Red Sox looking to acquire Uribe in deal with Chicago...
CBSSports.com Danny Knobler wrote:
The Red Sox are deep in conversations with the White Sox on a trade that would send infielder Juan Uribe to Boston, according to sources.Uribe is batting just .225 in limited playing time this season, but his three home runs are one more than all Red Sox shortstops have hit. Boston shortstops are 28th in the majors in runs scored and 23rd in RBI.
It’s not clear who the White Sox would get in return for Uribe, but one possibility is Alex Cora, the utility infielder who has fallen out of favor in Boston. Cora’s brother, Joey, is the White Sox’s bench coach.
The White Sox want to rid themselves of Uribe’s $4.5 million contract, perhaps in hopes of rekindling talks with Baltimore about second baseman Brian Roberts. If the White Sox could acquire Roberts, or another second baseman, they could shift Alexei Ramirez to shortstop and trade Orlando Cabrera, possibly to the Dodgers.
The possibility of trading for Roberts and then dealing Cabrera was first reported by FoxSports.com.
Chicago is still looking for a starting pitcher to replace injured Jose Contreras. They could try to deal Cabrera for Derek Lowe, although the Dodgers don’t have much depth in their rotation and would be hesitant to part with him.

I'm wondering
what you see as the advantages of a Roberts-Ramirez DP combo over a Ramirez-Cabrera one, both in the short term and long term. I just don’t have any sense on this one.
by VAChisox on Jul 24, 2008 7:58 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Short-term: around .200 more points of OPS in the Sox lineup...
Long-term: the Sox would have Roberts at 2B for 2009 as well while Cabrera is an impending free agent. The Sox could either trade Roberts at the deadline next year or just collect picks for him when he leaves via free agency. And then, Gordon Beckham is ushered in to the starting 2B job.
This is all assuming that Kenny and the Sox know their players and are sure that Alexei Ramirez can do a good job defensively at SS.
by SSH2005 on Jul 24, 2008 8:06 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Just curious.
Seeing that the Cubs (lots of young talent) were rebuffed in efforts to get Roberts, realistically what package can the Sox offer to get him?
Pitching, defense and health.
by ballyb on Jul 24, 2008 8:19 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Cubs really don't have much young talent at all
I’m sure Vitters is off limits and outside of him, even before the Harden deal, they had a number of meh parts. Josh Fields is probably an average third baseman in 2010 and a far better one than Melvin Mora right now. He’d have huge appeal for the O’s.

by colintj on Jul 24, 2008 8:30 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, the Orioles would definitely want Fields...
If Kenny is willing to give up Fields, maybe he expands the deal and throws in more prospect(s) to get Roberts + Daniel Cabrera or Roberts + Sherrill?
by SSH2005 on Jul 24, 2008 8:38 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
From what I've read, Sherrill is going nowhere
But I don’t see Fields and Poreda yielding much beyond Roberts unless ditching Cabrera is salary dump, but that seems at least somewhat unlikely. Not to mention the O’s lose the possible B compensation, though I’m sure they have a far better grasp on such things than I do. Allen doesn’t have the pedigree and Shelby has lost his sheen. Who else? Jose Martinez? Is he off the DL yet?
What I take from this is how ballsy KW is. Willing to flip your starting short stop in the middle of a season? Damn son. Cojones = grande.

Well
If we are sending OCab to the Dodgers, the Orioles are probably taking the Dodgers prospects, not ours. Our prospects are garbage.
If we got both Lowe and Roberts I think KW has done well.

I realize that...
But if the Dodgers prospect(s) aren’t enough for Baltimore, Kenny would probably throw in one of his own to add to the package.

by ballyb on Jul 24, 2008 8:41 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Orioles had no use for Felix Pie...
Their outfield is set with Luke Scott in LF, Adam Jones in CF, and Nick Markakis in RF. The Orioles would have wanted Gallagher but Hendry wasn’t willing to give him up at the time. Once the Brewers traded for Sabathia, Hendry gave in. Also, I doubt the Orioles would have been interested in Donald Veal after seeing how control issues can hamper a pitcher’s production (Daniel Cabrera) but who knows.
by SSH2005 on Jul 24, 2008 8:48 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Disagree
I meant to say “position prospects” and to that extent I’ll grant it might be a little early, but pretty much no one likes the Cubs system. Pie’s star has dimmed in the extreme (.268/.316/.455 in AAA), Vitters (as mentioned) isn’t on the table, Patterson is somewhat popless and somewhat position-less. Veal isn’t showing strike outs or control right now and his K/BB is right in line with his previous turn at AA. That doesn’t scream “progress”. None of these players plug a hole the way Josh Fields does.

