Thank god for new thread
Scott Feldman sounds like an NPR gameshow host. While Colin’s Bukkake posts are things of beauty, they’re no place to spend an afternoon.
Maybe the auto-scheduler can make a mid-day Open Thread?
Speaking of Colin, are he and Rearedon still an item?

Agreed
I didn’t think we were gonna get one.
Supposedly Buerhle’s grandfather died recently? Hopefully it doesn’t get to him.
Also, anyone hitting up Wicker Park fest this weekend? I’ll be there saturday

Why doesn't he move the lineup round
to freshen things up a bit, I don’t think Pierzynski is effective anymore as the number 2 man. I’d like to see Alexei getting to bat up in the first innings.

Oh, I'm not concerned
I just think it’s funny. He’s obviously a very gifted athlete, and one would think he would believe in his abilities, so it’s interesting to see his more human (and naive) side. He obviously hasn’t studied “Bull Durham”, otherwise he wouldn’t be giving the reporters quotes like that. I can only imagine what kind of crap he’s going to take in the locker room for that one.
He’s probably extremely self-conscious, as this quote indicates, like the supermodel that thinks she’s the ugliest girl in the room but then covers it up with false bravado (bitchiness) to give herself the aura that she’s better than everyone else. It is absolutely fascinating to see the inner workings of peoples’ minds.

Positive affirmations are a staple of modern athlete mental training,

How can the Twins not call up Liriano?
Francisco Liriano won his ninth straight decision Tuesday at Triple-A, throwing seven shutout innings while striking out 10.
He gave up just two hits and issued two walks. Liriano has allowed one earned run while fanning 42 batters over his last 35 innings, and is 9-2 with a 3.13 ERA at Triple-A overall. He’s clearly one of the Twins’ top dozen pitchers at this point, but the team seems unwilling to dump Livan Hernandez from the rotation and have sent mixed signals about using Liriano out of the bullpen. His agent filing a grievance against the team for alleging suppressing Liriano’s service time by keeping him in the minors has also upset Twins management, although their anger has seemingly been directed more at his agent.Source: Minneapolis Star-Tribune

He'll be called soon enough.
Jay for LGT wrote an excellent piece on the twinkie site about how wrong the agent was.

he’s got to get that control under wraps before they’ll call him up. they don’t want to lose their current impeccable standing as the team with the least walks issued.

by ballyb on Jul 23, 2008 10:02 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
i wouldn't categorize his progress as extreme.
the easy answer is that he’s always had decent enough stuff. his abilities are being magnified a good deal by some inordinate luck. his babip this year has been quite low, especially for the minors.

perhaps things are getting back to where most (all?) of us expected the defense to be prior to the season.
i.e., below average. the decline has been clear of late, certainly below average as you point out of late. could be just a poor spell. or it could just be what the team really is.

Lol. Bally part of this is the normal ebb and flow of a season
We established a long time ago this was not a “great” team so there will be some ups and downs. There are a few things that concern me but none so much that I feel like the team still isnt the favorite moving forward for the division. This is frankly the time where Kenny needs to step up and be the upper tier gm that a few people (Joe S from BP recently) seem to want to put him.
The 5th starter or Contreras’s spot. Lets see what Richard can do. I am not even opposed to giving Haegar a shot if need be. 4 solid starters is more than most in baseball and they still have the best rotation and bullpen in the division. There is still time to make a decision trade wise for a starter.
Masset. Simply must go. In general the Sox have seemed to have made progress in cutting dead weight. Ozzie even seems to be choosing his words carefully on PK and playing time. I think he gets it and thinks they can win and won’t be worried about hurt feelings.
The offense. Not better than Detroit’s but right now its damn good. They do have the occasional SSH jinx but overall things bode well even with the regression of the pitching. Sox faithful don’t want to hear it but unless PK improves soon they don’t need him.
I referenced the D above and my concerns there.
Minn will add Liriano but with more young pitching their innings are starting to mount. They also seem to be true Minny style and won’t trade for a needed bat (or at least the right one.)
Detroit has frankly always scared me more but even with all that’s happened over a month and half since June 1st they gained 1 whole game. The SP has been much better but they have bullpen concerns and not much they can do about.
In the end the division will come down to … division play. Overall the Sox seem to do that best (Thorton blown save aside). Calm your fears. It will be a bumpy ride but the Sox should prevail.
Also has any one noticed how close all the division races are besides the Angels.

perhaps the twins will make a move now. they have an offday with which to play with their rotation.
though if they do, i’d expect liriano to pitch sunday.

