The Red Sox are deep in conversations with the White Sox on a trade that would send infielder Juan Uribe to Boston, according to sources.

Uribe is batting just .225 in limited playing time this season, but his three home runs are one more than all Red Sox shortstops have hit. Boston shortstops are 28th in the majors in runs scored and 23rd in RBI.

It's not clear who the White Sox would get in return for Uribe, but one possibility is Alex Cora, the utility infielder who has fallen out of favor in Boston. Cora's brother, Joey, is the White Sox's bench coach.

The White Sox want to rid themselves of Uribe's $4.5 million contract, perhaps in hopes of rekindling talks with Baltimore about second baseman Brian Roberts. If the White Sox could acquire Roberts, or another second baseman, they could shift Alexei Ramirez to shortstop and trade Orlando Cabrera, possibly to the Dodgers.

The possibility of trading for Roberts and then dealing Cabrera was first reported by FoxSports.com.

Chicago is still looking for a starting pitcher to replace injured Jose Contreras. They could try to deal Cabrera for Derek Lowe, although the Dodgers don't have much depth in their rotation and would be hesitant to part with him.

Knobler says the return is unclear but the White Sox want to shed Uribe’s salary. Uribe has about $1.7MM left on his contract this year. Uribe’s White Sox career has been on life support several times this year, but he’s managed to stick around. With Joe Crede’s back ailing, Uribe is currently filling in at third base

wow. that is a lot of possibilities and speculation. i would say it is highly unlikely that any one of those scenarios plays out.

though i do enjoy the far-fetched but lucrative trade rumors.

fuck you, that's my name!! you know why, mister? 'cause you drove a hyundai to get here tonight, I drove a eighty thousand dollar bmw. that's my name!!

I actually buy into this rumor...

just because we have heard nothing about the Red Sox being interested in Uribe until now. All we knew about was the Orioles and the Dodgers. And it sounds like Julio Lugo’s injury is pretty severe and he is expected to miss four to six weeks. So they want a backup infielder for Jed Lowrie with more pop than Alex Cora, in case Lowrie starts to struggle, and the backup needs to take over at SS.

wow

So…Uribe goes to the Red Sox…and a 3 team deal with Cabrera and Roberts?

That would be cool, but doubtful. Isn’t roberts under contract until the end of 09? It would give us more time to wait on Beckham.

While I can see Uribe to the Red Sox happening...

I would be shocked if Kenny manages to swing a three team trade with the Orioles and Dodgers for Brian Roberts using Cabrera and possibly prospects. Kenny probably just wants to dump Uribe’s $1.7 million dollars so he can add a righty reliever at the deadline with that money.

But if Kenny manages to acquire Brian Roberts for Cabrera and prospect(s) from the Dodgers, it would be a pretty impressive coup and would greatly improve the Sox offense (probably by around .200 points of OPS).

Funniest thing I've heard in a long time...

trading Juan Uribe is the precursor to the Sox also dealing Cabrera and ending up with Brian Roberts and Derek Lowe.

Yeah. Ok.

Sounds like this trade ain't happening...

While the Red Sox examined whether to pursue White Sox shortstop Juan Uribe, major league sources indicate the team backed away from a possible deal to acquire him.

The Red Sox really like the job done by Jed Lowrie and feel that Alex Cora can be an adequate backup to Lowrie until Julio Lugo returns to the seen sometime in mid-August. That’s not to say the Sox won’t consider another veteran shortstop if the fit and price is right.