That's why I don't see this trade happening...
but I guess it could be Cabrera to the Dodgers for prospect(s), which they have plenty of. Then, Kenny sends the Dodgers’ prospect(s), along with some prospect(s) from the Sox to the Orioles for Roberts. Who knows, maybe Clayton Richard tears up the Twins in his next start and the Sox throw him in the deal since Contreras will be back after that? Unfortunately, I think the Orioles would want Josh Fields. Mora is old and sucky these days.
by SSH2005 on Jul 24, 2008 8:32 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Roberts is supposedly Angelos' favorite player.
Fields and Poreda would have to be in the package, but with neither lighting up the minors it would have to take more, which means something off the Sox major league roster (Floyd?). It sounds like the Ocab trade was contingent on the Sox trading for Roberts, rather than being a 3-way trade. So I would guess that the Sox wanted to recover talent at the position they traded from (maybe OCab for LaRoche to cover the loss of Fields?)
I can’t believe the O’s would trade Roberts to the Sox without demanding Alexei Ramirez. He’s cheap and appears to be able to play their position of greatest organizational need. Maybe that’s why the trade didn’t go down.

3-way trade...
Kenny trades Orlando Cabrera to the Dodgers for prospect(s) since they need a SS. Then, Kenny trades the Dodgers prospect(s) and some Sox prospect(s) to the Orioles for Brian Roberts. Alexei Ramirez takes over at SS.

Dodgers interest in a SS...
The Dodgers, needing a shortstop and late-inning reliever, talked with the Nationals about both Cristian Guzman and Jon Rauch, but wouldn’t part with Class AA shortstop Ivan DeJesus Jr. in a deal for Guzman, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions. The Nats instead signed Guzman to a two-year, $16 million extension and completed the Rauch-for-Bonifacio deal with the Diamondbacks, the Dodgers’ principal NL West rival . . .
1.) Orlando Cabrera and Mike MacDougal to the Dodgers for prospect(s).
2.) Dodgers prospect(s) + White Sox prospect(s) [ if necessary ] to the Orioles for Brian Roberts.
The Dodgers did trade for Angel Berroa while he was playing for the Royals’ AAA team. Maybe they would consider MacDougal?

The way the article was written, the Dodgers deal was contingent on O's trade happening
It wasn’t like they were negotiating a 3-way deal to ship LAD prosects for Roberts. So, what I imagine happened:
1) The Sox want to trade Fields + Poreda for Roberts
2) The Sox want to replace Fields with LaRoche as 3B for next season by trading OCab for him.
But the O’s want way more than Fields and Poreda for Roberts—in particular they would want Ramirez and the Sox won’t do that…..

Mark Gonzales backs up the Sox interest in Alex Cora...
Mark Gonzales at 8:17 P.M. today wrote:
Two months ago, speculation surfaced that Boston infielder Alex Cora could be available. But for the Sox to become interested, they would have to move Juan Uribe, who has hit three doubles in his past two games subbing for third baseman Joe Crede, who is nursing a stiff back.Cora is playing behind Jed Lowrie at shortstop and Dustin Pedroia at second while shortstop Julio Lugo recovers from a leg injury.
Uribe committed a throwing error in the first inning. The Sox elected to keep Uribe over Pablo Ozuna when they made room for Paul Konerko to come off the 15-day disabled list. Uribe reiterated he wants to stay with the Sox.
“I want to play but I don’t want anyone hurt so I can play,” Uribe said. “[Crede] is a good guy and on the team. I want to help the team. If they give me a chance, that’s what I want to do.”
Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. But I have to believe that trading Uribe for Cora is mostly about the salary dump so the money can be used to acquire another player (Roberts?).
by SSH2005 on Jul 23, 2008 9:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Honest question
If Juanito is gone, who backs up crede at third? If cora can play third, how much of a defensive downgrade, if at all, is he from juan playing there. Lord knows we were really kicking it around out there today, and there may be a mutiny by the pitching staff if we downgrade yet another defensive position if only part time. . .

ozzie on richard
“Awesome,’’ Guillen said. “Great job. He’s going to pitch against Minnesota (on Tuesday). I like what I saw. He gave up a home run (to Michael Young in the first inning) and went right after people. We didn’t help him at all the way we should defensively. I like what I saw. He threw strikes and he’s not afraid.’‘http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=223085Richard worked at a rapid pace, a la Mark Buehrle, and he mixed in effective change-ups and curveballs with a fastball that reached 95 mph.
All in all, the 24-year-old lefty was pleased with his first outing.
“It’s not exactly how I envisioned it,’’ Richard said after piling up 7 strikeouts and just 1 walk. “But that’s baseball. That’s how things go. I threw strikes and I know that was a big deal going in. I didn’t want to walk guys. Get that first one out of the way, and we got the win, which is huge. It was a great win.’‘

Where did Richard pull out the 95 MPH gas from?
I thought he was supposed to top out at around 91 MPH?

i believe he generated it by using his arm and windup to its fullest...
or he just pulled it out of his ass
Please handcuff this jerk to the bench and never let him out unless its the 19th inning or you are up or down by 10. Go get Damaso Marte and admit your mistake you stubborn **.-kenwo on boone logan

He was clearly jacked up for the start
Prolly putting a bit more on it as a result. I like what I saw as well. 7K in a short start against a powerful (although less against LHP) lineup isn’t bad.
If he can just be a decent 4th/5th starter I’ll be happy and the team will get a nice boost. Count should be put out to pasture, although his contract will probably prevent any drastic moves with him.

