Carrasco Still Has Option Remaining

The White Sox traveling party originally thought reliever D.J. Carrasco was out of options and would be subject to being placed on waivers if he was taken off the 25-man roster to make room for Bobby Jenks.

But it turns out Carrasco, who pitched 5 1/3 innings of one-run relief Friday night at Texas, has one option left. It's a pleasant development for the Sox, who probably will decide if Carrasco or Adam Russell will be optioned to Triple-A Charlotte to make room for Jenks.

Russell pitched well until Sunday at Texas, and Carrasco showed he might be better suited for the long relief role with his experience as he spent parts of three major-league seasons with Kansas City before pitching in Japan.

But the Sox won't make a decision until they're convinced Jenks has recovered from tightness in his left scapula.

I don't see what the big deal is...

If the Sox really like Carrasco that much, they could just send Russell down instead. So the option is nice but it isn’t that important unless the Sox like Russell more. And is there a big difference between the two right now?

this from the guy who will post random news about the randomest of players.

the big deal is that flexibility is fun on the white sox.

I think thats a given,

since they wouldn’t be too random if they are our players.

Agreed - a lardy ba-ZING

MM, I’m getting killed the last 2 days. Effin Feds cracking down on the shorts (though I am not short, I’m not long banks/brokers) causing me pain. How YOU doin’?

i can't believe this crusade against 'speculators'. it's time for people to look up the definition.

it’s gonna suck when the decision to switch back to the up-tick rule goes back in place. people are gonna point to the selloff and blame shorts, then point to the eventual rally and say it’s because of the uptick rule. not only does it only delay the inevitable, it makes trading a fucking bitch for us. it’s amazing how tremendously vocal the uninformed clowns are who keep touting this crap.

by rhythm on Jul 18, 2008 1:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No, I like that you posted the news...

but the flexibility isn’t that big of a deal when Russell has options and the difference in performance between Russell and Carrasco is probably negligible. If they like Carrasco that much, they could just send Russell down since it will be either Carrasco or Russell who goes when Jenks comes back tomorrow.

numbers at the break.

sox relievers have thrown the third fewest innings in the majors.
individually, dotel is 55th among relievers in innings pitched, thornton 87th, linebrink 92nd, masset 109th, logan 122nd, and jenks 126th.

from nate silver in mid-april: "If [White Sox pitchers] John Danks and Gavin Floyd are better than we think"—PECOTA predicts five wins each in 2008—"then the Sox could win the division," he says.

I guess I don't get the reference

Traveling Party? Is this a level 4 dungeon? “It’s a pleasant devlopment for the Sox” So clarity is a bit lacking here.

by madvillian on Jul 16, 2008 9:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

with you, at least halfway.

as far as i can tell, “traveling party” is defined by different people in different ways. my reference to wives and girlfriends was a poor attempt at humor, but nevertheless i refuse to believe that williams/hahn/minor league director didn’t know carrasco’s status.

as for the “pleasant development,” it looks to me like that’s all gonzalez. that too makes some sense because i doubt carrasco has been some hot topic of discussion and the revelation that he has an option remaining probably was news, and positive news at that with the added flexibility, to gonzo.

"Come at the king, you best not miss. "

by Toonderstrook on Jul 16, 2008 9:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

perhaps if you don't get the reference, you should hold off on judgment.

certain front office personnel will travel with the team. sometimes it’ll go all the way up to KW or hahn or fabian. more often, however, it will be lower level guys – in addition to the travel director, of course. KC and dallas aren’t exactly stellar destinations.

by larry on Jul 17, 2008 9:10 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah, but his shoulder doesn't allow him to put enough torque on his curve so he's only a two-pitch pitcher

No way one of those can lead a team to the playoffs.

Announcer: [A fan] from Frederick, Maryland, wants to know why you don't go out and get some more team speed.

Weaver: Team speed, for Chrissake, you get BLEEP god damn little fleas on the bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big BLEEP who can hit the BLEEP ball out of the BLEEP ballpark and you can't make any god damn mistakes.

Actually Bobby has channeled Tesla

And created a positive energy device. Basically the motion of his massive gut rocking back and then forward creates a super vortex where superstrings break into their most fundamental parts and the laws of space and time are broken. Much like the “warp drive” of Star Trek fame the gut-action allows Bobby to throw the ball 2.4 times the speed of light, much to the Chagrin of Einstein.
