powerful engines in cars.
On the first point, plastic body panels can be used instead of steel. On the second point, why do you need 300 hp in a sedan? It’s just for boasting and stop-light drag racing, inefficient in it’s own right.

i think you underestimate how quickly such changes in design and manufacture could be enacted.
first, a company would need to design and test such vehicles. then they would need to build factories or re-fit their current factories to build such cars. we’re talking years here. there’s a reason the american auto companies are up shit creek right now – they bet their future on bigger (read: higher margin) vehicles. now those are not as practical. but, because of the way cars are made, it’s not like they can just magically stop a factory producing F-250s and start having it build focuses.
the market will take care of a lot of this quicker than the manufacturers/government can. people will simply purchase smaller/more fuel efficient cars. and manufacturers will step up to meet that demand. one can already see the shift occurring as the foreign manufacturers, harkening back to twenty or more years ago, are importing more of their vehicles into the US to meet the increased demand that their US factories isn’t meeting.

Wouldn't that suggest
that they can be brought in over night? Just because it’s not Ford and Chrysler that’s profiting from the changes doesn’t mean the industry isn’t capable of bringing in more efficient cars. American company’s are going to be lagging for a while, but the industry as a whole already has more efficient cars available.

Your suggesting they have the ability to import more of their vehicles to meet demand for the vehicles they’ve already been producing that already have better gas mileage, or no?
American car producers will not be able to make more efficient cars over night, yes, but other company’s are already well on their way. I’d consider within 2 – 3 years over night considering the pace at which most American’s buy cars. If 100 million hybrids showed up on dealers lot’s tomorrow they wouldn’t all be purchased anyways. Most Americans are in the process of paying off a car or in the middle of a lease as is, so by the time they get to their next car purchase their will be an option that has a more efficient engine.
Not even necessarily a hybrid, there are plenty of smaller sized cars made by imports that already get great mileage with a standard engine.
I’m not suggesting shifting everything into a hyrbid facility, I would say it will take company’s that didn’t already start making that shift quite a while to catch up, but those company’s (Toyota already, Honda in ‘09, Chevy with their Volt) that did prepare will be able to get enough cars to market that most people will have an option to buy a much more fuel efficient car the next time they go to buy one.

"the ability"
that ability is not a large ability. i was referring almost exclusively to the prius which is not produced here in the US but in china and japan. the foreign automakers are not going to pull product on a large scale out of their other markets. that’s plain stupid. they’ve done it with the prius because demand in the US has exceeded by far what they expected and they’re able to charge a commensurately high premium for that. but they aren’t going to start pulling less, shall we say, exotic cars like the corolla off the lots in japan or korea to meet demand here. they have competitors over there, too, who would love to eat into that market share.

Engine efficiency or overall efficiency?
There are thermodynamic limits to the efficiency of an internal combustion engine and I’d venture to say that the engines in cars today are getting close to that limit.
What needs to be changed is the aerodynamic design, the weight of the car, and the power per unit weight in order to improve efficiency. A SUV is not aerodynamic, extremely heavy, and requires a lot of energy to get it moving. Couple that with the fact that people want to go from 0-60 in 2 seconds with all sorts of parasitic options (heated cup holders anyone?), and you have the makings of a really inefficient vehicle. So if you buy something smaller (station wagon?), more aerodynamic, and that accelerates slower, you have a much more efficient vehicle.
And I would argue that it would be great if all cars were hybrids in a sense that gasoline consumption would go down, the efficiency of the car would increase, and there would be much less air pollution (the original hook of the hybrid vehicle in the first place).

