Stone to replace DJ in TV booth?
Speculation that the Sox may replace DJ with Stone in the TV booth next year.
"His longest contract as a player was one year, and that speaks to why Darrin Jackson changed uniforms eight times in his baseball career.
But as a broadcaster, Jackson has never been in the uncomfortable position in which he currently finds himself — unsure whether the White Sox want him back next season.
The Sox hold an option on Jackson, and they don't plan to let him know their intentions until late in the season or after the season, when they're obliged to do so contractually. ..."

DJ is a playa!
But with two young children in Chicago and two more in Arizona, he would like a clear picture of his future.

If DJ was shown the door, I would hope that means the Sox would pursue an actual voice instead of loading up their teams with four ex-jocks again.
where should we put the odds of this happening? 1 in 1000?

Go have your Brie and Chardonnay. Work on the novel yet to be published.
I’m going home now to enjoy a 4 day weekend. I am psyched. No work until the 8th, clients down only 2% this year, Sox on a tear, and I might actually be able to stay up for the game tonight.
What would Hawk say? YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS!
Time to get my wine on.

Much more of a burritos and tequila guy myself, but whatever floats your boat.
Enjoy your time off, you’ve earned it (having lost only 2% of your clients’ money). Have you informed them that they would have been better off just sticking their money in the bank for the past year instead of letting your dumb ass play around with it? ;)
I expect that you will be in top form tonight, what with your getting your wine on and all, you crazy bastard. I will be sober, as always, dreaming of what might of been had I not been admitted to Betty Ford last year – NOT! /Borat Style

You are a short-term thinker
As Chris Rock says, life isn’t short. Life is LLLOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGG. Gotta look at where you are in the long run (though, as Galbreath once said, in the long run we’re all dead). But yes, losses suck. But just like baseball, they’re part of the game.
Sober like MM, you will be, I’d wager. Meaning you are one more poor decision away from the cops beating down your door. :p
Gotta be fun for you to have the Sox in your time zone.

Sox in my time zone, did you start drinking early?
The A’s are playing the Sox in Chi-town for this 4 game set. The Sox won’t make it out here until August, IIRC.
Overall, I think I’m more of a huge jackass than a short-term thinker. Hindsight is a great tool for making fun of people in your profession. Although making nightly investments in tequila and gin bottles might not get the return I was looking for and I’m starting to think that my investment in the great crack mines in Texas aren’t going to work out so well. Who knew that there wasn’t any crack in Texas?

So you did figure out that I was joking, correct?
Although common in posts by others that frequent this site (I’m looking SoB’s way), I’m not one to contradict myself mid-post unless I’m screwing around.
The “I’m a burritos and tequila guy” followed by the “I will be sober, as always” tipped off the others. I’ll try to add a “clearly” from now on, just to be sure.
Cheers to you for asking, though. Do you feel like you need some help getting off the booze? For a small fee, I’d be happy to come visit you and drink all of your booze so that you don’t have any around to tempt you. I can also make you exercise, give yourself daily colonics, and drink wheat grass. For a little bit more, we can get SSH over there to teach you how to shave your balls. DJ is just bad. Not anywhere near Ron Santo bad, but bad nonetheless.
I watch the games more than I listen, so I’d love to have Stone paired up with Hawk, thus hopefully Hawk (as has Farmio this year) would have to step up his game a notch or two.

Look for the movie called "Tulia"
about the drug trafficking in West Texas. Halle Barry and Billy Bob I believe. The cops set up some people and that travesty must be documented. Tulia today is a centerpiece of Mexican trafficking now and because of the scandal the police a very wary of busting anything up there now. Very wild west. It’s midway between Amarillo and Lubbock, so you can say hello to Bobby Knight’s kid at Texas Tech while you refuel your addiction.

sure, he can often be annoying (and if you take the right perspective, even some of his annoying tendencies can become unintentionally hilarious), but, for better or worse, he’s our harry caray. and i don’t know about the rest of you, but i think hawk’s calls of great moments make them even more exciting. “JOE! and for me personally, he used to golf at the country club i caddied at as a kid. he would show up real early and play by himself. on occasion i would load his bag (a black sox bag with white logo and his catch-phrases all over) on a cart and get to chat with him for a minute or two. for a 12 year old kid, that’s pretty exciting.

I read in the paper the other day that Swish invited an 8-year old kid who lost a leg to cancer to be his guest at the game a couple of nights back. Swish introduced the kid around, played toss with him and they exchanged gifts with each other.
I forget what the kid gave him…like a stuffed animal horse or something…but Swish said he would keep it in his locker the rest of the year to help inspire him.
He truly is our very own Captain Morgan…strike a pose, Swish!

this is the latest in the long line of dumb questions
Christiano Ronaldo, who is the best footballer in England wants to leave Manchester Utd and play for Real Madrid, he is under contract for another 3 years yet has publicy stated he wants to leave, he already gets paid milions, but he is leaving and will go to Madrid. It’s an extreme example but in football no one can hold onto any talent anymore, the big clubs come sniffing and they (the players) are off.
Why don’t I see similar things happen in MLB? The Yankees want Starting Pitching right? What if they said publicly “We would like to sign Danks”, (like Madrid did with Ronaldo) because they have lots of dollars to buy out his contract. But I never see this kind of thing happening, in Baseball it seems to me the Clubs decide who plays for what team, whereas in Football it’s the other way round.
can someone please explain this to me

Because baseball has contracts and free agency.
There’s no way to just throw a bunch of money at someone who’s under contract.

