When Janks comes back ...
who goes -- Adam Russell or D.J. Carrasco?
The Sox's staff has a pleasantly difficult decision because either rookie Adam Russell or D.J. Carrasco, who saved the bullpen with 51/3 innings in his only game Friday, could be taken off the roster to make room for closer Bobby Jenks when he comes off the disabled list.
"No matter who we send down, who we trade or release, obviously it will hurt," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Unfortunately, that's a tough part of the job, but I'm satisfied what Carrasco and [Russell] did."
For the Sox to keep him in the organization, Carrasco would have to clear waivers if taken off the 25-man roster. Russell hurt his chances by getting tagged for two runs on three hits in one-plus inning Sunday.
Russell can be optioned to AAA. Carrasco would have to clear waivers. But regardless of this factor, who would you choose to keep?
I think I would have to go with Carrasco since he can pitch multiple innings and it looks like the Sox will need it with Contreras falling apart. Also, I pick Carrasco because Larry likes him. And that 5.1 inning performance against the Rangers was pretty sweet.

and DFA Uribe too. Fuck all these loosers who only go 3-3 on the road after 7-3 at home.
bunch of fucking loosers, so what if they didn’t half a closer lately. they suck, and happy is 4 days without them.

Carrasco will probably stay, since they'd lose him otherwise
but the Sox might try to trade him.
I’d like to keep Russell on the roster so that he’s getting on the job training for a more high-leverage role next year.

you can be the sox are shopping him right now.
as far as i’m concerned, it’s probably a toss-up between the two as to who would actually help the club the most. and that help is negligible, at best, considering their location in the bullpen pecking order. but if you can get something for carrasco, even if it is a spare A ball part, i’d do that instead. i’m just not sure a team is going to bite based upon this guy’s track record, both recent and not so.
but since i’ve been all over carrasco ever since ST, i’d like to see him stick around and succeed for the sox for a bit. who knows, a couple more good appearances after the break and maybe you can get a spare AA ball part.

The best option for the sox
may be to send Russel down, and let Carrasco get some more work in the majors up until the deadline. Someone will bite by then.
And I agree that the difference is negligible, so who cares if Russell spends a couple weeks on the farm.

I’d stick with DJ Tabasco for now. If he Fails Russel’s still there in AAA.

Hey people - Been traveling for a week
Id vote for D.J. at this point, only because that was unbelievable vs Texas. With the Jose fiasco and assuming he has given what he can…. What options do the Sox have for the 2nd half? Im sure you guys have discussed this at length some point the last few days….

why not send both of them down
put Jose in the bullpen as the long man, then bring up Lance to take over his spot in the rotation?
it’s not like Jose is just going to wake up and not fall apart his next start, if history is any guide.

Maybe Kenny IS looking to replace both of them...
Kenny interested in Orioles’ Daniel Cabrera?
I know Kenny has been interested in Cabrera in the past and he usually gets his man. Kenny must think that Cooper can give Cabrera the Thornton treatment to get his control back on track and turn him into a stud starter. Would be a nice move with the way Contreras is falling apart, with Floyd likely soon after him.

Possibly because you think he “wanks” or something?

This is convenient
SSH, the O’s have done well with him so far this year. He’s throwing literally 85% fastballs and the rest sliders, but his fastball is so good that he hasn’t been hit that hard. I think this would make a really nice acquisition. The problem is that we already know we aren’t getting him because it made it to a paper. I do think Kenny is going to do something but what I don’t know.

I would love it...
Cabrera is nasty as hell… he just needs to find some control. Maybe Cooper could help him with that. Kenny has been rumored to want to acquire Cabrera in the past. He usually lands his targets, just a year or two later (i.e. Linebrink and Dotel).
What would Cabrera cost? Would some combination of Broadway, Russell, Uribe and Richar get it done?

Uribe would definitely be a part of it
Let’s see…well he was a super two, so this is his second year of arbitration which works out in our favor. He probably wouldn’t be that expensive in free agency, but there are certainly suitors with pitching coaches who like his stuff. Getting him in a trade would be pretty ideal, since it would give us an early run at signing him. He’s the kind of guy I wouldn’t worry about making a long term deal with because he’s so big and strong. The key is getting the most out of his age 28 and 29 years, which is the time by which (supposedly) your fastball maxes out. If you can teach him to pitch in those two years, you’ve got a nice part. If he’s still all fastball, he’s probably a bullpen part at that point.
So what for him? Tough call. Not a lot of comparable trades. Can you think of any?