I agree, I was trying to make the point that the solutions are available now
and that they don’t need to invest in developing the materials, etc.
Regarding the safety testing, may materials have already passed the fundamental testing, it’s just the crash tests that need to be done, as you said. And these things do take time, but new models can be put out in 3 years or less, from my understanding. Although not overnight, better products should be able to hit the market in 2-3 years, it you assume that they weren’t being designed until the last year or so.
And I will point out that many models are available with various engine size options. When consumers choose those that actually fit what suits their needs, they will have gone a long way to curb consumption.

not sure what you mean by new models.
if you mean new models of “current” vehicles, such as what toyota is doing for the prius right now for 2009, yes. if you’re talking about a new car, longer than that. it would be both technologically and economically infeasible for a car company, and the industry as a whole, to make a huge shift in the makeup of their vehicle lineups. we’re really talking a seismic shift in automobiles here. the american car companies literally cannot invest right now. so they are largely unable to retrofit, let alone build, new factories. and the foreign manufacturers, while doing much better financially, would be unable to pick up the increased demand from people who would normally be buying SUVs from, say, ford and now want smaller cars but can’t get them from ford. we’re going to see a bit of a misalignment over the next few years in terms of what consumers want and what’s actually available. unfortunately, this will cause many cars, like a corrolla or something, to increase in price because of supply not being able to meet the demand (it’s ironic that american car companies didn’t want to produce small cars because of the low margins – oops!). this will work itself out over the next 3-7 years. but capital investing, which is what such a shift in demand requires, takes time – especially in these economic times, where you’re going to see some or all of the big 3 in bankruptcy by the end of next year.

By new models, I meant the Chevy Volt
I saw it first at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show, and it should be hitting the roads in 2010.
But I see your point, that it takes some time for auto companies to shift their focus. I also agree that they’re up a creek from betting on the wrong horse, so to speak. I would argue that this is an opportunity to support smaller auto companies that are already producing more efficient cars, like Tesla (high budget) or Zenn (low budget) and explore the “trickle up” effects. Admittedly, I’m a big fan of electrics. For years the big 3 have ignored a siognificant sector of the public that wanted more efficient cars, so F them (although I realize it isn’t that simple).
I hope that we can see more efficient models soon and with a minimal net loss of jobs.

oh, yes. the investment in the "alternatives" to the big three has certainly picked up.
and the auto suppliers are increasingly interested in dealing with them (read: better price terms) because they provide additional diversity to their customer list. and, of course, likely won’t be filing for bankruptcy. at least not until a few years after chrysler et al do.
that’s another point that’s worth mentioning here. it’s not just the big three we’re talking about these days. it’s the suppliers, too. many of whom are currently under bankruptcy protection (delphi), just got out (dana, federal mogul, dura), or are liquidating in bankruptcy (progressive moulding). think these guys have the spare cash to be creating innovative new products for their customers or expanding production capacity or retrofitting to meet changes in demand? ha.

seats are the same. steering wheels, seatbelts, etc. the guts of the car are different to one degree or another, of course, but lots of it is the same/similar and is produced by the same suppliers who supply the big companies.

It's not like the technology isn't there.
They don’t have to do anything over night, Hybrid’s are already around. The fact that a lot of people can’t afford to just buy a new car on a whim b/c they want better gas mileage is a different problem, but car company’s can improve gas mileage and have.
Really though, It’s not even so much the car company’s problem as it is was the consumers. If they had demanded more gas mileage the last 15 years these cars would have been on the market sooner.
Americans kept demanding more space and more horse power. That obviously has changed as the industry has basically stopped selling SUV’s over the last couple quarters.
More efficient cars are a much more realistic option than off shore drilling, even a lower class family will buy a new car before any of those drills get in the ground.

how many hybrids can be made right now?
technology isn’t the issue. it’s production capacity. this isn’t a paint factory or something where you can go from blue paint to red paint overnight if you want to. car factories are very specialized. don’t you think toyota would love to be able to meet the demand for priuses right now instead of having waiting lists? but, instead, just when these cars are really taking off they’re having to take production lower because they’re re-fitting their prius factories to make the new (better and more fuel efficient) prius.

