An article on the shady goings on the DR, including the following nuggets:

Several baseball sources, all of whom said their jobs would be jeopardized if they spoke on the record about a federal investigation, say at least one general manager has already come under suspicion.

One National League executive, who insisted on anonymity, said he offered a $60,000 bonus to a prospect a couple of years ago only to have the buscon demand 10 times that much. Three months later, the executive said, the player signed with another team for more than $1.5 million."

"You think in three months a guy can improve by $1 million?" he said. "Something funny must have happened there. It's not only the buscones. The first case was the Chicago White Sox. And you will see in the future, other names are going to be coming out.

That was a pretty underwhelming read

A couple execs and GMs get to gripe about either paying what the market demands or refusing to pay it and losing out on prospects. Considering nothing else was substantiated in the article outside of Wilder and they managed, somehow, to not even mention how much players get paid in the draft and that this is supposedly a paper of high repute, I really doubt I’m missing anything by cutting the sports section out of my diet.

Brewers Acquire C.C. Sabathia

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

All I know so far is that top prospect Matt LaPorta is in the deal. I was told two lower-level minor leaguers also are included. The Brewers refused to include another top prospect such as Alcides Escobar or Mat Gamel.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Saturday the team is trying to close a deal that could package top prospect Matt LaPorta, Minor League third baseman Taylor Green and perhaps one more Minor Leaguer in return for Sabathia.
...
LaPorta and Green are both highly regarded prospects in the Brewers’ farm system. Entering play Saturday, LaPorta was batting .291 with 20 homers and 66 runs batted in at Double-A Huntsville. Green has batted .297 with a .381 on-base percentage so far this season in the Class A Florida State League.

A few possibilities based on skimming the MiLB DTs:

From A+: Taylor Green, Lorenzo Cain, Jeremy Jeffress perhaps. The latter is dominating A+ (minus a few gopher ball issues) and is a 2006 first rounder, so I doubt he’ll be one of them.

From A: Eric Fryer, Caleb Gindl and no real pitchers.

On that list, only Jeffress could maybe make me go “Oh shit, him for 5 years.” LaPorta is going to be really really good though. If Corey Hart isn’t a real CF, I’m kind of surprised they gave up LaPorta.

LaPorta doesn't play CF, no?

I'm saying I'd rather ditch Hart and take LaPorta

I don’t really know though. I’m not that familiar with the Brewers’ 3 year outlook. I don’t know what Sabathia’s value is to them, really.

They did likely guarantee 2 first rounders and a compensatory pick though. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

reminds me something
LaPorta, a right-handed slugger who is below-average defensively, would be a better fit for the American League. He was the Brewers’ first-round pick in 2007, and played first base at Florida, but the Brewers converted him to left field — a position occupied by Ryan Braun, who is signed through 2015.

How do you create a poll?

What move will the Sox make to bring Paulie Kornerko back from the D.L. on Tuesday?

  • Designate Pablo Ozuna for assignment.
  • Place Bobby Jenks on the D.L.
  • Send Adam Russell to AAA.
  • Send Brian Anderson to AAA.
  • Send DeWayne Wise to AAA.
  • Trade Juan Uribe.

by SSH2005 on Jul 6, 2008 8:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Go to "create fanpost"

then “attach poll”

but I'm pretty sure we'd all answer "DFA Pablo"

though “Send Adam Russell to AAA” would be a good answer too.

False

The question that SSH poses is not what should the White Sox do, but rather what will they do.

but

ah, shit. you said period. that means no one else can argue.

If there's a baseball equivalent to "never fight a land war in Asia," Vizzini might tell us "never buy the decline years of a player."

The article in the post

is what the Wilder case is all about. Not what that clown on Soxtalk said about HGH and other stuff. Wilder was lying to the club and the players about bonus money and skimming off the top. Rumor is he only got busted when he tried to pass a duffel bag full of cash through airport security in DR and they thought it might be drug money.