As much as Floyd may bust soon...
I would rather trade a collection of minor league starters in the deal for Cabrera—Broadway, Egbert, etc. Although, I doubt that would be enough. Floyd has had some success in the majors, even if it may be due to defense, but I would like to see if he can keep it up and at least be an average starter in the majors.

Floyd makes a very attractive trading target imo
but I’d rather it be done after the year’s over. If we’re in the playoffs, it’s going to be Buehrle-Danks-Javy and…??? Do you really want it to be Floyd or Contreras?

From the Chicago Tribune on June 29, 2008...
The Sox had internal discussions but decided for now against trying to re-sign veteran pitcher Freddy Garcia, who is rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Garcia, who is expected to audition in front of scouts in four weeks, has drawn strong interest from the Yankees, Mets and Tigers.
I would definitely rather see a trade for Cabrera but the Sox are probably looking to add another starter / swing-man with how awful Contreras is looking lately.

actually, if we're using history as a guide, it may well be like that.
at any rate, too early to give up on jose, especially when your option is lance broadway. the last month hasn’t been pretty but it’s just that – a month. i don’t have a great deal of confidence in jose putting up a 3.00 like he did over the first couple months but i’m not going to give up on him being effective just yet. he’s not going to pitch again until, what, next tuesday? i’d like to see how he reacts to some additional time off. but two more poor starts and i’d be making that, or a similar, move.

History as a guide
In 2006, the Sox had numerous (2 or 3?) starters just absolutely sucking in the second half. Buehrle and Contreras in particular. The Sox had McCarthy in the pen, but refused to make a switch (deference to veterans?). If 2006 is our guide, the Sox will sink or swim with Contreras.
Of course, last season, JC did get relegated to the pen. So it’s possible his leash is shorter now, and I’m sure his reaction to Pablo’s DFA did not endear him to the Sox.
Based on all that, I think you are right that if Conrtreras blows in his next 2 starts, the Sox will make a move. The only problem is that they have all of 2 things to trade (Poreda and Fields) and it would take both, if not more, to get Cabrera or Burnett. I doubt Egbert or Richard can do better than Jose right now. My guess is that Masset will get moved into the rotation, for lack of any better option…
Announcer: [A fan] from Frederick, Maryland, wants to know why you don't go out and get some more team speed.
Weaver: Team speed, for Chrissake, you get BLEEP god damn little fleas on the bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big BLEEP who can hit the BLEEP ball out of the BLEEP ballpark and you can't make any god damn mistakes.

Is Cabrera's trade value really that high?
He is the average pitching coach’s worst nightmare—million dollar arm with no control who just can’t seem to put it all together. But he would also be a dream arm to Cooper. Cabrera hasn’t really pitched very well with the Orioles over the years but he is isn’t a free agent until after the 2010 season.

He's got a great fastball, isn't a FA till 2011 and the Orioles don't have to make a deal
His value is whatever the O’s say it is and they have no reason to say it’s low. Plus, the Sox have 2 prospects in their system period. So there’s not a lot of negotiating room on the Sox part—they can’t just say “How about Broadway and Richard and Shelby?” because the answer will be no. The O’s, IMO, will demand actual prospects.
Sure, it’s supposition on my part, but I don’t see Cabrera getting moved for less then Fields and Poreda. Thinking about it, Burnett, actually, they might be able to get for less given that he’ll opt out of his contract. But less still means Fields.

Owens doesn't get it done in any trade...
and the Orioles outfield looks pretty good with Luke Scott, Adam Jones, and Nick Markakis.

Closer Bobby Jenks is on track to come off the disabled list on Friday when the White Sox start the second half of the season.Manager Ozzie Guillen has been impressed by Adam Russell and D.J. Carrasco, but one of the relievers will have to go when Jenks returns.
“It’s a good scenario,” Guillen said. “I like the way Carrasco throws. Russell has been put in a tough situation and he did the job both times.”
