Funny you bring up Harris

I was at a Nationals vs. Giants night game last week where Peapod cranked a home run to right field, not an easy feat by any means. I remarked to my friend that I’ll always like that guy because he scored the winning run in game 4 of the 2005 WS.

That was a really odd game, actually. The fan that caught Peapod’s HR ball threw it back onto the field, only this dude had a cannon for an arm and one-hopped it to the second baseman on a rope. Another dude in the second deck made an out-stretched dive for a line drive foul ball, completely crushing his entire right side on the 5 seats next to him as the ball glanced off his finger tips. He had to be feeling that the next morning. Good times.

I had a weird love for players

especially pitchers.
1. Damaso Marte. I loved the way he would lean over and just let his left arm dangle as he went threw the signs. he just looked so badass. I’m a righty, and i always would immitate that stance and pitching motion. also, he was awesome in 2003.

2. Esteban Loaiza. that cutter in on leftys was a great pleasure of mine.

3. Jon Garland. My one great lasting memory of 2005 was him pitching against baltimore with men on and two outs in the 8th, and in like a 7 pitch at bat he strikes out miguel tejada. When i think ‘why do i love the sox’ that’s the image that comes up

4. Kenny Lofton. The only sox jersey with a name and number i own is kenny loftons from that half season in 2003.

and then i liked frank and buerhle and Q! and konerko and bobby and magglio but they simply aren’t as interesting.

I also really liked tom ‘flash’ gordon and kelly wunsch for some reason too.

I guess i just really loved that 2003 season

No Legend?!?!?

For all the joking about him done around here, I’m shocked he hasn’t made an appearance on anybody’s list yet. He’s definitely the starting centerfielder on my all-time favorite Sox team.

Other favorites of mine yet to be mentioned: Ivan Calderon (I used to chant “C’mon Ivan!” whenever he was up when I was a kid); Dan Pasqua, for being a stoner and for breaking up Todd Stottlemyre’s no-hitter in the 8th inning of a miserable night at the ballpark; “Rad” and “The Pope” out of the pen; “The Deacon,” for raking off the bench; Gary Redus, for the week he hit two grand slams; and Wilson Alvarez, for the first no-hitter I ever saw.

Old guy's list

1. Dick Allen – head and shoulders the most exciting player eva for his time.
2. Richie Zisk – just for the SS Hitmen. Greatest rental eva.
3. Robin Ventura – classy, one of the first players with some Q – rating who came via draft.
4. Ozzie Guillen – even as a player I loved to watch/listen.
5. Luis Aparicio – I played short to be like him.
6. Ralph “Beep-Beep” Garr- funniest Sox player ever without trying to be.
7. Walt “No-Neck” Williams – first player I ever met, and one of the best nicknames.
8. Bee-Bee Richards – I have no idea, just reminds me of the era where they sucked horrible (we never quit).
9. Harold Baines – obvious.
10. Jermaine Dye – for his WS RBI, and last night’s catch.

The Butkus year - time to knock everyone on their ass.

by winningugly on Jul 24, 2008 3:43 PM CDT   0 recs

Glad you noted Ozzie.

That’s the one I thought the lists were lacking.
He was one of the first players I really loved, and at a very young age.
My dad can attest- we had a Sox troll doll for years and years and years propped in his car, as the “protector” of the vehicle. We named him Ozzie.
And he took care of the Hyundai.

Little did I know back then, that nobody wanted to break into a Hyundai.

Great List

No neck remains the only Sox player I ever met. He had dinner at our house when I was a wee lad in 1970 or 1971. My Virginia license plate is Chisox 3 in honor of Walt (but a nod to Baines as well). Bee Bee Richards brings back a flood of memories. I remember my older brother imitating play-by-play with “ground ball to Bee Bee, oh no, he throws it into the stands.” Thanks for putting Garr on there as well.

1977 being the first year I followed the Sox,

my faves were the marginally-talented, Scandinavian boys Eric Soderholm and Wayne O. Nordhagen. Mostly because that’s what I was/am.

I loved Nordhagen for being a C/OF. A combo you don’t see anymore. Although he was the WORST catcher. Nine errors and 8 passed balls in 150 career innings behind the dish…

I'm like a laser, six-string razor. I've got a mouth like an alligator

by Nordhagen on Jul 24, 2008 4:12 PM CDT   0 recs

Agree with Eric

but I didn’t want to list too many from the ‘70’s. Luzinski and Dotson were faves, too. Tough to narrow it down to 10 for me.

