LaPorta and who I wonder?
Either way I’m not looking forward to seeing LaPorta suit up for the Indians. His translated line, according to the DTs, is .259/.350/.522. That’s a pretty significant boost to a lagging offense. Gamel, fwiw, is hitting a translated .330/.383/.568. Not too shabby, but his ISO and BB rate aren’t as nice. I wonder if he can actually hit over .300 once he gets called up.

Man, that Huntington team is loaded.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIL/2008_orgbat.shtml>They’ve got legit prospects at catcher, first, short, third and a couple outfielders. One fewer without LaPorta, of course.

I'd rather the Sox face some guys who may or may not pan out...
than see the Indians lock up Sabathia and have the Sox face him for years.

Top ten pick who has done nothing but mash and has clearly mastered AA
What odds would you put on him flaming out that you wouldn’t put on a Sabathia arm injury?

Sabathia is a proven ace when healthy...
although he has to stay healthy, like you say.
LaPorta will probably be a stud but he could bust out, you never know. Sabathia was always like the Indians version of Santana to the Sox. I’d rather the Sox face the possibility of a good hitter.

i generally agree with that
ace >> very good hitter. if the guy ends up being a superstar and cc blows out his arm, of course…but that caveat aside.

so we have no idea what the odds LaPorta will bust are? or the possibility of Sabathia injury?
that makes it hard to evaluate this trade.

Eh, it's a matter of preference
For once, I don’t think SSH is being unreasonable.
Adam Lind comes to mind. Casey Kotchman hasn’t met expectations. Brandon Wood has regressed. Remember Jeremy Reed?
I think Cleveland got a good return in Laporta, but sometimes guys hit a wall in the majors. At any rate, the brief respite will be nice.

I don't think SSH is clearly wrong either. He's definitely right if we're talking max 3-4 year deal.
The Brewers have had a hell of a system of late and it doesnt seem to be a product of luck. Assorted insiders have said quite a lot so far about the guy running the Brewers’ drafts. I’m inclined to believe, particularly since they reached so high for him, that LaPorta is special. If Reed, Lind, Kotchman and Wood have a similar pedigree, I’m unaware of it.

i'm on board with ssh on this one.
i think the odds of a single guy beating the sox on any given night are a lot higher if he’s toeing the rubber than if he’s stepping in the box.

But with varying degrees of success versus the starters.
Might get owned by some of our pitchers and vice versa.

I just hope Milwaukee realizes home much more they'll have to
pony up for the pre-game buffet.
With Prince and C.C. digging in, well, you get the picture.

Theyre on their way up.
Winning teams bring in crowds so I say theyll likely get into negotiating an extension asap.

Nah, they're not going to. Sabathia is going to get out on the open market.
And the Brewers want the picks.

We'll see in a few months.
I really dont hink you give away a player like Laporta if all your thinking is rental and some picks. They could have traded for another pitcher with a few years under control for a prospect like him.

According to what I read (no link, no source, me fail)...er actually I think it was Olney
They are perfectly happy to stock up on picks. Lose Sheets and Sabathia and pick up 4 additional 1st rounders (well, 2 1sts and 2 Supps unless either of the teams that make the signing are in the top 15 and then you get 2 supps per signee, since top 15 is protected). Either way, that’s a ton of picks for a guy with the track record their dude has.
Besides, they have both Hart and Gamel. The collective difference between [those two, 3 months of Sabathia, 45% of whatever money they get from the playoffs (playoff money*chance you make the playoffs = expected return) and the 2 additional picks] and LaPorta et al. can’t be that great either way.

Another way of looking at it
was that they dealt their 2007 1st rounder for 2 2008 first rounders and a lot of cash.

there is no reasonably possible way the smallest market team in baseball
is going to sign cc sabathia.
