BP Sox Transaction Analysis
In-Game Tactical Fun: While there's something of a tom-tom beat to get Juan Uribe into somebody else's uniform, I like the way keeping him works out in terms of being a roster space-saver with in-game tactical utility. Uribe is sort of a platoon option to Alexei Ramirez at second, but he is also Orlando Cabrera's backup at short, which allows Ozzie some tactical flexibility at two lineup slots. (He had even more flexibility when the team had Pablo Ozuna around, but the decision to keep Wise and a 12th pitcher after Konerko came off of the DL got Ozuna designated for assignment.
In-System Solutions: If Alexei Ramirez's bat goes slack, the Sox have options at this one position down at Charlotte: Chris Getz (.303/.361/.452, which translates to a peak in the .270s in EqA) and Danny Richar (bouncing back from a slow start and hitting a tasty .280/.364/.488 against RHPs). In case Loaiza isn't the answer and one of the rotation regulars goes down, it's going to be a bit tough, because it isn't like the most experienced guys are doing all that well in Charlotte—Tomo Ohka's been tateriffic with 19 allowed in 92 2/3 (yes, one-nine with a -teen at the end), Lance Broadway's not a great answer, and Jack Egbert's had a rough time of it before his current 14-inning scoreless streak. As a result, it might be a matter of Clayton Richard or nobody. Richard's interesting on a couple of levels—he was briefly quarterbacking at Michigan before focusing on baseball, but it's much more germane that he's a big-bodied lefty with a nifty sinker. He's also in his first season above High-A, having pitching his way through the Southern League in two months, but he's rattled off six straight quality starts in his first work at Triple-A since earning the promotion. Given how desperately bare the cupboard looked in February, it's actually sort of a happy surprise that the Sox have even this many options.

You have a point there
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
The way I figure it
Thome will be retired/old and sucky as will Jose.
Konerko will be old as well.
Dye, AJ and Buherle will either be gone or old.
Who know what Javier will look like.
With not much coming up in the Minors to replace those guys, Kenny with have to rock the free agent market, but that is tough since so many of those guys are over priced.
if we're talking 3-4 years.
the situation is not necessarily that bleak. the sox have, in my opinion, one of the better low minors around. whether they pan out or not is another question but i’d be relatively optimistic. quentin, swisher, fields, danks, ramirez, etc. isn’t a horrible core to build around. what is more problematic is the immediate help in the upper minors.
consider that the current sox team has five players left from the 2004 team. and the replacements from the sox’ own minor league system currently sits at two, both of whom are, ahem, role players. there are ways and KW seems to have a knack for finding them.
And the Twins have the advantage of being a better team than the Sox. - hitlesswonder
But of those replacements
How many were acquired by trading prospects? If the Sox don’t have any high value prospects left to trade how are they going to plug holes for 2011/12?
Off the top of my head,
Weren’t Swisher, Danks, Javier, Q and Masset acquire with prospects? Do the Sox have the equivalent of Gio, McCarthy, Chris Young and Chris whatshisname available to trade for the next round of replacements?
note the draft position and prospect status of mccarthy, young, and carter when they entered the sox system.
the answer to your question is wait and see. the problem, as i stated, was the immediate replacements/trade chips.
And the Twins have the advantage of being a better team than the Sox. - hitlesswonder
This is your prediction for the next 3-4 years or next year?

Why would it be tough 3 years from now?
How many of these old guys that you are worried about will be around?
Jose, Dye, AJ, Thome, these big contracts aren’t going to be here in 3 years. I don’t know what your worried about.
He’ll have money unless Danks, Q, Swisher, Floyd, Jenks, Alexei, Fields demand monster contracts in three years.. and if they are that means we have some pretty damn good players anyways.

Ha, I wasn’t saying Fields would be great, just saying.. if he didn’t have any money 4 years from now, he probably put up some monster numbers the next three years.
And yes Alexei is a four year deal.. but he said 3-4 years from now, so it would have made sense, just poor quoting on my part.

You're OK - just messing with you
Point taken – old, onerous contracts will be gone, just in time for new, onerous contracts.
CWS: Slashing negative expectations since May, 2008.
But there is a leap of faith
that having money available will result in replacing them with quality players. There is always the chance of getting stuck with a Richie Sexson or the like.
I suppose the counter argument is that prospects and trades require a similar leap of faith
When was the last big contract we had to swallow?
(Ducks and covers.)
CWS: Slashing negative expectations since May, 2008.
Might have to swallow some of Konerko's
But no this isnt really a big concern of mine regarding the Sox. This whole line of thinking to me just doesnt fit with the current Sox franchise. They have money, they spend money. They need a better farm system and have taken some positive steps but “we” are not the Oakland A’s or Minnesota Twins. Kenny has managed to bring in some young, good talent when many thought that was never going to happen and the team wouldnt compete for the next 5 years. Wrong.

ugh. Bad mental picture.
A half season is enough so far to tell SSS to fuck off. lol.

