Another Griffey thread
[Mark Gonzales]: 12:02 pm: Ken Griffey Jr. is one of only six players to hit at least 600 home runs and has been named to 13 All-Star teams. But the Sox are banking the 38-year-old Griffey has enough production left to help them to the post-season. The Whte Sox acquisition of the Cincinnati slugger is moving closer to reality. FOXSports.com, which first reported the trade, and Associated Press are reporting that Griffey approved the deal and it's now in the hands of the Commissioner's office. The Reds apparently have agreed to pick up a substantial portion of Griffey's salary. He will earn $12.5 million this season, with a $16.5 million team option and $4 million buyout. It's rare that the Commissioner's Office rejects deals involving more than $1 million exchanged. CBSSports.com is reporting that Cincinnati would pay the remaining $4 million due on Griffey's contract this season. A scouting source said the Sox will move reliever Nick Masset and second baseman Danny Richar to the Reds for Griffey and an undisclosed amount of cash. Masset and Richar are on the 40-man roster. The source added that the Griffey deal was fueled by the struggles of Paul Konerko, who is batting .214 and has only three extra base hits since coming off the disabled list July 8. Konerko has a full no-trade clause.
WGN-TV says Griffey will play center, I don't know how accurate is this.

A quick graphic:
Here’s the newprojected lineup compared to AL averages this year. It’s quick and dirty, but it spells out a pretty damn good offense.

Lannan looks like a worse version of Cliff Floyd
Peripherals don’t match the ERA at all, although as a 23 year old he certainly has time to improve.
One thing that should be noted is that Griffey was swinging for 600 and that could have been a pretty big detriment to his swing and stats, I wonder what his OPS is after the 600th.

The Score 670 Chicago reports that the White Sox are close to acquiring John Lannan from the Nationals.
It’s unknown just who the Chicago would be sending over in the deal, but this is Jim Bowden we’re dealing with, so anything is possible. Lannan is arbitration eligible through 2013, and he can keep the ball on the ground, which would make him a nice fit in Chicago.

“Kenny said he really had to make a move right now to get another bat in the lineup,” Masset told MLB.com of his talk with White Sox general manager Ken Williams in regard to being part of the Griffey trade, which also sent infielder Danny Richar to the Reds, and is pending approval from the Commissioner’s Office.http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080731&content_id=3231052&vkey=news_cws&fext=.jsp&c_id=cws“He also told me how this helps me, giving me the opportunity to be a starter,” Masset added. “He said that he put in some good words about me to the Reds. I really respect Kenny for that part. I think it’s going to be a win-win situation for both teams.”
...
“Ultimately, I think it’s going to really open up my future as a starter,” said Masset of the move to the Reds. “I’m really looking forward to being a starter, if that’s where they want me to fit.“That’s something I always wanted to do, and I’m excited to head over to the National League. But I also have a lot of great friendships with the guys over here, and it’s tough leaving a first place team in contention for the playoffs. It’s tough leaving the White Sox.”

Griffey to play RF and DH...
He didnt approve the trade immediately because he was concerned about his ability to play CF. He was assured by White Sox GM Kenny Williams that he’d be playing some RF and doing some DH-ing as well… and that the Sox were confident enough in his ability to get jumps on balls and in his overall instincts that he wouldnt be a detriment in center…

That's as bout as frank as you'd get before the deal was made, I like that
Of course they aren’t going to say, “Well Jr., to get some playing time you probably will have to play some 1B, or hope that JD doesn’t midn playing some 1B”, otherwise you’ll be giving Thome a day off once a week and Dye a day off once every 10 days, enjoy your chance to make the playoffs as a bench player.
I’m glad KW and Griffey both know he can’t play CF.

Comments on the Griffey trade...
Dusty Baker on the trade of Ken Griffey Jr. to the Chicago White Sox:“I hate to see Junior go. Junior was one of the best superstars I’ve ever been around. I think it’s good for him. He’s a lot closer to the top—to winning.”
“They wanted Junior badly. We didn’t approach them. They approached us.”
The call from the White Sox came during last night’s game.
“I was surprised when I came in after the game and was told what transpired,” Baker said. “I want him happy. I hope the players we got are happy with us.”
Baker doesn’t know if this means the Reds keep Adam Dunn.
“I don’t know,” he said.
“Marty Brennaman on the trade”
Ken Griffey Jr. and Marty Brennaman rode on the elevator at the Mayflower Hotel after the team arrived in Washington at 5 a.m. this morning. Brennaman was going to the sixth floor, Griffey the seventh.“When the elevators stopped at my floor he put his briefcase up and stopped the door,” Brennaman said. “I said, ‘He want to thank you. You’ve been very fair. I appreciate that.”
“I said, ‘What are you talking about?’”
“He said, ‘I’ve been traded.’”
“I said, ‘Get out of here. I don’t believe it. Where?’ He said Chicago. He showed me an email he had on his phone from (his agent) Brian Goldberg.”
Griffey and Brennaman talked for 15 minutes.
“It was very poignant,” Brennaman said. “He told me he wouldn’t change a thing. He was glad to put on the same uniform his dad did for nine years.”
Breennaman said Griffey told him he until 1 p.m. today to approve the trade.

