well
it wasn’t really meant to be funny. i said previously that i think ozuna would be amenable to accepting an assignment to charlotte, should the sox ask him to. if they don’t and he does become a free agent, i’m not sure i’d expect him to immediately be picked up and put on a major league roster so then pick another AAA destination.

are going to make PT tough, but I bet the Sox find room for him. We seem to treat our ex-players very well, which I like. Being an ex-pro athlete is probably tough to come to terms with.

That's certainly a start
but also be sure to over educate yourself, thus ensuring that you will be poor for a significant amount of time, then you end up being more appreciative of whatever you get. Graduate school is good for this, because you end up getting paid while going to school, but you may also consider going for a second or third bachelors, or joining the peace corps.
I’m not suggesting med school, business, or law school because they are too short and you aren’t stupid enough for med or business school, seeing as you can actually spell and figure out how to post things on SSS, nor a large enough a-hole for law school.
Have I offended everyone yet?

i did consider creating a pablo ozuna: a remembrance fanpost
but i couldn’t really think of anything that was really that memorable that i wanted to write about extensively. he wasn’t truly and spectacularly awful like masset was. he was just generally replacement level. which is somewhat boring.

well
if you look at their current numbers, one might get that impression. it’s not like uribe has been tearing things up this season. i think we all hope that uribe will pick it up offensively but, from the way ozzie has used the two this year, i’m not sure you can make a clear argument either way. what one would base that argument on, and what we all pretty much argue, is that uribe should be able to play third and his defense overall is better than ozuna’s and that should outweigh any difference in offensive value going forward (or that uribe can’t possibly be this bad the whole season). but it’s not like juan was making this a blatantly obvious decision with his play.

the "sox" are not quite a monolithic organization.
i would imagine that, despite what we view as an obvious choice, this wasn’t necessarily a unanimous, slamdunk decision made weeks ago by all the people with input on the decision.

Could just be the most simple answer.
Uribe had not had enough practice over at third yet, and they thought on that day Ozuna was more prepared. May have liked the pitching match up’s those days for Ozuna.

Has Cowley been unconfused about anything?
In May it was “Uribe almost gone”. In July it was “Uribe trade talks heat up”. He didn’t write ONE EFFIN word of speculation about Ozuna being odd man out until last night’s Twitter, after it was obviously leaked to him.
For this great “access” we pay for the S-T?
Lastly, there were numerous posters at SSS who made the case to DFA. Props to them.

and here's why cowley was confused
“Ozuna hit .391 against lefties this year and .353 in June. Uribe? Well, he didn’t shoot anybody. Kind of a head-scratcher”
we can add some “except…” to all of that. but there you go.
and to answer WU’s question, it’s juan who will be the whipping boy now if he doesn’t improve.
uribe, as far as i’m concerned, needs to either start throwing some serious leather or hit the ball (or, more appropriately, some combination thereof) because, while he’s certainly better than ozuna (or should be), that’s faint praise. with ozuna gone, uribe is going to look a heck of a lot more horseshit. he needs to produce because, frankly, it’s not like we have three shitty defenders who require late inning replacement by a gloveman. they’re all above average. sure, uribe is now (likely) the primary backup and will see starts. but that means he needs to start hitting the ball, too, because his overall production at this point is well below replacement level. and there’s a guy in charlotte – and certainly guys available for a pittiance at the trade deadline – who can produce better than uribe has so far.

exactly
his offense has been putrid and his defense has been average. usually you want your bench players to provide as least one above average skill or be relatively average over a few areas. i’m not sure juan is doing that right now, though his versatility could be argued. however, with ramirez on the team and cabrera being the proverbial iron man at SS, i’m not sure his ability to play three positions (well, we think he can play third, i guess) goes that far on this team.

I think he can give above average defense up the middle still
And considering that catchers and SS are pretty much the same offensively these days according to Nate Silver, what’s the problem with having a guy who can be at least average at every infield position? Personally, I’d rather have the depth. Who else are we sticking on the bench anyway at this point? Richar or Getz?

sure, that's the general idea
however, i’m not sure this team particularly needs a guy on the bench who can play SS. i’d have to think about it some more, because there’s the issue regarding how if, god forbid, cabrera or ramirez went down this organization doesn’t have anyone else who can play SS at the major league level; however, setting that concern aside for a moment, the sox are a team that could have someone on the bench who can play “only” 2b/3b/maybe outfield adequately but carried a bit more of a stick than uribe has shown. you know, through more than half the season, cabrera has only not played 35 innings at SS. 2 times he hasn’t started. back up SS, as i’ve stated before, since the acquisition of cabrera, isn’t a huge concern.
but, whatever, if they want to go the safer route and keep a backup SS, i’m fine with that because the difference is probably marginal, at best, and there is some risk.

Let me try to explain it to you.
They both suck offensively. Uribe can play an average to above average SS. Ozuna cannot. In fact we do not have another player in our system that can play even passable MLB SS defense. It was really a no-brainer without some corresponding move to acquire a backup SS. So it was either trade Uribe while receiving a SS in return or DFA Ozuna. There really were no other choices outside of sending Wise or BA down.