Teams have agreed
not to covet or ‘tamper’ with another team’s players while said player is under contract. The owners know that by doing so it only increases the players’ bargaining power and thus drive the price up. Apparently, clubs like Real Madrid likes to throw away money and ManU doesn’t know how to sue a player for breach of contract.
Show mercy. I get to watch the Rangers.
by Tim from Texas on Jul 3, 2008 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
they know how to sue for breach.
and clubs litigate this stuff fairly often, though moreso with the poaching of managers. when real madrid pays manchester united the transfer fee, the agreement will certainly include a release of all claims, boiler plate language, blah blah blah, for such fee.

So ManU could say
‘no thanks’ to the transfer fee and Ronoldo stays put? It sounds like from hoodlight ManU has to accept or they’re screwed. Am I misunderstanding this? If not, it seems ManU says no and Ronaldo can decide if he likes the money.
Show mercy. I get to watch the Rangers.
by Tim from Texas on Jul 3, 2008 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
sure they could.
clubs say no all the time. it’s far more difficult to say no to real madrid when they almost always will pay whatever amount it takes to get your player, however. plus, one needs to consider whether it’s a great idea to hold onto a player who wants to leave your club. will he still perform for you? how do you “make” a player try hard for you? heck, how does one determine a player isn’t trying hard?
the complication in football is that the clubs are also adding pressure whereas in US sports a player may demand a trade but no other club is really going to come out and say “we want john danks” and publicly state what they’re willing to offer.
by larry on Jul 3, 2008 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, they can say no
and hold him to his contract, but he will almost certainly not put the effort in and will in effect be a very expensive passenger at the club for three years.
So they have a choice, take the $120 million dollar transfer fee or keep an unhappy player for three years after which he will fuck off for nothing anyway.
If we had a system more like baseball he would probably not have had his head turned in the first place.

nobody really knows, the press found a players wage slip in 06 and with all the bonuses etc he was on over double what everyone had widely assumed he was being paid.

the clubs and leagues don’t make nearly as much money.
it’s true that a lot of it is speculation. but it’s probably generally accurate. when more of the english clubs were public companies it was easier to find out the answers to how much were transfer fees and what wages were. now that most of the big clubs are private again, not so much.

I thought the bigger teams in Europe (the perennial Champions League types) were popular on a much more worldwide level than any baseball teams outside of the Yankees. And, I suppose, even if this is true, it might be a much more recent phenomenon than I thought.

that last point is probably the key one.
every team in baseball would tell you that they’d want, say, johan santana. you’d even find some clubs that would be willing to pay lots of money to get him (see, for example, the “transfer fee” paid by boston to dice-k’s japanese baseball club). but they aren’t allowed to do either.

complex question with multiple answers
but a lot of it boils down to that: 1) a contract is a contract and rules are rules. it would be against the rules for another mlb team to say that publicly (yes, i realize it’s technically against fifa rules for real madrid to say ‘we want ronaldo’ but fifa is not particularly strong and they don’t do much of anything about this). and the contractual rights of an mlb club and the enforcement of such rights appears to be far stronger in american sports than non-american ones; 2) MLB is one organization and it’s a rather “clubby” organization. owners don’t do things to piss off other owners and those that run afoul of these formal or informal rules find themselves subject to various formal and informal sanction; 3) the different development of how players are transacted in the two sports. “buying” players under contract is severely frowned upon and is essentially against the rules. players, not a transfer fee/cash, is what is primarily exchanged.
players do demand to be traded in american sports, though probably less often in baseball than in other sports. but, again due to the tampering rules referenced above in 1, it’s not so much the clubs driving this but the players themselves.
bottom line is that the tampering rules are very strict and actually enforced with real penalties, unlike in soccer. and purchasing players (i.e., trading $150M for alex rodriguez) is essentially not allowed. thus, while the yankees can throw their money around in free agency, they can’t really throw their money around in trades.
by larry on Jul 3, 2008 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
thanks for this
the players never technically break contract (refuse to play), but will make it clear via leaks to the press etc that they are unhappy. They usually (99% of the time) get the move thay are after. The problem is, is that the talent becomes skewed in a handful of very rich clubs and the game is suffering due to a lack of competition.
I guess, it’s what the players are used to as well, the culture you have is that contracts are binding, whereas our players seem to think they aren’t even worth wiping their arse with.

Konerko update...
Konerko update, Fourth of July notesBy Mark Gonzales – 4:29 p.m.
White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko is taking an early round of batting practice against batting practice pitcher Kevin Hickey, with hitting coach Greg Walker and trainer Herm Schneider observing. Manager Ozzie Guillen watched a late session.
This development is significant, only because Schneider is watching closely. Konerko is hitting several balls to right field.
Konerko said he expects to start a minor league rehab assignment Friday at Charlotte and plans to stay through Monday.
I see Uribe being traded to the Dodgers soon to free up a spot for Konerko on the roster next week.

Stone and Farmer play off each other amazingly well. Can anybody suggest a better two (especially working currently)?
