But I don’t see it. Why do you believe he’s “just been off for a little bit” instead of “he’s not very good.” My concern is that his all-or-nothing plate approach means he is likely to be exposed by good pitching and that his defense has never been very good. Hence, not a very good player.

indeed.
this is the real test of the sox. they’re basically at the limits of their depth now. fields is up. that’s the sox’ one position prospect (if that word may still be used re: fields) who can actually provide good production. richard, though we didn’t know it before the season started (we would have guessed the player would have been egbert or broadway), is about the only pitcher who looks like he could provide decent, non-2004 style fill in help (and the jury, at least for me, is still out on him). the sox can attribute a lot of their success in the first half of the season or so to being healthy. now they’re not. two key cogs are missing. they’re stretched to the limit. should be interesting to see if they can keep things together.

where the pitching is hanging by a thread, the defense is shaky, and there’s no hitting strategy at the plate. We’ve seen a lot of these this year. I have to listen to the Tiger announcers because Direct TV doesn’t pick up WCIU feed; they are saying a lot of good things about Floyd (being nice) but are looking to give him his first start in which he gives up more than 10 hits.

has he looked mediocre but ends up giving up only one or two earned runs (but several unearned). Does the defense play particularly poor behind him, or is he just less effective at pitching around bad defense?
Offense needs to wake up, but I just don’t see it coming. It seems that they get into this pattern of not doing much early leads to the inability to get something going late. Can they reverse the pattern tonight?
