Sox option D.J. Carrasco
Carrasco's contract was purchased from Charlotte on July 9 to take the roster spot of Bobby Jenks. He made one appearance for the White Sox, allowing one run on four hits over 5.1 IP on July 11 at Texas, the longest appearance by a Sox reliever since Sean Lowe also went 5.1 IP on May 24, 1999 at Cleveland. ...The Chicago White Sox have optioned right-handed pitcher D.J. Carrasco to Class AAA Charlotte and have sent right-hander Esteban Loaiza to Class AA Birmingham on an injury rehabilitation assignment.

guess the flexibility was sort of a big deal.
not as big as what’s up with nomo, sexson, and tony clark, but important nonetheless

AP Source: Yankees reach deal with SexsonBy THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: July 17, 2008Filed at 6:01 p.m. ET
NEW YORK (AP)—First baseman Richie Sexson and the New York Yankees reached a deal Thursday, a week after the Seattle Mariners cut the slumping slugger.
A person familiar with the contract said Sexson would be paid a prorated share of the $390,000 minimum salary. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not been made.
ESPN.com first reported a tentative agreement between Sexson and the Yankees.
The Yankees were eager to add a powerful right-handed bat as they start the second half of the season. They went into the All-Star break third in the AL East, six games behind Boston.
Sexson hit .344 with five home runs in 71 at-bats against lefties this year. That was his bright spot during a season in which the 33-year-old Sexson hit .218 overall with 11 homers and 30 RBIs.
The Yankees picked up a fraction of Sexson’s contract, leaving the Mariners to pay the rest of his $14 million salary.
New York is minus two of its top hitters. Leadoff man Johnny Damon is on the disabled list because of an injured left shoulder and Hideki Matsui is sidelined with a sore knee that could require season-ending surgery.
The Yankees’ lineup is packed with left-handed hitters - Damon, Matsui, Jason Giambi, Bobby Abreu and Robinson Cano swing from that side - and New York has struggled against lefty pitching all year.
A native of Brush Prairie, Wash., the 6-foot-8 Sexson became a frequent target of boobirds in Seattle over the past two years. He hit a career-low .205 with 21 homers and 100 strikeouts in 2007, and often was benched in favor of Miguel Cairo this season.
Seattle, one of baseball’s biggest disappointments this year, released Sexson right before the All-Star break.
Sexson has hit 30 or more homers six times, and also has six seasons of at least 100 RBIs. He started his major league career in 1997 with Cleveland and later played for Milwaukee and Arizona.
Sexson signed a $50 million, four-year contract with the Mariners in December 2004. He topped 30 homers and 100 RBIs in his first two seasons, then dropped off significantly last year.

Joe Blanton to the Phillies...
“Phils reach agreement on Blanton”>
The Phillies have reached an agreement with the Oakland Athletics to acquire right-handed pitcher Joe Blanton. Blanton is 5-12 this season after going 14-10 with a 3.95 ERA last season. The Athletics get second baseman Adrian Cardenas, pitcher Josh Outman and outfielder Matthew Spencer, all minor leaguers.

Why is Beane collecting so many second basemen?
Jemile Weeks, Eric Patterson, Adrian Cardenas…
Justin Duchscherer is definitely available.
by SSH2005 on Jul 17, 2008 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gio Gonzalez will replace Joe Blanton in the A's rotation...
The sources who confirmed the trade would not identify the prospects, and if none of them are big league-ready starters, it’s likely that Gio Gonzalez will be promoted from Triple-A Sacramento, giving the A’s three southpaw starters.

All of them, iirc, are good athletes
so I wonder if they aren’t making some Carlos Gonzalez contingency plans. Weeks and Cardenas, only 20 and hitting very well in the FSL, are definitely better than Patterson though. According to the minor league DTs, Cardenas’ peak is going to look something like .310/.370/.470, iirc. And according to the regular translation, he’s hitting at his 90th percentile PECOTA line. So he’s got a pretty nice ceiling, basically.

by Toonderstrook on Jul 17, 2008 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
His fastball only ever topped out at 91 MPH...
Problem is, he seems to be mainly throwing around 85 MPH this season. Obviously, this could be due to him being a starter now and wanting to conserve his stamina so he is dialing it down. Here’s a good article on Duch…
“Thin? No fastball? A’s Duchscherer became two-time All-Star”

his babip is almost surely unsustainably low so far this year, although his ld rate is a little about his career.
regardless, he has always been a bitch to hit against. and according to fangraphs, the average velocity of his fastball has barely changed since 2005 (86, 86.7, 85.5, 86).

his velocity has never been the league average but he's still gotten guys out pretty consistently.
did you mean his stuff wasn’t going to play as a starter for long? if not, isn’t his body of work to this point an indication that he can get people out without gassing them?

do you remember who did exactly? all i remember is the Sox did. i thought i remember SD, so that could be weighted thanks to Mr. Maddux.
are you trying to use stats around here? what the fuck do you think this is? - MM
by colintj on Jul 17, 2008 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
as a starter, yes.
in the pen, he’s fine because he’s not exposed long enough without it. most guys without a good fastball simply have tiny margins for error and, generally, an inability to get whiffs which the bigger fastballs don’t have to worry about. more PAs/start—>more opportunities for error. points out why taking pitches is critical against such pitchers. the next one could be the cookie.
also, the second graph is one that says that maybe he can survive for a while. note the dip around 85. that could be a fluke in the data. this is ‘07 data, which was spotty and weighted heavily by those pitchers in whose parks the pfx system was installed. on the other hand, it may be a legit confluence of rarity and juuuust fast enough. it’s hard to get a read.

