The Sox just traded for Ken Griffey Jr.
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8398348/Reds,-ChiSox-agree-on-Griffey-trade,-await-approval
Not really sure what this does to our club, but, we shall find out.
I imagine that he will play center, maybe some at the corner outfield spots if Q or JD needs a day. But, Swish and Paulie's roles with the team will be drastically reduced. My question is, where is the pitching?
It is unknown what they gave up in the deal, so It could possible lead to something else.

What!?!?
My dad called me on his way to work to tell me this, and I don’t get this at all. Does Kenny like to make trades that no one expected, even if they dont make any damn sense? This has to have a corresponding move. Konerko traded? Please?
by JoeCoolMan24 on Jul 31, 2008 8:03 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Griffey is going to play center. Swish and Konerko would have to split time.
Konerko has no trade rights and…he sucks…in my opinion (which isn’t worth anything) it would be tought to get anything for him
by PVL on Jul 31, 2008 8:04 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
griffey playing center would be insanity. he was atrocious five years ago.
Some numbers:
Center Field
UZR: -46 runs per 150 games (2003-2006)
PMR: -44 outs per 150 games (2005-2006)
RZR: -36 outs per 150 games (2004-2006)
Right Field
UZR: -16 runs per 150 games (2007)
PMR: -14 outs per 150 games (2007)
RZR: -22 outs per 150 games (2007-2008)
Say what you will about individual defensive metrics, but we have a mountain of evidence that Griffey is one of, if not the worst everyday defensive player in the game. You’re talking about a guy who’s a -15 run corner outfielder when he’s completely healthy, which he never is. He’s impossibly bad and quite likely worse than Raul Ibanez with dust in his eye, meaning that even if he were a plus hitter – which he isn’t – he’d still be giving everything right back in the field. When MGL called him the worst player in baseball, he wasn’t kidding around. Griffey’s got a convincing argument.
So we’ve established that Griffey isn’t a good hitter, and he isn’t even good enough to be an awful fielder. There has to be an upside, right? What would he do for us?

Seriously, Kenny has gone insane...
Posters here thought it would be ridiculous for Kenny to give up prospects for a reliever.
This move is amazingly insane unless there is more to it.

huh
had no idea that griff was awful. hmm, this makes less sense. even if he was average, the best situation would be for him to platoon (griff accepting that is less likely) with BA and move swish to 1st, but now this makes no sense.
He was a catcher with the Orioles back in the day. Sorry looking (expletive). My brother had his card. He looked like this little kid who got left at a bus station by his parents. You know why? Because he had to catch Hoyt Wilhelms knuckle ball five (expletive) years.

RedReporter guy here
Trust me, you don’t want Jr. playing ANYWHERE in the OF, and definitely not CF. I’d say he could DH and become a pretty damned good hitter again, but I don’t see how that happens with Thome there.
How can such a good looking man be so bad at getting to first base?

But he wouldn’t warm to the idea from my understanding. It’d be great if he could, obviously. FWIW, I’ll be rooting for the Sox, Junior really deserves to get a ring.

Well, I tell you one thing
The Sox just added quite a bit of salary for next season and the remainder of this one, unless someone expensive is on the way out.
As long as the package was a couple of “b” prospects my intitial thoughs are to like this deal. Griffey would be a hell of a 4th outfielder, and as long as he’s treated that way this move should help the club win this year.
But where will he play? Maybe the Sox’ scouts have vetted Griffey and think he can play CF every 3rd day or so.
by madvillian on Jul 31, 2008 8:15 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs

110 OPS+ against RHP, that’s a very usefull bench player. Shit, if this move means that the Sox are willing take on salary to get a bench player I’m all for it. As long as Fields wasn’t part of the deal and it’s someone like Broadway/Egbert/Haeger etc I’m happy.

Where does he play?
If the Sox are willing to risk Thome at 1B and plug Griffey in at DH against righties, that would make some sense. (Who is more likely to get injured at 1B, Thome or Junior?) If Griffey gets any time in the outfield, or takes at-bats away from anyone not named Konerko, this trade is a downtrade from what the Sox already have.
As mobility-challenged Reds go, I’d much rather have Dunn, but I imagine Jocketty wasn’t asking for a lot for Junior.

First time poster so be gentle, but I’m pretty excited about the move. I used to be stationed in Seattle when he was with the Mariners and always wished he’d been on the Sox.
I really think Griffey could find some motivation here and am hopeful that it could breathe some life back into his career. It wouldn’t be completely out of the realm of possibility for him to catch Barry Bonds someday, how cool would it be for him to do that at the Cell!!!

But most of that is speculation IMO. Griffey is not being brought in to play CF IMO, he’s being brought in to be a role player off the bench, which is why he might not agree to this trade.

but why likely? according to Kenny, Swisher was acquired for several reasons: he’s a reasonable cost, he’s “chicago tough,” he gets on-base, etc etc etc. Why is it likely after four months, that he would be dumped for a setup guy?

