From MLBTradeRumors...
The White Sox explored a scenario where they would’ve acquired Brian Roberts from Baltimore, traded Orlando Cabrera to the Dodgers, and moved Alexei Ramirez to shortstop. That obviously didn’t work out. The Sox may be currently trying to decide whether to part with third baseman Josh Fields, their best trade chip and third baseman of the future.
What a sweet trade that would have been. ; (
by SSH2005 on Jul 23, 2008 12:40 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Oh my...
I’d blow my proverbial load. Cabrera is great defensively, but I can’t imagine a better scenario at the deadline.
by Craig Grebeck on Jul 23, 2008 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll take the 2 draft picks over Roberts
Roberts/Aram over Aram/Ocab wouldn’t have been that much of an upgrade. Trading Fields wouldn’t seem to make much sense with Crede seemingly out of the picture next year and no other good options.
Or maybe Uribe is the 3B of the future, god would that be horrible.
by madvillian on Jul 23, 2008 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
you'd still get the two picks, just in 2010.
i’m not sure i see that as being such a great improvement, considering what the sox would have been giving up to get it done. just get roberts. giving up cabrera in such a deal is beyond me.
by larry on Jul 23, 2008 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Would Sherril have been involved? I’d think the Sox probably had something else going to Baltimore for Sherril if that deal is to be believed. I guess Roberts fits Ozzie’s profile of the lead off guy better, and who knows how well OCab is getting along with teammates or what Ozzie actually thinks of him.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 23, 2008 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
one of the things people seem to fail to pay attention to is the dugout.
of course, people are all over it when dye says something to cabrera. watch the rest of the time. i don’t think cabrera is having trouble with his teammates.
by larry on Jul 23, 2008 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, he does his hand-jives with Swisher...
and Swisher is probably the most well-liked guy on the team.
And the Sox probably need a righty reliever, not a lefty like Sherrill… not that I would turn the guy away.

I don't disagree
But there has been plenty said about the guy in the papers.. to me it seems like he gets along with people, but it’s not like they are going to act otherwise. It’s just another possible reason they move him that’s all.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 23, 2008 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Roberts is having a good season, maybe it would be worth to make another run at the title
Now that the Sox have proven to a good team, an incremental upgrade might put them over the top, whereas before it looked ilke an incremental upgrade might push them over .500, or to .500.

nate stealing my lines.
Sky (The Roc, NY): How worried should the White Sox be about their over-achieving pitching staff? Somewhat worried or the-crap-is-about-to-hit-the-fan worried?
Nate Silver: Well, I think Gavin Floyd is going to turn into a pumpkin at some point. And who knows what you’re going to get out of Jose Contreras. But Danks, Buehrle and Vazquez ought to be solid - and Vazquez has UNDERachieved - and I like this Clayton Richard kid they’re calling up to be a reasonable #4 his first time around the league.

If he is a solid number 4 for the rest of the year that would be a huge boost
That would mean a solid 1-5 in the rotation. I just hope that if Richards pitches well then Ozzie doesn’t let his friendship with Count get in teh way of making the right move for the team, even if that means Count is the odd man out.

has there been any evidence ‘friendships’ have influenced ozzie’s judgements in the past? ozzie puts forth a team first attitude imo

Gavin Floyd
I’ve yet to read any assessment that thinks he won’t “turn into a pumpkin”. But there are varying degrees of pumpkiness, and if Floyd’s is simply a Paul Byrdesque 5.10 ERA from here on out, he’s still a useful pitcher. So, I wonder how much of a pumpkin people think he’ll be….
Announcer: [A fan] from Frederick, Maryland, wants to know why you don't go out and get some more team speed.
Weaver: Team speed, for Chrissake, you get BLEEP god damn little fleas on the bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big BLEEP who can hit the BLEEP ball out of the BLEEP ballpark and you can't make any god damn mistakes.

Why would they consider moving Ramirez to SS this late in the season? Could they really afford OJT now? I know Uribe could play there if ARam fialed, but what’s the point?

Well, it is, but he has a cannon, covers a decent amount of range,
and is quite instinctual. Some of the “field general” dearth of knowledge he exhibits at 2B would concern me more at SS. But he’s headed there anyway, it sounds.