Ozzie

I became a Sox fan in the late 80’s and he became my favorite. He just always seemed to be having so much fun out there. And I’ve got a thing for infield defense. When it’s good it’s simply amazing.
Second fave is Frank, of course. I remember being amazed at just how big he was when he first started. Looked like a man among boys.

Jose

Absolutely my Sox mancrush.

Things got good the second we traded for him and got bad again the second we moved him off SS for Clayton. He really couldn’t bat right handed to save his life, but he was a great guy to have on the team and he saved his best for the Cubs. His mocking of Sosa’s finger kissing routine was wonderful.

FWIW I saw a #44 jersey at the game on Saturday...

...but it was an Anderson jersey. I’ve held off buying a jersey for fear the player will soon after be traded. I suppose it’s a better fate that the player changes his number.

by KenBrett34 on Jul 24, 2008 6:29 PM CDT   0 recs

I've seen that guy too

at least I hope there’s only one guy with that jersey.

If Majestic figured out a way to have replaceable numbers/names that didn’t look velcroed on, or didn’t leave holes, they’d sell a bunch, I bet.

Although Swisher is a safe jersey to get. He’s not going anywhere, and he’s pretty married to #30. One is the loneliest number, but 30 is the dirtiest.

I believe it was during Wednesday's game,...

...while Quentin was walking back to the dugout after his second home run, a guy was shown in the stands holding out his #20 jersey—with “Garland” taped out and, presumably, “Quentin” written over it.

Of interest to no one, I was spacing out at the beginning of Saturday’s game, sitting in my right-field seat, when I looked at the mound and shuddered, “Oh, crap! Garcia’s pitching!” Wrong #34.

Here we go

1. El Duque
2. #35

Ordering the rest would be pointless, but I’ve had fond memories of Damaso Marte, Willie Harris and Jon Garland. If I was born a few years earlier, I think I would’ve loved Albert Belle, too. It must’ve been amazing to see Belle go off for a .387/.451/.816 line in the second half of 1998…

This current group we have is pretty likeable. Vazquez, Dotel (for three reasons… lots of Ks, his duck walk and the high black socks), Alexei (my Che Alexei shirt should be coming in the next few days—thanks Jim) and obviously Q (among others) are my current favorites, and those four probably don’t rank too far behind the non-Duque/Big Hurt names.

by CWSKeith on Jul 25, 2008 1:50 AM CDT   0 recs

I was pissed when Belle left for the Orioles...

I thought it was so stupid for the Sox to give him an out clause in his contract. It was insane to see someone actually out-hit Frank for once. Belle’s season in 1998 could be the best offensive season by a Sox player in franchise history.

by SSH2005 on Jul 25, 2008 3:37 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Belle for Sosa is still my favorite trade everrrrrr.

I often wonder what the 90’s would have been like if we had Sosa…his game just isn’t our style and I don’t think I would have liked him any more had he been a Sock.

No, that is not what I meant! – I mean, I enjoy that the Sox put value into the team as a whole entity. Sosa WAS the Cubs. Even when Frank was dominating, there were other stand-out players.

I wouldn’t enjoy to have Bonds, Sosa, that red-headed ‘roid beast, etc, play for our team. Egos annoy me.

So I would prefer a bunch of guys who could pull some small hits together at the right time, over a guy who stands up and swings for the fences every single at-bat.

Too many to choose from...

A short list…

Ed Walsh & Ray Schalk (very old school grinders)

Fox , Aparicio and Pierce (1950s grinders)

Dick Allen (he’d hit a dinger and go back and smoke in the dugout)

Kittle (rooftop dingers!)

LaMarr Hoyt

Wilbur Wood

Richie Zisk

Jose Valentin (always gave 100% and looks like Freddie Mercury)

Ozzie (took us to The Promised Land and, IMO, is likely to be the face of the franchise long after he’s done as manager – the next Minnie Minoso, if you will)

Bo Jackson (looked so damn good in the uniform)

Mike Squires (only because I got to play against him in a softball game. The balls he hit are still traveling somewhere over Park Forest)

JD (quiet, unassuming, and can kick your ass)

Paulie (regardless if he doesn’t get another hit all year – he hit a friggin grand slam in the World Series for chissakes!)

Everyone who contributed in 2005 (including TIMO…Yeeeeeeees!)
