Doesn't look like Cheat wants to recap yesterday's softball game and I definitely do not, so until such a time as a real post gets made, do all your bitching and moaning in the space provided. Link dump to your heart's content. Hopefully I actually mainpage a few of them this time.

The OG (that's Original Ghandhi yo) getting some good ink in the liberal newspaper
Why has Manuel been successful so far? Perhaps a manager has to be fired once in order to become truly effective."Once you get fired — in that time in between jobs — you look at yourself, you check yourself out," Manuel said. "You have to look yourself in the mirror all the time and ask, ‘What did I do wrong?’ You can’t blame others; that’s the first part of the healing process — lashing out at others. After a while you come back and say, ‘Let me check Jerry Manuel out and see where he went wrong.’ I thought that was one of the areas I needed to correct."
Manuel also learned the lesson of self-preservation from his Chicago experience. Namely, managers should not unnecessarily put their fate in the hands of players, "no matter who they are," he said.

Even if the turnaround can’t be attributed to him (at least I don’t think so), its nice to see the Mets do well so far under his watch.

Manuel has had some crazy quotes
He compared the booing fans to “manure” and said he was going “to cut Jose Reyes” cause he’s “gangsta like that”.
I don’t know if the turnaround can be attributed to his managing but the Mets finally playing as well as everyone thought they would in a weak NL.
maybe he's taking a page from ozzie
but rated g style. like i said, i don’t think the turnaround is attributed to him, but like you say, they’re playing to their abilities

How'd he get stuck with that job, one wonders.

Just gotta say
that game was damn near impossible to watch. I don’t think I’ve ever been that bored or angry during a game where the Sox have exploded offensively
-Jeeves Life in the Cell
Yep, brutal. I kept telling Mrs. Chi how much I hated watching, but I couldn't stop.
Talk about Chinese water torture…
Ozzie was right on with his rant after this one.
When she farts, a little rainbow comes out...
haha too true
I kept telling my brother that I would quite watching by the end of the half inning, but next thing I know it’s four hours and one giant cock tease later

OT - on the economy, fish
because colintj invited me to link dump and I didn’t watch the game yesterday, I will provide the following analysis of the economic troubles the US is now having.
Another useful link is the better choices seafood guide, letting you know which fish and crustaceans are better choices in an attempt to prevent a complete and total collapse of our oceans’ fish stocks. A pull-down menu lets you narrow down the list by regions.
Do you know if they account for mercury content?
I don’t see any mention at all about mercury contamination.

On the pocket seafood guide, they do star choices with high mercury content
and also give this website, said to be regarding mercury and other contaminants, but I found a link to this on the page the previous link redirects to.
Lots of it.
The lofty rhetoric, the conspiratorial tone, the glee at the US’ economic troubles, etc
I particularly liked this choice quote
We are witnessing the birth pangs of a new, more equal world economic order with the particularly notable rise of Asia (but not just Asia) and with Russia as its most likely midwife.

Gotcha
I focused more on the start of the article, talking about how the large amount of debt, brought on largely by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, has handicapped our economy and how, in an election year, it’s political suicide to talk about cutting back.
Our next president will have quite the nice little mess to clean up. Not impossible, mind you.
but perhaps unpossible?

IIRC
Our debt-to-GDP ratio is not out of line with historical averages. And our defense spending-to-GDP ratio is actually well below historical averages. 70% of the current US budget is entitlement spending (ie Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid). That’s the part of the budget that really needs to go on a diet, but realistically, that is not going to happen.
by reardenmettle on Jul 14, 2008 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions
Historical Averages?
I’m going to look at the numbers in a minute, but I suppose the historical debt to GDP ratio depends, and whether it is healthy, depends on what your historical end points are.
Also, I’m not sure I’d put too much faith in the numbers you get for defense spending to GDP ratio since 2003, because the Iraq war is not funded under normal department of defense spending. It’s funded with specially allocated funds so that it isn’t subject to the normal passing of the budget political show downs and therefore probably doesn’t fall into the budget pie chart you were probably looking at. I can’t remember if the war in Afghanistan is funded the same way.
And yes, the bureaucracy of gov’t programs should be reigned in across the board.
Ultimately the point is that we're all going to have our taxes increased.
by reardenmettle on Jul 14, 2008 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes, our taxes will have to increase
in order to pay for the rampant overspending of the last 28 years (with those Clinton / Republican Congress balanced budget years excluded). Wars, tax breaks for the rich, inefficient social programs, nepotism, cronyism, and all the other wonderful things about fiscally irresponsible and, recently, completely incompetent management.
But hey, vote republican because they’re the fiscally responsible ones!
I would venture to say it’s better to have our taxes raised moderately now as opposed to having them raised drastically in 20 years to pay for all of this crap.
I still haven’t looked up the budget numbers yet, as I have been busy with work.
I actually didn't look anything up - I was just going by what I remembered from macroeconomics.
It could have been 50% entitlements, 20% defense, 30% non-defense discretionary. In fact, that sounds more reasonable.

OT glorious news
Billy Packer is not coming back to CBS!!!!!!
I’m not crazy about college basketball, but I hate watching the tournament when the best announcers are cut off after the 2nd round, and we have to listen to Packer’s shitboxing all game long.

Spare me your drivel about how college is more exciting
If I’m desperate to watch low scoring games where the offense revolves around passing the ball for 30 seconds then hoisting up a bad shot, followed by announcers saying everyone is trying really hard, I will gladly watch the Bulls thank you very much.

Coming to Sunday's game vs Detroit....
My son and I are coming to the game this Sunday vs. Detroit. My son was Justin Verlander’s roomate, catcher and Old Dominion captain. We are going to watch Justin pitch against the Orioles and of course to watch the Orioles. Having never stayed in Baltimore I would like a little advise on a reasonble place to stay Saturday night fairly close to the stadium and some points of interest in Baltimore Harbour to visit. We will probably be grabbing dinner with Verlander but want to see the sights Saturday afternoon. Any ideas… and of course good luck Sunday.
epic fial.

I live in Baltimore and played against Justin and your son while at Towson (we went 2-1 vs. Verlander in my career, probably not too many can say that). Im not sure you can get a reasonable place down by the harbor, but try areas like Catonsville, Mt. Vernon, and Canton for cheaper hotels that are pretty close to Camden Yards (esp. if you are driving). I wouldnt eat down at the harbor bc the restaurants are all chains, I’d check out Federal Hill and the Canton Square (Claddagh’s) for some good restaurants and bars saturday night. Hope this helps, have fun.
Ozzieball12... Thanks for the great info
Thank you very much for the great info. I remember those games vs Towson.. always a challenge.