With Don Coopers help, you too can learn the art of the cutter.
For your tapes(yes tapes) call in now. And for a limited time only you will a receive a Juan Uribe bobble head.

i was flicking around his gameday
and it looks like he’s got a fastball that he just unleashes from time to time, but mostly works with the sinker. He was mostly 89-92 on there.
are you trying to use stats around here? what the fuck do you think this is? - MM

I also liked what I saw
I’d guess that he won’t be able to sit in the mid-90s that we saw today, but even so he was relatively impressive. He used his fastball both in and out and it appears that he has a good changeup (or two-seamer? The pitch didn’t look slow enough to be a changeup, but rather it looked like him just taking something off his fastball or putting some sink on it.). I didn’t see much consistency in a breaking pitch, but I’m fairly sure he was attempting to throw either a slider or a curve. Furthermore, he was halfway decent with guys on base. He’s got that high leg-kick that is tough for runners on first to read, and he also used a slide-step from time to time which worked well.
Overall I’m perfectly fine with him taking the ball next Tuesday (or, put another way, with him as the sixth starter).

I read the "Rating Ozzie's Most Memorable Blowups" article on ESPN.com
about 30 minutes before he went off on Drake. Today’s argument began with top 10 potential, but I was left disappointed (nothing thrown or broken).
Has it always been an automatic toss for arguing balls and strikes, or was this made a rule sometime in the last few years?

I was most impressed with his third K of Hamilton
He was on the ropes in a big way at that point with Kinsler and Young on second and third. He had given up 4 straight hits at that point, but threw three good breaking pitches (2 curves and a slider), only one of which was a strike and struck him out swinging. I was fearing home run massive melt down at that point.

White Sox interested in Mariners' Jarrod Washburn?
The Yankees, Cardinals, White Sox and maybe even the Brewers are among the clubs believed to have talked to the Mariners about Washburn, who has a 2.65 ERA over his past eight starts, even if his record during that span is just 2-2 because of meager offensive support.
Washburn holds the trump card - the right to veto a trade to the Yankees - although he can’t veto a trade to the Cardinals or White Sox.

No thanks.
I’d rather fly with Richard instead. I think KW should probably focus on bullpen help. And Im not use to the White Sox being included as a can’t veto team.

I'm sorry if this is corn but it made me laugh
CHICAGO—Still fuming after his team blew a late-inning lead in a loss to the Rays Sunday, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen filled out Tuesday night’s lineup card with a series of expletives, insults, and personal attacks on his players. The lineup card, posted in the dugout at approximately 6 p.m., referred to the team as the “Chicago Shit Sox,” and read in part, “1. Orlando Fucking Cabrera, 2. Goddamn Motherfucking Neckless Bastard A.J. Shitbag Pierzynski DUMB!!! FUCK!!!, 3. Jermaine Fucking Gonna Dye Fucking Shit 0-For-5 Shitfuck Fuck Fucking Fucknuts Asshole Just Try Me Motherfucker.” Guillen also announced that Nick Shitlicker [Swisher] would be starting in centerfield and Jim Thome would be the “designated fuckface.” Upon noticing that “Cocksucking Assbag Motherfucking Shitfucking Numbnuts Fuckhole” was penciled into the No. 4 spot, Paul Konerko expressed delight that he was batting cleanup.

from the onion?
He was a catcher with the Orioles back in the day. Sorry looking (expletive). My brother had his card. He looked like this little kid who got left at a bus station by his parents. You know why? Because he had to catch Hoyt Wilhelms knuckle ball five (expletive) years.

More Alex Cora to the White Sox rumor...
Francona elected to keep Jed Lowrie at short instead of Alex Cora, who might have expected to play a day game after Lowrie played the night before. The manager has started Lowrie in five straight games and praised the way he has performed. He’s batting .333 (6 for 18) with three RBIs and has played well in the field. Cora professed no knowledge of rumors swirling around him yesterday that he was headed to the White Sox. “If it was happening, I would know about it,” he said.

Eddie Bajek, who runs the blog Detroit Tigers Thoughts, has come tantalizingly close to cracking the code behind the Elias Sports Bureau ranking system.
