New York Yankees
Are you like me?
Have you been watching sports television and wondered, "Hey, how come this channel never mentions the Yankees? I sure would like to see more stuff about that great team from New York."
OK so maybe the timing is bad since the Disney sports station has crammed anything in pinstripes up our butts sideways for a solid month, but after all the hype and parades and a fifty minute delay of pure crap before the all-star game, I cant help but notice what this storied franchise is actually doing these days.
50-45, third place, 5.5 games out of the wildcard, and who do they turn to?
Richie Sexson? LOL. Are you kidding me? And then theres talk they might want to trade for Damaso Marte? Wow.
Im sure Boston is trembling with fear.
Heck, they're probably even laughing about that in Tampa.
If they had some real gnads they would go and sign baseballs big asterisk Barry Bonds. Then when they miss the playoffs, and they will miss the playoffs, they can blame Barry even though he'd probably be the second most productive hitter on the team.
I think this year marks the end of an era for the Stankees.
The new digs will ring in an era where Jeter* cant hit anymore(and hes been a liability on the field-http://www.billjamesonline.net/fieldingbible/jeter.asp ), they cant outbid for everyone because the profit sharing allows other teams to keep their stars, it all points towards the demise of NYY.
Good Riddance.
Meet the new Yankees, your Chicago Cubs. They'll be way up into the luxury tax bracket(or whatever its called) of payroll in about 2 years. Of course, they had to go for it now, 100 years is a long time. And just like when the Yanks were top dog, the Cubs dont have anyone in their division that is willing or capable of spending like that. Boston didnt used to match the Yanks dollar for dollar like they basically do now(and started doing when the desperation rolled in- the same desperation the Cubs currently reek of).
The Cubs have the nations hearts for whatever various reasons, and even have another team in town that the elitists and front running crowd can thumb their noses to, just like in New York. Plus with Yankee stadium getting demolished(and rightfully so-I was thoroughly unimpressed), the Cubs now are that much more epic with the ancient friendly confines.
I can only hope the Cubs turn into a team that is hated like the Yankees are in waves of backlash. So far its Cincinatti and the southside onboard that righteous crusade...
_________________________________________________________________
* the worst part about Jeter is that hes going to start in the next several all-star games like he did in this one, and as soon as next year might be blowing it for the AL like he tried to do this past weekend.

right on
although the Yankees are hated in large part due to their success. The Cubs don’t have that burden, so they are a long ways from the backlash. The Red Sox are much closer to being the target of that crusade.

demise?
perhaps. but i think not. they still have as much or more money than everyone else. they still have some excellent prospects coming up/arrived. they still have the best player in the game.
how does a rotation of cc, joba, wang, hughes and kennedy/mussina/petitte/horne look to you? i’ll take it.
their job is more difficult due to the arrival of the rays. but i’ve heard about their demise before. i’ll believe it when i see it.

The Cubs will never reach the Yankees level of hatred
Because, the Yankees, were like um good for several years. And by good I mean they won 4 World Series, which is enough to hate any team. Throw in the ramblings of the Boss, the supreme media love that Jeter got (who on the Cubs will ever get that much national praise? Derek Lee? Zambrano?). Hell, even Joba got more ESPN coverage than a Cubs player just for making a start in June.

You are a zygote
if all you remember is 4 WS titles. I was around when they sucked hard in the ‘60’s and laughed, laughed, laughed. Then Steinbrenner bought them and the Sox were BAzzled in the Azzled for years.
Hate is too good for the Spanks. It shows they can still get under your skin. I prefer the cold-blooded demeanor of an executioner.
(Who am I kidding? HHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!)

you should probably qualify that by saying "late" '60s...
since the yankees played the same number of world series from 1960-64 than the white sox have in their history.

I qualify for those who can't research. We're not talking Maris '61* here.
You need no qualification. You do, however, need to take a lunch today. Go go eat some sprouts and wash it down with some Chardonnay. Then come back and give me my tax dollar value, GD it. Plus, you need to be strong for the game tonight.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

If I'm a zygote, what does that make you? Aged sperm?
I won’t talk about history when I have no idea what the general consensus about the Yankees is prior to 1996. Unfortunately, when I learned American history in school we focused on stupid things like the war and the sexual escapades of Kennedy.

The King is Dead ; Long Live the King
I don’t think the Yankees demise is imminent, and only a “hard cap” setup similar to what the NFL and NBA have instituted will prevent the Yankees from simply spending their way to the top.
The Yankees have a huge advantage simply built in: they play in New York, where much of the nation’s media, wealth and population resides. If they can spend it as fast as they can make it then what will stop them from simply continuing to sign the best players?
Sure, this much ballyhooed “new era” that started with the refusal to trade (and then sign) Santana might have indicated a shift in philosophy, but it was a pretty subtle shift, if any. The Yanks still lead the league in payroll, spending a shopping 35% more than the next closest team (the Tigers). They still can draft players with out any nod to “signability”, they can still invest in the best trainers, facilities, etc.