I thought about it
KW has yet to make a big bust signing yet (knock on wood). Dye came pretty cheap because of injuries. AJ was fairly priced. Linebrink seems to be the same so far. I have to commend KW on not making the impulse, best-available-player $10 mil signing mistake (i.e. Hunter, Torii).

Ozuna officially becomes a free agent
Infielder Pablo Ozuna was released Wednesday by the White Sox after he cleared waivers and rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A Charlotte.http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2008/07/ozuna-officiall.htmlOzuna was designated for assignment last week. RE: transaction analysis
thanks for the post, fuck the other whining bitches ;-)
in the context of this year, it appears that the biggest vulnerability the sox have is lack of depth in starting pitching within the system (AAA), where we can’t easily replace a starter if one of them should go down. no? perhaps i’m more optimistic about 1B which the authors defines as the gaping hole.

The Sox really don't have a gaping hole right now
I think she meant more from the standpoint of if Konerko is run out there everyday and doesn’t hit. But yeah Swish could obviously move there.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
if 1B isn't the gaping hole, i don't know what is.
if you fill that hole with swisher, you open another gaping hole. PK needs to fill the hole himself.
i’m relatively fine with the options at “6th starter.” we can wax on about it but the sox are in a far better position than most teams, who are more often wondering about their 5th or even 4th starter.
And the Twins have the advantage of being a better team than the Sox. - hitlesswonder
Im not in love with it
But I dont know if I consider BA/Wise a gaping hole in CF. Of course that would mean the rest of the team is hitting. The team has come a long way from worrying about the poor production from the middle in general.
The SSS motto should be the answer to "What is our deepest fear?". Or maybe just Prozac.
you'd get basically the same production between the two, er, three of them right now.
if PK’s production is a gaping hole, so would BAwise’s. simply because the sox would be shifting things around to make it seem more normal by instead getting below average offense from center and above average offense at first doesn’t change the overall picture.
And the Twins have the advantage of being a better team than the Sox. - hitlesswonder
I know you are discussing offense, but in this market, it''s not what you make,
it’s what you keep. Might we not save more runs with better D and less O than less D and slightly less O?
CWS: Slashing negative expectations since May, 2008.
no, i'm not talking just offense.
And the Twins have the advantage of being a better team than the Sox. - hitlesswonder
I looked again at the previous post(s)
I see “hitting” and “offense” mentioned freauently. No “defense”. What are your thoughts, net/net offense/defense?
CWS: Slashing negative expectations since May, 2008.
i would hope you wouldn't think me so stupid as to be suggesting that BAwise is equal to PK in offensive production.
unless you’ve been drinking the anti konerko kool aid. then you’re the stupid one.
Well, no.
Not over the long run. But in the immediate, when you’re hot, you’re hot. And PK is not (and BAWise was). A relatively intelligent fellow postulated you run a streak into the ground, or words to that effect.
And as usual I enjoy how you get in the “I never called you stupid, stupid” phrase in. Deft.
CWS: Slashing negative expectations since May, 2008.
right. aren't we talking from here to the end of the season? i don't know many streaks that don't get run into the ground long before then.
just like i don’t know many slumps that last until then.
I mean you are telling me
Twins are a tad bit nervous about Livan’s 2nd half? Their starting pitching will eventually even out to where it should be, 4.50+ staff era.

well, sort of.
but i’m not sure i’m going to make a straight comparison between a guy who mops up with a primary set up man. this is more about leverage. it’s not like the twins bullpen has stunk or something or they’re losing games in the 7th/8th because the guys who actually are directly filling in for neshek are blowing up. their bullpen has been fine, like always. the moving up theory is nice but i think it’s effect here is pretty small.
liriano is unable to put enough torque
on his elbow to throw his most effective pitch, his slider. He will be ineffective.

