When Kornerko comes back ...

For the last week or so Southsiders have been debating what do once Paul Kornerko comes back.  There are many situations that have to be dealt with.  First, someone must be sent down to the minors.  Second, someone must move out of the starting lineup.

There is no one on the roster that I want to send down.  I like the depth that Uribe supplies and both Anderson and Wise have proved to be valuable.  Also with the recent success of the White Sox, many fans do not want to mess with the starting lineup.  But having Kornerko in the lineup is a must.  He will turn his season around and help the team.  The man we do not need in the lineup is Jim Thome.  Thome really limits the team because he can not play in the field.  His season has been well below average so far and it will finsih below average.  Not only are his hitting statistics down, but I have noticed that he is not a clutch hitter.  The White Sox have a ton of homeruns nearly double than the Twins who are close to us.  We can cut down on the number of homeruns we hit and instead add some speed which will help us hit better in the clutch.  Basically, the point is that the White Sox do not need Jim Thome..  Instead play Kornerko at DH, keep Swisher at first, and play Wise or Anderson at Center.  That way our defense is better and even our overall offense.  We will not have as many homeruns without Thome but we will have more speed, more clutch hitting, and less strikeouts.

I always here that Thome gets too much money for him to be benched.  This makes no sense.  We have to pay him no matter how well he plays or even if he plays.  So if our team is better without him than his salary is no reason not to bench him or even release him.

So it's not a big deal to bench Thome

Yet Paulie wasn’t having a great season by any stretch, but he’s a must start?

I don’t see any big deal in platooning the DH with Paulie and Thome. It probably won’t happen because of their veteran status, but this team is just so much better defensively with Swisher at 1st, and BA at center. This team doesn’t need Uribe. They have Pablo filling the role of useless utility man quite nicely.

swish is just solid at 1st....

but we all know paulie will more than likely be put back there

uribe or pablo….one of those two need to go…preferrably both but what can you do…juan threatens with his ass and pablo helps coop get around the clubhouse with his bad hammy….DFA somebody!

how long before john and jordan danks sit atop the brothers home run list?

people won't think wise is such hot shit when his 35% line drive rate plummets back to reality.

he’s getting the same irrational love terstado got last year. he sucks, people.

jim thome, as someone else pointed out tonight, is 24th in the league in OPS. let’s ruminate for a millisecond how colossally dumb it would be to bench such a player and never speak of it again.

we’ll see how paul does when he comes back. if he’s hitting like he was prior to his injury, it’s pretty ridiculous to suggest that he’s better than thome or, in fact, that he should even be playing regularly. if he does start to hit, it gets equally ridiculous to suggest that BA/wise should be playing in his stead. the difference in defense (i’m not even going to get into the silly speed, clutch and strikeout arguments) isn’t that substantial. pretty much should play wait and see with this one. and, if pablo isn’t going to be asked to consent to assignment to AAA and uribe isn’t going to be traded, then wise is the one who should go.

If there's a baseball equivalent to "never fight a land war in Asia," Vizzini might tell us "never buy the decline years of a player."

The problem is that the Sox, much like Hawk, seem to think that...

Wise is going to keep this up, or that he may actually be this good.

Hawk talks about Wise like Kenny found some flawless diamond in the rough.

Once Konerko is back and Swisher is back in CF, the Sox don’t really need five outfielders when Anderson can play everywhere out there. But regardless of the status of the roster, Ozuna is almost always worthless so he should be the one to go.

by SSH2005 on Jul 6, 2008 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

But Thome is so unclutch

You gotta get with the Zeitgeist.

Benching Thome obviously shouldn’t and won’t happen. It would make sense for Ozuna or Russell to be on a bus, but with Crede’s back I think Pablo’s job is oddly secure and the Sox seem to have decided they need legions of relief pitchers. So it seems to come down to Wise and Uribe being the odd man out. The reality is that Uribe is much more useful than Wise, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Sox DFA Uribe.

how does paul konerko offer any versatility?

if the sox were to, as you suggest, bench thome and play konerko, then they would clearly dh konerko, as you say. his ability to play first base wouldn’t help because they would play swisher, the better defender, there. so when discussing pk vs. thome the only question is who is hitting better? is there even any debate to that question?

yea, well at least your name isn't michael bolton

He was banned for today partly because he uses bad words (in a mean way; unlike everyone else who only use them when absolutely necessary in order to fight the terrorists)

kornerko: 83 ops+, thome: 117 ops+

kornerko: 12 mil, thome: 8.5 mil

Why is this tough?

Paulie on DL, Wise comes up.

Paulie off DL, Wise goes down. (Rather it be Ozuna, but it’s not happening.)

I think Wise's small sample size of stats is going to keep him on the roster...

He is easily the best bench bat that the Sox have.

And the way Ozzie and Kenny talk about Wise, it sure doesn’t sound like Konerko will be taking his roster spot.

Speed man

We need speed and Wise provides that and a left handed bat. I would send down Uribe because Ozuna can play third.

Sorry about misspelling Konerko’s name. That was bad.

I could be a turnstile at 3B as well...

Maybe the Sox should keep me on the roster.

by SSH2005 on Jul 7, 2008 7:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Why would you rather have Ozuna than Uribe as the backup at 3rd or short?

I really haven’t seen anything from Pablo that shows he is worthy of a roster spot. Uribe may not blow us away, but I feel more comfortable seeing Uribe playing in the infield. When Pablo’s name shows up in the lineup, I die a little inside.

Second-half shifts
Guillen and his coaches have worked on a second-half plan to incorporate days off for regulars Jermaine Dye, Nick Swisher, Jim Thome and Konerko.

Swisher played well at first base in Konerko’s absence. That will allow the Sox to use Konerko occasionally at designated hitter to rest Thome.

With Swisher available again in the outfield, the Sox will have the flexibility to give him days off, as well as Dye.

’’We have a plan for the second half to move them around and keep them fresh because we’ll need them,’’ Guillen said. ’’P.K. will get more at-bats because he’s already had the 15 days off (on the DL).’‘