Are you suggesting only the Prius & other hybrids that have started to go to markets along with cars like the Volt..
or just more efficient cars in general.
Things like a 4 cylinder SUV (Vue, Santa Fe, Hyrbid Escape, etc.. ) vs. a Hummer
The average car mileage could still be doubled without everyone buying a hybrid if they just purchased the smaller more efficient cars that are already available.

i'm curious.
do you think there are a whole bunch of these smaller/more efficient cars that are already available sitting on dealer lots that are simply not being purchased? or that increased production of these cars could occur quickly? like i’ve said before, car factories (and the factories of the suppliers who supply the car manufacturers) are not paint factories. shifting production requires both lots of time and lots of money. to suggest that ford can just decide tomorrow to stop producing as many F-150s and start producing more focuses is naive and blithely ignores the business realities of the auto industry.
it would cost ford about $300M to idle production at just one SUV/truck plant (to wit, they have these nasty little things called union contracts which have these nasty requirements that ford isn’t allowed to do nasty things like just fire everyone in a factory – even if they idle a plant, the employees still get paid. yay union!), retrofit that plant to produce smaller/different vehicles, retrain the employees, get the quality control up to sufficient levels, and start actually producing the new vehicles for customers. total time, optimistically, is probably nine months. multiply that by about ten factories for each of the big three. also consider for a moment whether the companies who actually do the building and retrofitting of these factories would be able to handle the sudden demand for the services in such a timeframe as well. it’s not like there are dozens of companies with legions of experienced employees who can do this work just waiting to get at it. this sort of stuff usually occurs at a pace of a factory or two a year with some smaller scale work at other factories.
this should provide some insight – though their numbers are amusingly understated:

For an around town car, doesn't seem so bad
I think the masses need to shift their buying requirements.
Another thing that I haven’t often heard is why people don’t have an efficient car and rent a minivan or pickup truck when taking a vacation or hauling necessary goods. I offer that suggestion with the caveat that I’m talking about people going on vacation once a year and hauling things less than 10 times a year. You know, most people in the US.

Somewhat on-topic...
While in France we visited a Smart car factory in Hambach where most of the cars looked like this:

For a good amount of the tour I was thinking about how difficult a sell those would be in America… I feel kind of guilty, too, because I’m as much a part of this ‘lazy’ culture as anyone—take, for example, driving a car to a fast-food place that’s less than two miles from my house.
Maybe this is overly paranoid, but I’m developing an extreme uneasiness about where this country will be heading during my lifetime.

When we have to run the hills in Clermont (at the Triatholon Nat’l Training Center, which is the highest point in Cent’l FL – 280 ft. above sea level!) like we will this weekend, and we have to drive 1/2 hour, he filches a ride with me in my SUV. Smart cars are neat, like a Vespa with a roof, but even Samrt car owners will tell you they’d rather have some comfort over a longer drive.

Good point, WU, but I think you may be missing something
Small cars like a smart car are meant for around town, and not for driving long freeway distances. Most people travel less than 40 miles total in a day, so a small car makes a lot of sense for those applications.
If a family has 2 cars, and assuming that they both parents don’t drive more than 40 miles to and from work, it makes sense to have a small, around town car and then another car for longer trips. In my ideal case scenario, you would have an electric for around town and a hybrid (prius, escape, or what have you) for the longer tips. It’s just that people expect seem to buy two cars that they can fit all of the crap from their house inside of with the capability of off-roading from Florida to Alaska. Completely impractical.
If people switched their purchasing habits to their needs, curbing consumption would follow and help ween ourselves off foreign oil.

And if they drive short distances how much
are they really impacted by prices? I drive 20+ miles one way and it definitely makes a difference. And folks used to like to joy-ride around on the weekends, or have a driving “destination” vacation. And if you’ve driven in Orlando (the “least friendly driving town in the country” according to some magazine) you know you need 3 things: acceleration, responsive sterring, and mass (to avoid getting crumpled by Grandpa/lost tourists/macho young male white/Latin/black speed freaks/Asians). So the Smart doesn’t exactly give one a feeling of comfort, especially since it will be awhile before Sequoias/Yukons/Expeditions/Escalades, et’. al will be traded in for itty-bitty 45 mpg bite-sized vehicles.
And can a family afford a “specialty” car in addition to the other two most 2-parent families need (to say nothing of having a teenager)? Insurance is a mutha (I hate insurance).
What’s a ween? Is it what I think it is? And why can’t I keep mine? ;)
PS I agree we ought to downsize. Not, not gonna happen unless prices keep going up.

