Recap 7/25 Sox/Tigers
Well another win comes from nowhere. Just when you think that the lead could be down to 1 1/2 games...the Indians hold on and Jermaine Dye lifts the Sox over the Tigers 6-5 with a 2 out 2 run homer to right field off Todd Jones. It's great to see them come back and win against closers two games in a row. Bobby Jenks went three up three down in the ninth while D.J. Carrasco picked up the win in relief throwing 2/3 scoreless. Now onto more points.
Gavin Floyd wasn't terrible...he wasn't great either (4 R, 3 ER in 6 IP). The numbers I don't like from Gavin are the 3 walks and 9 base hits. His curveball must be established early IN the strikezone and then he can through it down in the dirt later. The third inning is what did in Gavin tonight. walk and single to granderson and polanco to start it off...then ordonez and cabrera with back to back RBI hits...fields messes up on a play to give them another run. Other than that, Gavin didn't look bad at all, the defense has been letting him down lately making him throw extra pitches, but i can't stress enough on the importance of him establishing his curveball early.
finally the sox get to robertson in the seventh and then plate 3 runs against joel zumaya (2 charged to robertson)...Pudges throwing error let's the sox tie the game at 4...then ozzie brings in Nick Massett. I understand throwing a guy out there to boost his confidence, but damn ozzie you gotta go with what's been your bread and butter all year (a mix of dotel/thornton/linebrink in the 7th and 8th)...massett serves up a homerun to carlos guillen after falling behind hitters early and often
the ninth rolls around and after two quick outs, Q! shoots a single past polanco at 2nd which sets for the stage for JD to put the sox up
a big win to open up this big roadtrip...hopefully the offense can get it going more and the pitching can keep it going...before the game i was expecting a 6-4 trip...now i'm upping that to 7-3...
Some other notes:
Josh Fields looked lost his first AB...but got the rally going in the seventh with a leadoff single...defense needs to improve but if he starts sticking it...we can live with it for now
the rest of the offense needs to be able to get in runs when the situation presents itself...AJ looked terrible grounding out weakly to third with alexei on third with one out early in the game...Konerko looked absolutely terrible at the plate today with 2 K's and 4 LOBs..how much longer can this go on before ozzie does something about it (avg. now stands at a solid .215)
Orca had two RBI singles in the game and continues to hit well with RISP...
tomorrow it's john danks vs. justin verlander...both pitchers have ERA's over 5 career against each team...verlander career 2-6 vs sox...but 3-0 with a 1.99 ERA in his last 3 starts
anything else you guys wanna add just throw out whatever...

A game recap!!!!! Thank You furby2056!
but he's the capt'n, or is that crap'n
I must say
I’m suddenly very worried about the defense. Really sloppy all around lately. Bunch of stupid plays, too – like Q throwing to the wrong base, Fields fucking up tonight, etc. The pitching has also obviously been very shaky lately. Remember two months ago, when we were all bitching about the offense? All of a sudden it’s all we’ve got going, and thank goodness for it…
Apropos nothing, would anybody besides me have been completely terrified if Leyland had pinch-hit Thames for Polanco in the ninth? That dude is a homer machine.
Thames has 10.5 AB/HR (!)
For comparison, Q has 13.8 AB/HR
Why so serious?

Last time I looked...
the Sox DER was right around average in all of baseball. I wish I could get the exact figure but BP appears to be down as of right now.
The reason I bring that up is because it’s (arguably) the main reason why the Sox should stick with OC for the remainder of the season. He’s played this season exactly the way the Sox should’ve expected him to play. His offense is down a tad from the past two years, but he’s 33 years old, and an 80 OPS+ isn’t far from his career OPS+. He still appears to be a well-above average baserunner (16-for-18 in stolen base attempts and when he’s run through Cox’ stop signs he’s usually been correct) and, as mentioned, the defense is still first-class.
But I’ve gotten off track here just a bit. Keep OC because of his defense (and the fact that it’s not worth losing the two first-round picks as well as Poreda and any others (for - presumably - Roberts)).
I tend to the agree with that re:OC
With Fields at 3B, the Sox need superior defense at SS and Cabrera has generally provided that. Supposedly, Keith Law wrote that Alexei Ramirez is below average defensively at any position he plays. I know BP’s defensive stats have him below average at 2B (I think Chris Dial had him as average). But in any case, I don’t want the Sox to move Ramirez to SS in the middle of a pennant race.
To keep this short, the bottom line is that I don’t think OC can be traded for anyone who makes the 2008 Sox better overall (the Sox dont have the prospects to get Roberts).
Announcer: [A fan] from Frederick, Maryland, wants to know why you don't go out and get some more team speed.
Weaver: Team speed, for Chrissake, you get BLEEP god damn little fleas on the bases getting picked off trying to steal, getting thrown out, taking runs away from you. You get them big BLEEP who can hit the BLEEP ball out of the BLEEP ballpark and you can't make any god damn mistakes.

DER is available on the THT team stats page
we’re at .694 now after being above .700 earlier in the season. Part of that is BABIP coming back to earth, but there’s been some less than stellar D of late.
are you trying to use stats around here? what the fuck do you think this is? - MM
Don't get too down on Fields
He started a bit shake at 3B last year as well and got better and better as season went on. He is a bit excited right now as you can see from his “red” face when he made that error in the 3rd inning. Yes, defense can be shaky at times, but Fields will just get better, and I am glad he got into the mix with runners on base and him not getting any outs because of the error: he screwed up a bit already, so he has nothing to worry about anymore, it’s out of his way. Now I want to see his power and a bit of long ball hitting.
What was that? 0-2, with 2 outs in the 9th, then...
Q gets a hit!
JD gets the dinger!
Sox get the (very surprising) come-from-behind victory!
Twins lose!
Cubs lose!
Sox in 1st by 3 1/2 games!
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together – mass hysteria!
I’m going to sleep like a baby tonight.

re: pk
any jack custs available?
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
haha
if fields starts struggling we can go for jack cust and that hannihan kid…hell why don’t we just trade pk fields and prospects for hannihan, cust, street, and duchscherer…bring even more awesome over to the southside…swish will go crazy!
i think it would be pretty sweet if ssh's kid and kenwo's kid had offspring together...whether you believe in nature or nurture, it wouldn’t be boring.-larry
nice recaps

Therapy grows on Fields: Says blood treatment has solved knee pain
Third baseman Josh Fields went to Vail, Colo., last month, but not for a skiing trip.http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/cs-080725-josh-fields-knee-chicago-white-sox,1,1625583.storyFields went to the renowned Steadman-Hawkins Clinic for treatment of a persistent right knee injury.
“I haven’t missed a game since I came back,” Fields said Friday after being promoted from Triple-A Charlotte to the White Sox.
Fields underwent a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment in which a patient’s blood components are used to heal damaged tissue. This therapy is used to help cure knee, hip, shoulder, leg and back pain.
“I guess it came down to a bunch of things,” Fields said.
“Tendinitis and grinding on it, and I’ve been in a couple of collisions at home plate in Charlotte at the beginning of the season. It all has been mixed in one and it came to a head.”