More interesting stuff

I’d say that basically confirms what I said about margin of error. Slower fastball pitchers have to throw into a much smaller box.

Also cool:

This shows that, with something of a sample size caveat, Brian Bannister might be able to pull off that lower than average BABIP. Combine a well spotted fastball and good breaking stuff, and you’re on your way. I suppose that’s what Jon Garland is, more or less.

If the Braves came calling, Maddux says he’d likely approve the trade because his family would approve of the two-month transition back to the East Coast. His wife, Kathy, and his children visited friends in Atlanta for the Fourth of July.“That would be a possibility,” Maddux said. “That would be easy for me with my family. i don't consider the twins particularly cheap.
they pay nathan, morneau, cuddyer, mauer a heck of a lot of money. simply because they have a young team, especially with young pitching, don’t make them cheap. or simply because they won’t pony up to overpay for santana or hunter, either. that ballpark has them a bit flusher with cash than in the past. the times they are achangin’.

i guess the twins' relative success is even more remarkable then,
since apparently they don’t pay free agents and also keep their better minor leaguers down longer than they should be to avoid paying them either.

joe nathan is 33. maybe that's young to you.
cuddyer is 29. not really that young either. the twins this year, perhaps unnoticed by some, are signing players to what i would consider pretty much market contracts. will they be players for the big free agents? no. but they seem to be following more of the white sox model right now than the typical small market model.

They'd also been rumoured to have spoken about trading Nathan (pre-Neshek, I know)
so I don’t think they considered Nathan’s contract to be an albatross. (Yes, 33 is young, except to Jesus and everyone on this site. How old is Mariano? Hoffman? Nathan seems to be a durable guy.) I agree that they are following the Sox model, which looks like a pretty good strategy (Garland’s trade return was decent, MB’s contract looks good, Paulie and Count’s contracts – uh – AJ and Dye don’t look that bad, either).
I was speaking of the M & M boys’s contracts apeing the Indians of the ‘90s. But you are correct – they are not letting them walk unless they can’t pay and they are not white (there, I said it).

i'm not sure any team should sign someone to an albatross contract.
that seems more smart than cheap. if that’s the litmus test, there are probably only four or five teams in baseball who aren’t cheap.
by larry on Jul 18, 2008 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I meant that in a relative way -
what the Twinks think is expensive might not be what others think is unwise. They never would’ve signed Liney to 4 years.
Wait, neither would anyone here, either. Bad example. OK, they never would’ve paid JD $23MM over 2 years.
Wait, neither would anyone here, either.
Who are the other 3-4 teams who aren’t cheap besides us?

that would be hugely depressing to a twins fan if they don't bring him up
that’s a little too Loria-chic if you ask me.

There would be no excuse for the Twins if they don't bring him up...
Livan’s paltry $5 million dollar contract is not a good excuse and neither is his 9 wins and 5.44 ERA.
If they don’t call up Liriano - and soon - the reason will be obvious.

if it isn't already
i know that if they don’t it makes the Sox’ chances all the better, but fuck that. that’s bad for baseball.

Unless Loaiza was throwing below 80 MPH...
he may have bought some more time with the Sox.

impressive.
his first AA game and he goes yard twice, lefty on lefty. I’ve been thinking about posting something on him. He may be the best hitting prospect in our system right now (not counting those that have big league service time). Of course that’s partially because our system is horrible. But at the time of his promotion he was 4th in the Carolina league in OPS, behind Wietters and 2 other guys that are older than him. He’s 22 so not bad for High A and completely appropriate for a AA prospect. He’s not an A or even B+prospect and once Beckham arrives he’ll instantly be the second best hitter (maybe 3rd if Danks signs). But he’s someone to keep an eye on.
I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

Allow myself to quote...myself
“Brandon Allen – More notable than actual prospect, he’s still worth talking about. A 5th round pick in 2004, he does have some pedigree and at 22, he comes under the Carolina League average of 22.9. He repeated Kanny last year for a .283/.337/.479 line and this year has put up .294/.363/.582. His walk rate is respectable and his power has been above .220 4 consecutive months (he had 14 PA in Sept, so I didn’t count it), so it is probably real. As a first baseman, his bat is his only ticket to the Show and so far his peak translation is pretty inviting: .271/.335/.523. The caveat here is his home/road splits, but, iirc, W-S isn’t a hitter’s paradise. At his age with few real concerns about his performance thus far, I think it would be wise to get him up to Birmingham as soon as possible.”

I think the most
encouraging part of his step forward is the increase in walk rate (from 7.4% to 11.7%) despite the promotion from low A to high A.

With most players of his ilk, Ks are the big concern at this point.
If it gets into the 25% K/PA range, his BA is going to decline to a point his ISO and BB% can’t overcome to make him average. More Jason Kubel than Paul Konerko.

Brandon Allen might be the reason...
Kenny didn’t think twice about giving up Chris Carter for Carlos Quentin… well, other than Quentin being a stud. Maybe Kenny knew he already had another version of Carter in Allen.
But from what I have read, both Carter and Allen are pretty much DH’s.

so nicely done.
and carter has more upside but i’d say his K rate is a big worry at this point.

he's the next BIG thing in chicago
by the time he gets to the bigs…he’ll be uribe-esque…swinging chicken legs and eating ice cream cones while he’s on deck….shoving in hot dogs while playing the field…and having his ass engulf other players so he can get himself higher on the depth charts