Aging superstars on the White Sox.
From memory, these include Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, Ron Santo, Jose Canseco, Roy Smalley, and George Kell.
Other than Seaver’s 300th win, not much good happened for the Sox after making these deals. Though Carlton is one of the ten best pitchers in baseball history, I don’t exactly have warm memories of his time at Comiskey.
If Ken Williams wants an aging star to handle CF poorly, he can get Minnie Minoso’s phone number from Jerry and save the hassle of trading paperwork with Cincinnati. (Junior’s still a better bet than Minoso to tear a hamstring if given CF duties.)

Santo Was Great
It gets lost on the youth because Santo is such a buftoon in the broadcast booth, but he was a truly great player. I suppose we can get into a definitional argument about what a “superstar” is but Santo was a 9 time all-star, 5 time gold glove winner, who was and OPS monster. By my reckoning, he’s the best eligible player not in the HOF. So, yeah, in my book that’s a “superstar.”

Santo is on the shortlist of best 3Bs in history
I am the last person to cut a Cub any slack, but it is criminal that he is not in the Hall of Fame. His numbers look less dramatic today, but in the context of his time, they were outstanding.
By the time he got to Comiskey, of course, he was done. That did not deter the Sox from picking up an equally cooked Don Kessinger a couple of years later.

On merit, he should be.
Though enough sportswriters - especially in Philadelphia - loathed him, and that’s not going to help his chances. Some will bitch about his bat being his only tool, but damn, what a hitter.
The weird thing about Santo is the media liked him, he was great, and still he can’t get in the Hall.

You're Wrong About Seaver
Tom Terrific was really good for us during the wasteland of 84-85. Probably our best starter each year. Hell, in 1985 he won 16 games with an ERA+ of 136. God, what I’d give for that right now.
Now, I am not for an instant suggesting that we’re going to get comparable production from Griffey. Its just that bad mid-80s White Sox teams are my sweet spot.
by Landfill on Jul 31, 2008 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
An effective pitcher, yes.
But hardly the foundation for a successful team. Hemond may have been better off threatening to draft Seaver and extracting multiple players from the Mets instead. (Hey, it worked against the Cubs when they made Fergie Jenkins available.) That team got old and bad in a hurry. Man, was 1984 a brutal hangover.

Sportline is reporting that it's Richar and Masset
I would rather have traded a pitcher than Richar, but oh well. At best Richar is an adequate everyday 2B , and KW seems to be able to found those guys elsewhere than from the Sox’ minor league system

It all depends on how Griffey is used
If he’s being brought in to play CF everyday than this trade is a mistake IMO. If he’s coming in a LH bat off the bench that plays 2-3 times a week with Dye/Swisher moving to 1B on those days then yes, this is a deal with moderate upside.
by madvillian on Jul 31, 2008 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
What about moving Dye to first and sticking
Griff in right?
by Illini0509 on Jul 31, 2008 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dye might not like that. Dye is a better RF at this point, put Griffey at first.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 31, 2008 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm okay with either of those
I thought Dye played a little bit of first, has Junior ever?
by Illini0509 on Jul 31, 2008 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ehh...
if Griffey is in CF at all, just about any offense he provides is negated by the likelihood of anything hit to CF falling to the grass. I’m fine with this move so long as Griffey doesn’t see a second in CF. He’s a rather large upgrade to the bench.
I think I should have enough confidence in Kenny to know he won’t be seeing any time in CF, but I still have a little nervous-ness in my stomach (that or I’m hungover). In any case, if Guillen is able to leverage it where Swisher stays in CF but Konerko and Griffey are platooned, that strikes me as a pretty sizeable upgrade for the next two months. For the past two seasons Griffey is putting up about an .875 OPS versus righties. That’s gotta be about a half-a-win-to-a-win upgrade down the stretch (offensively speaking), right?
by CWSKeith on Jul 31, 2008 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well said
If Ozzie uses him right this trade boosts the offense enough to squeek out another win and will obviously help in the playoffs.
Masset and Richar are fungible with players the Sox already have or could reasonably acquire going forward, and if Cincy is picking up the tag then this is a solid if unspectacular move.

But via BBTF commenters have said that Cincy is picking up the rest of Griffey’s contract. If that is so I’m officially on this trade’s bandwagon pending how Ozzie uses him.

I can't complain about the price.
My only concern is how Griffey will be used.
At least now we are in no danger of - should there be postseason baseball for the Sox - seeing Nick Masset pitch in October. Richar’s value to the organization probably took a hit the day Alexei was signed. True, he can play 2B, but so can Chris Getz, and I wouldn’t bet a lot of money on Richar being able to outhit Getz at the major league level.

