"White Sox Minor League News and Notes" or "Someone Else's Review of a Major Motion Picture"
Kevin Goldstein of BP is reporting in his "unannounced signings":
University of Texas outfielder Jordan Danks, a seventh-round pick with the confusing combination of great tools and uninspiring numbers, will join his brother as a member of the White Sox family for around half a million.
In other news, Aaron Poreda had a good outing, 6IP, 1 run, 3K, and Brandon Allen continues to like AA pitching, with a double and a home run.

in other draft news, no surprise
It doesn’t appear that the Sox will sign pitcher Kyle Long, their 23rd round pick in the 2008 draft. Long, the son of former NFL great Howie Long, will honor his commitment to Florida State after a chat last week with a Sox scout.

Danks Opinions?
So, what’s the deal with this kid? From a casual scan, I’ve seen a wide variety of opinions, ranging from “first round talent” to “uninspiring and overrated.” Why did he fall to the 7th round? Why did he command a half million signing bonus? What kind of player do we think he is going to be?
by Landfill on Jul 19, 2008 12:53 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He is thought to have
1st round talent by many. His performance though was sandwich round/ second round. But since he was initially represented by Boras he was thought to be a tough sign. Thus he fell to the 7th round. The theory was that the Sox talked to him after day one of the draft, and he indicated a willingness to sign. So first round of the second day, boom. Then he got rid of Boras. Ever since then it’s been felt to be only a matter of time till he signed.
I think we ought to call Thome and Konerko the "Cholesterol Brothers" because of the way they clog the bases.

I wouldn’t get too excited about Joucer, his strikeout rate is pretty uninspiring especially when you consider his age (22) for his level (rookie ball). I’d be surprised if he goes on to do anything at the higher levels.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
by The Wizard on Jul 25, 2008 1:01 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Using mainly a low-90s fastball, Paniagua silenced Johnson City’s (18-18) bats last night, going seven innings on just 81 pitches and allowing only one run [6 K / 1 BB] in the BriSox 3-2 victory over the Cardinals at Howard Johnson Field. The Dominican Republic native worked quickly, surrendering only five hits and one walk. The win runs his record to 3-1 and dropped his ERA to 4.00.
"Obviously, [Paniagua] did an outstanding job tonight," BriSox manager Bobby Thigpen said. "He attacked hitters, attacked the zone, it seemed like he had all his pitches working.
Seven innings for us is pretty good, especially with the pitch count we have for guys right now."Paniagua never reached his predetermined limit of 85 pitches.

John Ely
John Ely broke out of a July funk by pitching five scoreless innings, and the Warthogs bullpen did the rest in a crisp 3-0 win over the Salem Avalanche last night at Ernie Shore Field.Ely (4-11) had endured a murderous stretch in which he was 0-4 with a 16.78 earned-run average in four July starts. Last night, he scattered eight hits and struck out five [0 BB] and was pulled after the fifth inning when he had thrown only 61 pitches.
“He was five positive,” said Brian Drahman, the Warthogs’ pitching coach. “Theoretically he could have gone a couple of more innings, but for a positive outing and where he was right there, it was good enough for us. It was for him. It was a positive start for the five or six outings he has left.”
Michael Dubee, Wander Perez, Matt Zaleski, and Henry Mabee cleaned up behind Ely with four scoreless innings in relief as the Warthogs won the four-game series 3-1 and posted their first shutout since June 12.

Prospect Of The Day
The Athletics have improved their farm system substantially in the past season, adding top prospects like Brett Anderson, Adrian Cardenas, Gio Gonzalez and Michel Inoa. Of course, a team should improve its farm system dramatically when it trades the contracts of Dan Haren, Nick Swisher and Joe Blanton. One of the players the A’s added in the last year was outfielder Aaron Cunningham, who came to Oakland along with Anderson in the deal that sent Haren to the Diamondbacks. While it’s easy to get lost in the system the A’s have now, Cunningham made plenty of noise yesterday for Midland, going 4-for-6 with two home runs and a double, giving him 11 homers on the season. Cunningham, who is now batting .315/.384/.500 in 308 at-bats while splitting time between center and left field, last had a multi-homer game in 2006 while playing for low Class A Kannapolis as a White Sox farmhand.http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=1427

in other words…not that impressive for a guy who is unlikely to be able to play CF. and he’s a RHB, so there isn’t a lot of platoon value. if the pop comes, then look out. but KG has said he doesn’t think it will.

Regular Translation: .223 .324 .506
He’s basically Brad Eldred with more walks and slightly less power, but you’d be hoping one of them could keep that average in the .240-.250 range. If that happened with McPherson his line suddenly looks pretty palatable: .243/.343/.526

I take it you're talking about a platoon?
I don’t think that would be a terrible idea, but then again, you don’t see a lot of them (strict platoons). You’d presumably be paying
Speaking of which, I was wondering what Dan Johnson had been up to since he got picked up with Tampa Bay. I see that he’s continued to hit AAA pitching with a .950 OPS for Durham. Maybe Bull Pain can drop some knowledge on how Johnson has looked…
by CWSKeith on Jul 28, 2008 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
honestly, i was just hoping to catch adequacy in a bottle
but a mcpherson/eldred platoon could be pretty good.
McPherson vs. RHP: .292/.402/.665
Eldred vs. LHP: .258/.355/.591
that isn’t translated, so take it fwiw. basically, the extra walks BE takes from LHP would get him into the .320s of OBP. that plus his power would be fine for days against LH starters. or you could just use paulie.

Jones was in his second season as Kannapolis’ manager. The Intimidators were 47-58, including a 16-19 mark in the second half.

white sox potential prospect help
Approximate Post-Season Odds: 3-2
The Big Gun: Non-existent in one of baseball’s weaker systems.
Extra Starters: The Triple-A rotation is filled with mediocre strike throwers, which is why you’ve seen Clayton Richard summoned from Double-A ahead of them, as Lance Broadway, Jack Egbert, and Wes Whisler are all command-and-control types. If the need arises, Egbert is likely first in line.
September Fortifications: Josh Fields will likely be back, but his performance at Triple-A (.248/.325/.450) hasn’t exactly earned him the call. Former Pirate prospect Brad Eldred has a .607 slugging percentage thanks to 28 home runs in 305 at-bats, and could be an all-or-nothing bench bat. Chris Getz is a lefty bat with on-base skills, can fill in at five positions, and could get an audition for a big-league gig next year.
The Long Shot: Their 2007 first-round pick, Aaron Poreda, is already in the Double-A rotation, and scouts still think the six-foot-six lefty with plus-plus velocity (but little else) could dominate out of the bullpen.
