The Royals are facing the Sox best pitcher...

The Sox are facing a non-lefty bum starter with a 5.24 ERA. A loss would be pathetic.

worked with swisher, right?

It simply can’t all be bad luck…

Bad luck doesn’t make a player’s numbers look like Neifi Perez’s. I’m sure that bad luck can make them look worse but not as bad as Swisher’s — .201 / .327 / .307 / .634. If Swisher was at least hitting the occasional homerun to up his SLG, I would buy that… but he isn’t. Is he even on pace for double digit homers this season? That’s ridiculous.

I think Swisher swinging at breaking shit at his shins and also taking two-strike pitches right down the cock of the plate are hurting his numbers.

yeah, you're totally right.

after those first couple months, he should be, like, already back up to a .900 OPS. that’s how regression to the mean works. you get unlucky for awhile and then you magically get all that luck back and your stats are magically back to exactly where they should be in half the time. luck + magic = reality. i can see you’ve learned a whole lot, ssh. keep up the good idiocy.

No, no, no

They can’t just be high standards – any jerk can do that.

They have to be impossibly high standards. With the lazy players we got these days, only that kind of internet vitriol can motivate them.

why not give broadway or haeger a shot...

i know their numbers have been overall far from impressive but at least they’re not 31 year olds who are not part of the future and very likely not the solution for our 5th starter issues

by Sox Fan Louie on Jul 20, 2008 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

as mentioned above, dj carrasco.

there are practical considerations. first, haeger pitched yesterday and thus wouldn’t be available. second, broadway, as you point out, has been poor. why not go with the guy who has – i know i must be out on a limb here – produced?

by larry on Jul 20, 2008 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

broadway has pitched better of late...

and i understand what you’re saying of carrasco. but as long as we’re choosing the best of two evils, id rather choose the younger one.

More on Contreras
Contreras would be eligible to pitch again next Sunday against Detroit, but manager Ozzie Guillen said that “he’s not going to come off Sunday just because. If he’s not ready to pitch, he’s going to stay there until he’s ready to perform.”

Guillen was not happy about Contreras’ honesty the last few outings, feeling he was hiding pain. He is 0-5 with an ERA near 13 in his last five starts.

“I wasn’t too pleased the way he handled the situation,” Guillen said. “He didn’t let [trainer] Herm Schneider know, myself or [pitching coach Don] Cooper know and he continued to pitch that way. When you’re hurt, you’re not helping the ballclub. I don’t want any of my players to go out with pain and try to be a hero. I was -– I don’t want to say upset -– a little disappointed when one of my players is hiding stuff for no reason.”

ha

not really. pitchfork has a love/hate relationship with music and its readership has one with it. but the way they’ve gone about doing the festival since ‘05 has been pretty nice. for example: 4 dollar goose islands. 5 dollar italian beef. any time you can actually nourish yourself for under 10 bucks you’re doing pretty well. lots of people but not too many. cheap water. they look out for their customers.

Joe Sheenan picking the Tigers to win the AL Central
The White Sox have a 7½-game lead on the Tigers with 66 games to play. The Playoff Odds Report gives the Sox a 71.6 percent shot at the postseason, the Tigers 6.1 percent. I think that overstates the case, but in the face of that, it’s hard to pick the Tigers to make a run and steal this thing. So I’m going to do it anyway, not because I hate the White Sox—frankly, Kenny Williams has become a top-six GM or so, and I think Ozzie Guillen is easily a top-ten manager—but because of the regression I see them having from some key performers. A two-week stretch starting Friday, in which they play the Tigers six times and the Twins four, will set the tone for the rest of the year.