No Swish!
Don’t trade swisher… we’ve got him basically under our control at reasonable salary through 2012. While Street isn’t eligible for free agency, he is arbitration eligible. I would much rather have Swish for 4 more years than a reliever who has already had TJ surgery.
Also, don’t give up on PK! I would love Griffey as a 4th OF, and a guy who can rotate for the corner guys or for Thome when they need a day off, and a CF when we face tough righties.

for one, Swish is a switch-hitter. For two, we know that he’s not slumping much. He’s been incredibly unlucky. And besides, he plays CF, where the average slash line this year is .266/.331/.417. Swish: .230/.348/.404. Tack on 20 points of BA and suddenly we’ve got a .370 OBP in CF.

Basically.
But that does have to mean no to Griffey in center. But he can play everywhere in the OF and 1B and he’s locked up for cheap. He’s an outstanding value all the way around.

I am positive about this move - not cursing KW til my death or anything, no matter how much estrogen courses through me.
But honestly, only time will tell.
I don’t think it’s enough to just have Ken mutha-fuckin’ Griffey Jr on our team.
His presence doth not a pennant guarantee.
But he just might work out for us – at the end of his career and hungry for a ring. I’ll take it! If there is any indication of how mental this game is, let us glance in PK’s sullen direction.

Why would the Sox trade their second best hitter to add Griffey?
One possibility would be for the Sox to move Dye to 1B and stick Griffey in RF with Swisher in CF but I don’t see that happening.

The Sox are going to trade Dye as he’s in the midst of yet another great season? That doesn’t make any sense unless they are getting another big bat back, and that just doesn’t seem very likely at all.

I will never forgive KW for this...
To everyone asking if KW has lost his mind: the answer is yes. I am really hurt and angry by his decision. Who never loved KG Jr.? That’s not the problem. The problem is that his own Reds fans have booed him because he’s so slow in the field. He may bat better than Richar at the moment, but give it a year and we’ll see. I’m all for “old guys” trying to go out in glory, but don’t let it be at the expense of our young, budding talent. Richar was a great prospect and a solid ball player. He often made integral plays that may have not gotten the attention that was deserved. He got injured and I sent the man a get-well card and let him know that there were people in Chicago that appreciated his playing-now what do I tell him? :( Anyway, I was really waiting for the day we saw Richar on 2nd and Alexi as SS. As I have been, I will wear my Richar jersey proudly to every game and I will curse KW’s decision until my death. You wanna’ talk about a trade? -- Let’s get KW outta’ there for someone who has better sense.

Richar love...
First, I’m the type of person who loves baseball for the game itself, but also for the ethos and philosophy that fuels it. I appreciate stats, but I’m more into the story.
Richar made solid plays (especially when we would really need a double play or base hit), had a good attitude, and played behind the scenes to allow for some historical moments (i.e., set up to allow for Thome’s 500th walk-off). Also, his debut was my debut back in the ballpark. I’m a native South-Sider who returned to the ballpark that day with a renewed and deep love and passion for being able to once again watch live Sox games. It was as if I was renewing wedding vows and Danny was getting married for the first time that day. (I know I’ll get nailed for that analogy.)
Be honest, boys: Don’t we all have that player that we had to “mourn” their trade?
I’ll back out of the discussion now. Just wanted to say my bit.

Konerko does have .70 OPS career platton split against LHP
.891 OPS career wise, so if he’s only in against LHP that will help. Sample size from this year (50 AB) too small to really garner anything, all he has been garbage in that small time.

Question:
What are the rules for contacting players and/or players agents in a situation like the Griffey trade?
Would the Sox, hypothetically, been allowed to ask Griffey’s agent if he would have any interest in coming to the Sox?
Or do the Sox have to seek the trade without being able to talk to agent or player and then leave themselves up to Griffey’s mercy?
Or can the Reds, upon undergoing negotiations say, “Ok Kenny you can talk to Griffey about whatever”

Small part from Keith Law (Espn)
“The best lineup move for Chicago now would be to bench first baseman Paul Konerko, who has a .661 OPS. But no matter how the White Sox realign their defense, they’ll field a bad defensive outfield unit and, with Griffey in the outfield, more balls to the gaps will become hits. The offensive difference between Griffey and Konerko for the rest of the season is probably just one win, but the addition of Griffey removes a futile bat from the White Sox’s potential postseason lineup, so he may provide more of a payoff in October than September. “

But I cannot for the life of me see how Ozzie could be that stupid and play Griffey at CF. He’s bad out there, everyone knows it, and it isn’t some rare occurrence. Ego may be playing into these prognostications, but there is no way the Sox make a trade that actually makes them worse.

