Nick Masset: A Re-Appreciation

last time we appreciated, it appeared we were about to lose our friend nick. but, in a bit of magic, nicky beat out wassermann for the final bullpen spot. and there was, shall we say, consternation amongst the SSS faithful? of course, nick then showed more of that magic and, in parallel to the white sox season, confounded expectations. however, as soxmachine points out, reality seems to be checking back in:

Has Nick Magic run its course?  He'd been sporting a high WHIP all season, and his ERA is finally starting to catch up.  Over his last seven games spanning 7 2/3 innings, he's allowed 16 hits, nine runs (seven earned) and four walks, with as many wild pitches as strikeouts (two).  Masset did throw two perfect innings against the Rangers when nobody else had success, and that's the only point in his favor as of late.

http://soxmachine.com/blogs/soxmachine/archive/2008/07/21/13456.aspx

his ERA still appears respectable at 4.14. however, his WHIP is a lardy 1.64. ozzie's experimentation with nick in slightly higher leverage roles has been your basic disaster and has contributed to the poor numbers put up by the bullpen of late.

so, on the near one year anniversary of his demotion, what does the future hold for masset?

Close your eyes and try not to listen

That’s what I have been doing recently when Masset is on the mound. Runners on base is a must with this dude. If he is starting on Tuesday against the Rangers I am very very pessimistic.

i like your use of the word 'lardy'

He was a catcher with the Orioles back in the day. Sorry looking (expletive). My brother had his card. He looked like this little kid who got left at a bus station by his parents. You know why? Because he had to catch Hoyt Wilhelms knuckle ball five (expletive) years.

OSFIB, where you been?

“lardy” first appeared, IIRC, as larry was chiding me a couple months ago for a (common for me) totally useless post. I now put “lardy” and “leitmotif”, as well as “ymmv”, as most useful and site-value-enhancing terminology. Along with the avatar, which somehow should be on a T-shirt.

Masset will have an ERA over 5.00 soon enough...

and Kenny will attempt to acquire another pitcher at the trade deadline. I think Masset moves back to his jizz-mopper role. I doubt that Kenny exposes Masset to waivers by trying to send him to AAA since he has such a big man-crush on the Magic Man.

Masset?

Come on, bring Wasserman back. Great kid who has been getting it done in Charlotte.