Does that mean it's "Tip Your Hat Day" at the park?
The first 6000 fans will receive White Sox hats suitable for tipping! White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano will hold an a special session for youngsters on how to correctly tip a hat.
Announcer: [A fan] from Frederick, Maryland, wants to know why you don't go out and get some more team speed.
Weaver: Team speed, for Chrissake, you get BLEEP god damn little fleas on the bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big BLEEP who can hit the BLEEP ball out of the BLEEP ballpark and you can't make any god damn mistakes.

Damn, I was up there for 4 years and never heard about that one
It would have been up there with Monster Jam (Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!) as the coolest events I attended at the Metrodome.

I yam what I yam.
But I was serious about the positive imagery/sports psychology thing. Knowing what I know today I would’ve attempted to use my schooling to focus on sports psychology and cracking the athlete market. Wha a blast to work with the pro ballplayers and (hopefully) help make a difference in their performance.

Matchup: Rangers (52-49) at White Sox (56-43), 1:05 p.m. CT
Probable Starters: Kevin Millwood (106 2/3 IP, 5.57 RA, 1.73 WHIP, 78 K) vs. Clayton Richard (121 2/3, 2.87, 0.91, 82—Double- and Triple-A)
Pythagorean Record: Texas, 47-54 (549 RS, 590 RA); Chicago, 58-41 (493 RS, 412 RA)
Hit List Rankings: Texas, #18; Chicago, #4
Prospectus: Sending a pitcher out to face the Rangers in his first major league start is an extremely dangerous proposition, but Richard has pitched well enough in the minors thus far to earn this chance, which comes due to the right elbow tendonitis of Jose Contreras. Up until today, the White Sox have needed just one spot start all season, which went to long reliever Nick Masset, and in replacing Contreras Chicago elected to call up the 24-year-old left-hander from Triple-A rather than go back to Masset. Entering this season Richard had not pitched above the High-A Carolina League in the three years since getting selected in the eighth round of the 2005 draft out of the University of Michigan, and consequently he was left off the White Sox Top 11 Prospects list and not issued a PECOTA projection. Promoted to Double-A Birmingham to open the year, Richard was excellent, posting a 3.12 RA in 13 starts over 83 2/3 innings. That earned him a bump up to Charlotte, where he won his first six starts while allowing less than a baserunner per inning. Richard’s progression has been due primarily to the betterment of his control: last season he had a 3.3 BB/9 for Winston-Salem, but this year issued only 20 walks in 112 2/3 innings, or 1.5 BB/9. His performance is somewhat deceiving given the depressed run-scoring environment of the Southern League, as Richard’s equivalent ERA at Birmingham was 4.42. He did put up a 3.16 equivalent ERA at Charlotte, however, and has given up just four home runs all year, so his breakthrough season certainly has merit.
Furthermore, throwing a lefty against Texas has been the way to go this year, as Mark Buehrle proved again last night: the Rangers are the only team in baseball with an OPS north of 800 versus right-handers (824), but fall into the middle of the field with a 750 mark against southpaws. In games versus left-handed starters, Texas is 11-20 (.355 winning percentage), compared with 41-29 versus righties (.586). One of the few Rangers batters who has performed better against left-handers is rookie first baseman Chris Davis, who homered last night off Buehrle and already has five extra-base hits in 26 plate appearances against southpaws, notable considering that Davis is himself a lefty. In his minor league career, however, Davis actually put up a nearly identical OPS versus lefties and righties (.315/.378/.573 in 275 PA versus .299/.351/.602 in 873, respectively).

Clay has got to throw strikes.
He starts putting men on base and all that above goes right out the window. I hope Ozzie gets that point across.