you tell 'em, kenny
“Our intent is to win the American League Central division and ultimately, to win another World Series championship,” said Ken Williams, White Sox general manager. “Adding a player the caliber of Ken Griffey Jr. gives us a better chance to realize those goals. Griffey’s addition gives Ozzie (Guillen) more flexibility. Ozzie has the opportunity to field his best team – offensively and defensively – on a day-to-day basis over the next two months, and this gives us the chance to keep some of our middle of the order hitters fresh and producing down the stretch. I spoke with Ken, and he is excited to be coming to Chicago to try and help us reach the postseason.”

The Early Returns, by Joe Sheehan
... Now, there are a lot of permutations here, and not a single one looks attractive. Neither Dye nor Quentin is equipped to move to center field for more than an inning or so. Griffey isn’t remotely a center fielder any longer, and an outfield featuring those three in any configuration, well, you probably can hear Javier Vazquez’s teeth grinding as he contemplates the idea. You can’t sit Thome, who’s a better hitter than Griffey. If you give Konerko’s playing time to Griffey, you force either Swisher to first base, Griffey to the outfield and Vazquez to a dentist, or Thome to first base. The Sox have had Thome don a glove four times in three seasons, and if they go that route, they run the risk of off-field drama as Konerko adjusts to the bench and his legions of fans in Chicago go nuts. Keep something else in mind: the only one of the five players Griffey is better than, and even this is arguable, is Konerko.http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7886The Sox gave up so little that you can’t fault them for making the deal, but it’s not clear what it does for them. Griffey would make a neat pinch-hitter and occasional starter for any of the players involved, but he’s inferior to almost all of them, and as such shouldn’t be playing regularly over any of them. The optimal alignment here is probably a Griffey/Konerko platoon, with Griffey playing first base. Anything else, anything that takes Swisher out of center field—and he isn’t Dwayne Murphy—or puts a glove on Thome could cancel out whatever small offensive boost Griffey brings. It’s a fascinating situation, and like the Tigers/Yankees deal, a situation in which the analysis of a trade has to go beyond the players and take into account the context of the teams.

Griffey as a platoon player off the bench.

you know what, i'm excited
I’m not sure how this “fits” with the rest of the team, but I know that we added Griffey without losing anyone of value on this year’s team. I also know that he is really likable and it will be fun to see that batting stance swagger for the rest of the year.

I haven't been this excited since they signed Jose Conseco

I would have liked the trade more if he was 10 years younger and didn't suck in the field...
but oh well. A big positive to the trade was dumping Masset and Richar didn’t have a role with Beckham being drafted.

Manny to the Dodgers
per CBSSportsline:
The saga is over. Manny Ramirez is going to the Dodgers and Jason Bay will replace him in left field at Fenway Park after a three-way trade is completed between Boston, L.A. and the Pirates, Scott Miller reports.

Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.

I did not think the Red Sox had the balls at all to trade Manny, but that Theo is a crazy bitch.
Doesn’t CC want to sign with the Dodgers after this year as well?

If this happens
Ortiz will suddenly not be as good as he has been. He can blame it on an injury, but it’s been Manny behind him that helps him the most. I can’t stand that guy and his bs. Here’s hoping they knock his fat ass down every other at bat so we can watch him pick himself up like rhino on a ski slope.
I’ll take my pill and rest now.
Show mercy. I get to watch the Rangers.

I am out of my GD mind today on meds
yet recognize tremendous wit and insight when I (blearily) see it. However, I must interject 2 things:
1. Cheat, where is the obit for Chicago Pete? It’s Thursday. You promised.
2. Speaking of CP, no one has mentioned the obvious reason for the KGJ trade (as Pete, God rest His soul, would surely have said) is to PUMP UP THE GATE! When he hits his 600th dinger sirens will shriek, rainbows will appear without rain, birds will…(What? He’s already hit his 600th?)
Never mind.
shaftr, the ghost author. cheat, the never-present manager. colin, the obfuscating author. wiz…well. who the fuck knows. at least he shows up to work.
