Gavin Floyd: Good?!
Since June 1st, Gavin has been completely en fuego. To wit: 3.22 ERA, 8.2 K/9, 2.6 BB/9, 3.15 K/BB, 1.6 HR/9. Basically, it's a case of Brainswitch. Javy has become Gavin and Gavin has become Javy. See here. So...what do we think of this development? Do we think Gavin can keep it up? Can he shut down real teams with real bats in the lineup for an extended period of time? Or is this all a ruse? Outside of that month to end the season, he's basically never done anything like this before. Let's do a poll!

i voted too many k's.
he’s got 2 starts in this stretch with really high k totals, 10 and 9. aside from those 2 starts, his highest is 7, which he did one time. he had 2 strikeouts in the outing prior to his 10 k performance. i think he will probably settle into about 6.0 k/9, maybe slightly more.
i’m no pollster, but it looks like 100% of voters agree with me thus far, so i think that pretty much makes my opinion fact.
fuck you, that's my name!! you know why, mister? 'cause you drove a hyundai to get here tonight, I drove a eighty thousand dollar bmw. that's my name!!

I noticed the last few starts Gavin has shook off AJ/Toby in several situations
Maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention before, but it seemed like up until that point whatever sign came from the catcher or the dugout was Floyd’s only option

Check out his stats
I believe he has allowed the fewest hits of any starter in our rotation, including Danks. Thats pretty damn indicative of how good this kid can be.

hit rate has a lot of factors going into it
but it is at least somewhat indicative, i’ll grant you. whatever the case, the guy’s line drive rate is going to pick up eventually.

true
But if he can keep the hits down, and continue to spot his curve, he is going to have lots of success. That curveball is deadly.

I'm a little worried...but only a little
His WHIP doesn’t seem sustainable. And Gavin seems to have trouble out of the stretch, so it’s possible that when he does allow more runners the effect will sort of cascade and his runs allowed will shoot up precipitously.
I do think that ERA is going to rise over the year—more runners and more HRs seem inevitable given his career numbers. But, even if his ERA gets up to the 4.5 or 4.7 range, that’s acceptable in my world from a league minimum starter. He’d be like an inexpensive Jon Garland (ERA-wise, not stuff-wise). And I think he can do that.
So, I don’t think his current success level is sustainable. But I do think that he’s very likely to be a good pitcher this year and next.
Announcer: [A fan] from Frederick, Maryland, wants to know why you don't go out and get some more team speed.
Weaver: Team speed, for Chrissake, you get BLEEP god damn little fleas on the bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big BLEEP who can hit the BLEEP ball out of the BLEEP ballpark and you can't make any god damn mistakes.

more gavin freud references coming?
Good luck keeping that BABIP at .226, and when it inevitably rises, so too will the curtain on what artificially appears to be Floyd’s breakout year.