I think its fair to assume he’s not dominating on the MLB level this year. However, he does represent an upgrade over the old one.

is this kid your nephew or something? I don’t know what rock you have been living under, but when you have structural damage to your elbow bad enough to require Tommy John’s surgery it would be foolish to throw a pitch which would damage your arm further. Liriano can be effective as MAINLY a 2 pitch pitcher but I do not see him throwing nearly as many sliders as he did in 06’. How many pitchers survive throwing 2 pitches?

What difference does it make,
when you obviously don’t know what you are arguing about? I didn’t say he was going to completely stop throwing sliders, I never even said his slider would not be effective! What I said was is he will not throw as many sliders as he did when he was awesome. When someone can prove to me otherwise that the percentage of sliders he throws in a game is at the same rate it was in 06, then’ I will believe he can be great again.

first, what you say varies wildly.
on the one hand, you say "liriano is UNABLE to put enough torque
on his elbow to throw his most effective pitch, his slider” and that it would be “foolish” for him to throw it because it will damage his arm further. then you throw in things about not throwing as many sliders.
regardless, isn’t your real point that he won’t be effective because he can only throw two pitches now, the slider not being one of them? if so, he doesn’t need to throw as many sliders as he did in ‘06 to be a three-pitch pitcher and for the slider to be effective, does he?
"Come at the king, you best not miss. "

He won't be as effective if his best pitch
is now only featured a late in counts when he really needs to go to it. How long do you think it takes to recover from TJ’s surgery? Would you want the Sox management letting a young stud in the same scenario throwing a high stress pitch like a slider. right off of the bat? I am not implying he will never feature that pitch again, I am saying he is not going to throw it as much as a precautionary reason. THEREFORE not being as effective.

i think you’re right that it will take adjustments to be as effective IF he doesn’t/can’t go to the slider whenever he wants. but earlier you said he won’t be effective period. there is a giant gap between liriano at his most effective pre-tj and ineffective.

cognitive error loop.
you said earlier he COULD NOT throw his slider and then that he was only using it “sparingly.” your source was from april. you further relied on the source’s prediction (“figures to”) that liriano would fundamentally alter his approach to state that he HAS done so.
those are not opinions. i’ve never given an opinion on this. i don’t know how effective he will be. i just differed with your statements of fact (that he can not throw the pitch because he can’t get the torque or that he is only using it sparingly), which you have slowly backed away from in more recent posts, because they are belied by much more recent reports as late as last week.

He follows Liriano right?
“In 2006 he was a fastball-slider pitcher who used his changeup sparingly, but Sunday he was a fastball-changeup pitcher who used his slider sparingly. Many people believe that relying so heavily on his slider is to blame for Liriano’s elbow injury, and clearly the plan at this point is to make it a much smaller part of his arsenal. That may be the correct move, but the impact that a fundamental change in his approach figures to have on his performance has seemingly been overlooked.”

which theory are you talking about?
you have one theory that he will be ineffective. that one obviously can’t be proven right or wrong until he pitches more.
the other is that he has fundamentally changed his approach to avoid throwing sliders. a very recent report indicates he’s throwing it regularly. disproved.

I would not necessarily say he is throwing sliders regularly,
he may be throwing MORE sliders than he was but he will not be able to rely on it like he did in 06’. CAN I HAVE A FUCKING OPINION DICK HEAD?

which is why i didn’t discount your “opinion” that he won’t be effective. but it’s not an “opinion” to say that he has fundamentally altered his approach. that’s a statement of fact.

Dick Allen – 3Bhttp://www.bugsandcranks.com/the-clubhouse/cameron-martin/the-all-dick-team/
Claim(s) to fame: ’64 NL ROY, ’72 AL MVP, 351 career home runs, .534 slugging percentage. Probably should have been the first Dick elected to the Hall of Fame, but he smoked a cigarette for the cover of Sports Illustrated, and the BBWAA hates smokers. ...

I don’t know why, but I found the beginning hysterical:
“Once upon a time, Dick was a common name. In fact, it was so common that when "Bewitched" needed to replace Dick York in 1969, it replaced him with Dick Sargent.”

I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.
ah, thanks for stroking my ego.
at any rate, doesn’t necessarily mean i was right – could have been the last guy on for all we know. however, the fact that he was featured on the show and they were fluffing him pretty good – “top pitching prospect in the white sox system” – indicates that somebody at either mlb/baseball channel or team usa likes him.