what are the records of teams making a trade for big name player
post trading deadline within the past few years?
i recall the nba had those stats for when shaq, jason kidd, and pau gasol were traded and it was clearly evident that the gasol trade improved the lakers whereas the suns were merely .500 with shaq
just curious what the history is behind trades in mlb and the related effect of the player on the team’s record
by The Scoper on Jul 31, 2008 12:28 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well it's pretty dependant on the trade and who's involved
Getting Randy Johnson when he’s still a dominant pitcher at the deadline will obviously have a much bigger impact than trading for an aged Griffey. One was meant to carry a team for a playoff race, the other is meant to plug a weak spot in the lineup, and the expectations are nowhere near as high.

guess I took long enough in writing this for Ken Griffey Jr. to approve the trade sending him to the White Sox in exchange for two older prospects, Nick Masset and Danny Richar. Masset, 26, is a fringe righty who has some ability to keep the ball down, and with his size should be a back-end starter rather than a reliever. He doesn’t have the skills to be good in the bullpen, but he can throw 180 innings in the rotation. Richar, 25, has speed, pop, and absolutely no place to play in Cincinnati. He’s not a shortstop, and Brandon Phillips does every single thing better than he does.
The funny thing is, you might make a similar claim about Griffey and the White Sox. Griffey, like Rodriguez, comes with the reputation as a superstar forged during the Clinton Administration. Now, though, he’s an aging, fragile hitter with a slowing bat and no ability to play a big defensive role. The White Sox’ three best hitters play DH, left field, and right field. Nick Swisher, basically a league-average hitter, plays center. Paul Konerko, fading star, plays first base.
Now, there are a lot of permutations here, and not a single one looks attractive. Neither Dye nor Quentin is equipped to move to center field for more than an inning or so. Griffey isn’t remotely a center fielder any longer, and an outfield featuring those three in any configuration, well, you probably can hear Javier Vazquez’s teeth grinding as he contemplates the idea. You can’t sit Thome, who’s a better hitter than Griffey. If you give Konerko’s playing time to Griffey, you force either Swisher to first base, Griffey to the outfield and Vazquez to a dentist, or Thome to first base. The Sox have had Thome don a glove four times in three seasons, and if they go that route, they run the risk of off-field drama as Konerko adjusts to the bench and his legions of fans in Chicago go nuts. Keep something else in mind: the only one of the five players Griffey is better than, and even this is arguable, is Konerko.
The Sox gave up so little that you can’t fault them for making the deal, but it’s not clear what it does for them. Griffey would make a neat pinch-hitter and occasional starter for any of the players involved, but he’s inferior to almost all of them, and as such shouldn’t be playing regularly over any of them. The optimal alignment here is probably a Griffey/Konerko platoon, with Griffey playing first base. Anything else, anything that takes Swisher out of center field—and he isn’t Dwayne Murphy—or puts a glove on Thome could cancel out whatever small offensive boost Griffey brings. It’s a fascinating situation, and like the Tigers/Yankees deal, a situation in which the analysis of a trade has to go beyond the players and take into account the context of the teams.

It’s not that the scenario was thought of last – it’s that there is some difference of opinion as to whether or not it improves the team at all. I’m not sure it does at the cost of Richar.

I just don't see the downside
If Griffey can play first base that is, if not we know JD can. Might be good for JD to save the legs down the stretch anyways.
Konerko / Griffey platoon until further notice, once in a while he gets a spot start in right or CF if need be. JD, Thome, Konerko, Griffey all aging guys, doesn’t hurt to have an extra left handed bat if one of them goes down. We didn’t give up anything of value.
We all wanted Masset gone, we got at worst a power hitting left hander off the bench for Danny Richar and Richar has fallen off the map.
We apparently are getting a relief pitcher from the Nationals.. who can’t be worse than Nick Masset. How is this team not better after this trade? Hell, the Reds are even throwing in 4 million in cash.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 31, 2008 1:12 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
You have to factor ego bruising in these position switches
I’m not an expert on how Dye, Konerko, Griffey act in the clubhouse, but I don’t think JD would be too happy about moving to 1st when he’s been the everyday RF for the Sox for 4 seasons now. Benching Konerko is something that should happen, but again you’re dealing with a vet and fan favorite with a monster contract, sitting him, especially in favor of Griffey may not sit well.
I agree that platooning Jr and Paulie at 1st makes the most sense, and in essence the combo gives the Sox an average bat in the lineup as opposed to Konerko’s shame spiral. My hope is that Griffey will accept whatever time he gets because he’s going to be in a legit playoff race for the first time in some years, and Swisher brings him over to our side with his loveable attitude.

pre-reqs to joining the Sox:
Step One: Learn hipbump (time jump, rotate, stick it out!)
Step Two: No turning the hat backwards during batting practice (so 1995)
Step Three: Practice Captain Morgan dugout celebration (which leg goes up again?)
Step Four: Don’t out-awesome Swish. (you’re an add-on, not the drink-stirrer anymore)
