by madvillian on Jul 23, 2008 4:37 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs

He was a catcher with the Orioles back in the day. Sorry looking (expletive). My brother had his card. He looked like this little kid who got left at a bus station by his parents. You know why? Because he had to catch Hoyt Wilhelms knuckle ball five (expletive) years.

by larry on Jul 23, 2008 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
haha
so i googled it, because i’m not lazy for once, so:
IsoD equals OBP minus AVG
ISO = (2B + (3B2) + (HR3)) / AB
so for IsoD, it means that OBP is pretty fucking high. not sure what to make of the ISO and how it relates to IsoD
He was a catcher with the Orioles back in the day. Sorry looking (expletive). My brother had his card. He looked like this little kid who got left at a bus station by his parents. You know why? Because he had to catch Hoyt Wilhelms knuckle ball five (expletive) years.

i've never seen that definition of ISO, btw
i don’t know why you would weight triples like that, either. a triple is basically a double plus some speed and luck. no reason to weight that when you’re assessing pure power. in fact it makes more sense to count triples as doubles.

by larry on Jul 23, 2008 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sure
IsoD is a good way to determine how patient (as well as how many times he gets plunked in Q’s case) a hitter is and ISO is a good method to determine how much raw power a guy has.
ISO is just SLG minus AVG (filters out the singles) and ISOD is just OBP minus AVG (filters out the hits as part of OBP)
Average relies on quite a bit of variance (read: luck) from year to year, but a guy with a .300 ISO and a .100 IsoD is just a damn good hitter who is patient and drives the baseball hard and far.

.300 ISO is basically the pinnacle of power
there were just 4 in all of MLB who posted that over a full season in 2007, 9 in 2006 and 4 in 2005. Q is currently 16th among those qualified according to fangraphs with .257. That’s as of yesterday. 2 bombs in one game is going to help that figure. It’ll probably be enough to pass Mike Jacobs for 15th. Q, as of now, has well above average power.

more IsoD
spreadsheet sorted by IsoD. i got the group of 35 by first sorting fangraphs the last 3 calendar years, then sorting by best OBP. so those are the best OBPers over the last three seasons with their accompanying IsoD.

Listen to this
“The White Sox explored a scenario where they would’ve acquired Brian Roberts from Baltimore, traded Orlando Cabrera to the Dodgers, and moved Alexei Ramirez to shortstop. That obviously didn’t work out. The Sox may be currently trying to decide whether to part with third baseman Josh Fields, their best trade chip and third baseman of the future.” – Robothal
I can’t decide whether I like the idea of moving OCab. As much as he stirs the pot he can beat you in a lot of ways. Brian Roberts would be a very welcome addition… and if I am not mistaken he is not a free agent until the end of next year. As much as I love OC I am debating with myself over who I would rather have. Thoughts?

In the top of the 8th inning, I yelled to my disinterested co-workers:
“This is not right. The Sox NEVER lose on my birthday!”
Then I turned off the game to get some work done so I could actually leave on time and enjoy my existence.
And what do you know! That team, oozing with sucktitude of late, pulls a win out of their asses.
Q!nicorn heard me. And he stuck his twisted magical horn into the Rangers, until their blood coated the diamond; and turned it into a ruby.
(Colin or Wiz, can you do your search thing and find out how many July 23rd games they’ve lost in the last 15 years? Because I may be wrong about them NEVER losing on my bday, but I’m sure some years are hazier than others…heh).

Thanks for finding!
So, in reality, they mostly just lose. Boy am I glad I became of drinking age, so I could just think we are winning all the time.

This site is going straight to hell in a handbasket
Site value < $50K. Trend is down:
1. No Cheat.
2. No recaps. Ever. Again.
3. Nazi Photoshops.
4. larry bored, starting his own “cool” site. By selected invitation only. You may not participate. Ever. Stop crying. Now.
5. Toonder pissed, still carping about a game near last week and McCain/CBS. Has become irrelevant and bitter.
6. kenwo more insightful than Tdogg.
7. bhoov no longer doing research.
8. Chiburb and family becoming fossilized by age. Arthritic fingers and narcolepsy affecting their posts.
9. SSH starting to make sense.
10. Wiz thinking of moving to the 1st floor – has heard about concepts “sunlight” and “pay”, wants what’s his.
All downhill from here.

And now, as of Wiz' 9:31 EST post, the denouement:
11. Wiz arrested, SSS site shut down for copyright violations.

We've had more Wire threads than recaps it seems
Dammit I want my Sox games to be tidied up in a neat package every night. This is by far the worst site on the internet, I vote to move game threads to lemonparty.
I was a multiple time all star throughout my little league career. Won 5 championships- 4 in a row- thats more in a row than MJ… (kenwo4life@aol.com)

FWIW
PECOTA’s 90th percentile performance:
-IsoP: .209
-IsoD: .089
75th:
IsoP: .190
IsoD: .087
50th:
IsoP: .171
IsoD: .085
It looks like PECOTA has a solid understanding of Q!’s on base skills, but underestimated his power substantially.
are you trying to use stats around here? what the fuck do you think this is? - MM