Bud
Bud Selig would not talk about the possibility of a tie in Tuesday’s All-Star game:http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/027880.php“It will not happen again,” Selig said of a tie. “We’ve added players to the roster. We’ve done things. There have been a lot of questions about all that, but I really believe that the things that we did [helped]. I mean, if we hadn’t done them, tonight there’s no question there would have been a problem. But we did. And, look, it worked out.

the fuck up is how the managers burn through their pitchers. they have 12 pitchers on their teams. 6 fucking starters. if the managers hadn’t started treating the all star game like a little league game where the manager has to make sure everyone gets to play so mommy and daddy don’t get upset this problem wouldn’t be happening. hallady threw 9 pitches yesterday. soria threw 30. something wrong with that picture, no?

from whom?
mommy and daddy? there are now 32 players on each team. 32. for one game. it’s a colossal joke. it didn’t used to be like this. it’s not like extra inning games are a new phenomenon for the ASG. had one in the seventies. went 12 innings. NL used five pitchers. juan uribe doesn’t complain when he doesn’t get to play in a game. these filler all-stars can make themselves happy that they made the team. i keep hearing that this game counts.
players, teams, teammates, families...

Who are they trying to impress? I didn’t see any “Hi, Mom!” waves. Only in college. The incentive bonuses in the contract are just for making the team, not how/if they performed.
CWS: Slashing negative expectations since May, 2008.
yeah.
the problem is the expectations. people, maybe players, too, have come to accept that they’re all going to play. someone who was there can correct me if i’m wrong but the last time an ASG went 15 innings the AL used five pitchers and still had a guy in their back pocket for when/if catfish ran out of steam. yes, the game is different nowadays and i don’t expect the teams to consist of 6 pitchers with guys willing to go five. but i’m not sure i see a big deal in just saying we’re going to use three starters for two innings each, go to three relievers for the 7th-9th, and leave the rest, however many you want, in reserve for extras or if someone gets into trouble.
people seem to want to have their cake – a resolution to the game – and eat it, too – make sure everyone plays and no one gets overused. can’t do it. pick one.
hopefully we win it all

when the price of oil retreats back to closer to $100 over the next 6-9 months i guess we’ll be in great shape. what was wrong with what bush said again?
Interesting
You’ve “peaked” my interest in oil – hehehe.
Can you clarify your position on oil retreating back to $100? Do you mean retreating back to 100-110 or just stabilize and fall down perhaps to 130?
This seems to contradict what I have been conditioned to believe, so some perspective is refreshing.
yes, closer to $110
i speak to a lot of smart people who do a lot of extensive legwork and put in a lot of thought to make a lot of money. i’ve found in the past that when a lot of them start to say the same thing, a lot of the time it ends up happening. and they started telling me a couple few months ago the price was not sustainable for a variety of reasons. take it for what its worth.
Thanks for the insight
I didn’t see that oil had fallen the last few days and that it sits at $134 / barrel before writing, so you seemed near prophetic when whatsherface on the local news talked about oil prices falling.

Alyssa Milano Swears Off Baseball Players
Alyssa Milano has sworn off dating baseball players, because they are too childish. The actress admits she is a huge fan of the sport, and even dreams of being a star slugger. But, after dating San Francisco Giants pitcher Barry Zito, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny and Atlanta Braves star Tom Glavine, she’s determined to court more mature men, like her current mystery beau, known only as "David." Milano says, "They are grown men playing a little boy’s sport. That makes them childish."http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/newsstand/discussion/milano_swears_off_baseball_players/

fun with projections or "how i learned to stop worrying and just DFA SWISHER AND KONERKO ALREADY FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST"
By virtue of having high expectations and falling well short, these ten players are all expected to have better to much better second halves of the season. Here is their projected second-half OPS, followed by their updated seasonal count:
Miguel Cabrera: .936, .879
Ryan Howard: .932, .873
Paul Konerko: .825, .757
Robinson Cano: .797, .708
Ryan Zimmerman: .810, .771
Ryan Garko: .776, .716
Todd Helton: .854, .816
Derek Jeter: .804, .766
Alexis Rios: .798, .764
Nick Swisher: .808, .777
Of these ten players, the only one whose updated seasonal OPS would come within 50 points of his pre-season projection is Nick Swisher; his OPS was projected to be .826 and is updated to .777. Cano, Garko, and Konerko (is Konerko what you get if you combine the names Cano and Garko?) are all updated to have an OPS over 100 points lower than they were prior to the season. Cabrera, Howard, and Helton should all have very good second halves and they are the only three on this list whose updated seasonal OPS would clock in at over .800. All ten of these players should perform better than they did in the first half but they are also very likely to finish the season worse than we thought they would.