Intersting WU, you're echoing the "army of one" sentiment you said needs to change, though I understand why
Change starts with the first person. If you take your SUV off the road, that’s one less that every other small car driver needs to deal with. Change often comes slowly, but slow is better than no.
I think you are misunderstanding my argument. I think that you have 2 cars total for a family. One around town car (smart car, electric sedan, or an electric minivan) the other car for longer trips. I said nothing of a teenager, because I think we need to get out of the idea of 1 car per family member. I’m happy that a lot of people have been rich enough lately to afford a third car for their kids, but economically that’s becoming more of an impossibility. The market will correct, will it not? If it costs too much, why keep doing it?
Most of us never had a car in high school and we did fine. It’s called a bicycle or borrowing the p’s car when necessary.
I imagine that insurance on a smaller, cheaper, and slower car will be lower than the status quo.
Besides, what better way to make sure your kids aren’t going behind your back and driving to New York than making sure they can only drive 120 miles before having to charge for 4-6 hours. ;-)
I agree that price increases will push more people to downsize, but I also want to believe that as more people realize the impact of their actions, they will seek to change them. Just the optimist in me.

Improving mileage standards in a fine idea
But that doesn’t do anything for all the vehicles currently on the road. Since the economy is doing so poor, fewer people are going to be buying new cars so better mileage standards would take a while to take effect.
AC (I meant home AC, not car AC) takes a lot of electricity. When electricity prices goes up, people cut back. Same goes for gas prices. High energy and gas prices incentivize people to do the same things that increases standards do.

My basic point is
High energy costs incentivize improved energy efficiency. People and businesses do what is economically attractive. Right now that means being energy efficient. Mandates on top of that wouldn’t have much of an impact.
Though one area in which it would would be AC efficiency standards. Since often times the person buying the AC unit (i.e. landlord) isn’t the one paying the bill (i.e. renters), people buy the unit with the cheapest up front cost (the inefficient models).

This is where the "Army of One" crap needs to stop
yes you should drive less, and there are economic reasons to do so. But the “you can’t tell me what to do” attitude is bullshit and people are naive if they think they can keep living the extravagant lives they now feel entitled to.
It seems to be the “ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” argument to me. If we consume less, we give ourselves a longer “runway” with which to change our infrastructure and feel less of a jolt when oil prices double from what they are now. Invest now, or pay (at least) quadruple later.

I don't know - I'm a headline guy
Don’t personalize it if it’s meant in fun, which is was, and is. You were doing it daily 7/10-13, andthen stopped. I gave you crap, like we do on this board (bored?). I’m sure no one expected you to do it every day, because kenwo is hellbound for jail, an institution, or the morgue in short order, like Travis Bickle, and will IMO, soon be unavailable for comment. (Even if you had set a precedent, which was much appreciated.)

Wife back in town
What’s the weather like in Napa in December? She doesn’t want to come out there until we finish the marathon Thanksgiving weekend. I get it – FOCUS, unrelenting, until mission accomplished.

We’ll look at either Jan/Feb or this comng October, perhaps. Wife wants to run our scheduled marathon Thanksgiving, I wouldn’t mind going earlier. I probably lose the discussion.

I'll also add that I've liked the discussion of smart cars and oil drilling on this thread, even if this may not be the best forum - stealing kenwo's thunder and all

Marie…you are right. I don’t appreciate that. I am 10 times smarter baseball wise than he is. Anyway….why does everyone think I am anti Sox now? I have been saying that since probably christmas time (maybe a little later) I think they will win the division. That hasn’t changed. Just think they would be better off without Konerko.
Our White Sox guys didn’t do anything tonight! I expected Carlos to win the game multiple times. Thank goodness Young’s fly was deep enough to score Morneau…I didn’t want Carlos looking even worse. Home field in the series for the AL…thats always good. Now I am going to be extremely board the next 2 nights. No white sox, no wrestling, no chef ramsey…maybe I will go see Motley Crue tomorrow nite!

Brillant Comment
If I read that sentence in a book, I would have thought it was a really hacky way of illustrating that the character is a meat head/ white trash. Knowing that an actual person wrote that about themselves makes me laugh/cringe/pray for his children.

If this guy didn’t say he already say he’s over the age of 20 and played in a non-paying pro league, I’d have assumed he’s 12.
This is way late.. going to back one of his old posts, but what is the definition of a semi-pro league?
