it wasn’t really meant to be funny. i said previously that i think ozuna would be amenable to accepting an assignment to charlotte, should the sox ask him to. if they don’t and he does become a free agent, i’m not sure i’d expect him to immediately be picked up and put on a major league roster so then pick another AAA destination.

That's certainly a start

but also be sure to over educate yourself, thus ensuring that you will be poor for a significant amount of time, then you end up being more appreciative of whatever you get. Graduate school is good for this, because you end up getting paid while going to school, but you may also consider going for a second or third bachelors, or joining the peace corps.

I’m not suggesting med school, business, or law school because they are too short and you aren’t stupid enough for med or business school, seeing as you can actually spell and figure out how to post things on SSS, nor a large enough a-hole for law school.

Have I offended everyone yet?

well

if you look at their current numbers, one might get that impression. it’s not like uribe has been tearing things up this season. i think we all hope that uribe will pick it up offensively but, from the way ozzie has used the two this year, i’m not sure you can make a clear argument either way. what one would base that argument on, and what we all pretty much argue, is that uribe should be able to play third and his defense overall is better than ozuna’s and that should outweigh any difference in offensive value going forward (or that uribe can’t possibly be this bad the whole season). but it’s not like juan was making this a blatantly obvious decision with his play.

the "sox" are not quite a monolithic organization.

i would imagine that, despite what we view as an obvious choice, this wasn’t necessarily a unanimous, slamdunk decision made weeks ago by all the people with input on the decision.

I doubt it...

Ozuna is a 34 year old player with not much talent or skills. He is the type of player who makes it through waivers all the time.

by SSH2005 on Jul 8, 2008 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Could just be the most simple answer.

Uribe had not had enough practice over at third yet, and they thought on that day Ozuna was more prepared. May have liked the pitching match up’s those days for Ozuna.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 8, 2008 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Has Cowley been unconfused about anything?

In May it was “Uribe almost gone”. In July it was “Uribe trade talks heat up”. He didn’t write ONE EFFIN word of speculation about Ozuna being odd man out until last night’s Twitter, after it was obviously leaked to him.
For this great “access” we pay for the S-T?

Lastly, there were numerous posters at SSS who made the case to DFA. Props to them.

and here's why cowley was confused

“Ozuna hit .391 against lefties this year and .353 in June. Uribe? Well, he didn’t shoot anybody. Kind of a head-scratcher”

we can add some “except…” to all of that. but there you go.

and to answer WU’s question, it’s juan who will be the whipping boy now if he doesn’t improve.

uribe, as far as i’m concerned, needs to either start throwing some serious leather or hit the ball (or, more appropriately, some combination thereof) because, while he’s certainly better than ozuna (or should be), that’s faint praise. with ozuna gone, uribe is going to look a heck of a lot more horseshit. he needs to produce because, frankly, it’s not like we have three shitty defenders who require late inning replacement by a gloveman. they’re all above average. sure, uribe is now (likely) the primary backup and will see starts. but that means he needs to start hitting the ball, too, because his overall production at this point is well below replacement level. and there’s a guy in charlotte – and certainly guys available for a pittiance at the trade deadline – who can produce better than uribe has so far.

If there's a baseball equivalent to "never fight a land war in Asia," Vizzini might tell us "never buy the decline years of a player."

by larry on Jul 8, 2008 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree. ozzie needs to get in his ear about putting the bat on the ball. he has looked atrocious at the plate.

though i haven’t seen anything to complain about or praise regarding his defense.

by MarketMaker on Jul 8, 2008 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

exactly

his offense has been putrid and his defense has been average. usually you want your bench players to provide as least one above average skill or be relatively average over a few areas. i’m not sure juan is doing that right now, though his versatility could be argued. however, with ramirez on the team and cabrera being the proverbial iron man at SS, i’m not sure his ability to play three positions (well, we think he can play third, i guess) goes that far on this team.

If there's a baseball equivalent to "never fight a land war in Asia," Vizzini might tell us "never buy the decline years of a player."

by larry on Jul 8, 2008 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he can give above average defense up the middle still

And considering that catchers and SS are pretty much the same offensively these days according to Nate Silver, what’s the problem with having a guy who can be at least average at every infield position? Personally, I’d rather have the depth. Who else are we sticking on the bench anyway at this point? Richar or Getz?

are you trying to use stats around here? what the fuck do you think this is? - MM

by colintj on Jul 8, 2008 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

sure, that's the general idea

however, i’m not sure this team particularly needs a guy on the bench who can play SS. i’d have to think about it some more, because there’s the issue regarding how if, god forbid, cabrera or ramirez went down this organization doesn’t have anyone else who can play SS at the major league level; however, setting that concern aside for a moment, the sox are a team that could have someone on the bench who can play “only” 2b/3b/maybe outfield adequately but carried a bit more of a stick than uribe has shown. you know, through more than half the season, cabrera has only not played 35 innings at SS. 2 times he hasn’t started. back up SS, as i’ve stated before, since the acquisition of cabrera, isn’t a huge concern.

but, whatever, if they want to go the safer route and keep a backup SS, i’m fine with that because the difference is probably marginal, at best, and there is some risk.

Dominoes? soccer? Pablo certainly doesn’t have more value to this team than Uribe. Having Pablo as our only backup infielder would cause the pitching staff to revolt.

by Off the bus running on Jul 8, 2008 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Let me try to explain it to you.

They both suck offensively. Uribe can play an average to above average SS. Ozuna cannot. In fact we do not have another player in our system that can play even passable MLB SS defense. It was really a no-brainer without some corresponding move to acquire a backup SS. So it was either trade Uribe while receiving a SS in return or DFA Ozuna. There really were no other choices outside of sending Wise or BA down.

by bhoov on Jul 8, 2008 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions

it's nice to know that logic wasn't killed.

Ozuna brings more consistency to the plate than Uribe, is a better pinch-hitter and pinch-runner, plus can play all three infield spots, as well as act as an emergency outfielder if need be. He was hitting .391 against left-handers this season, as well as .353 in the month of June.
Uribe was hitting .206 this season with an oh-so-lovely .258 on-base percentage.

something which hasn't been mentioned, perhaps because it's lost in the ozuna-less exuberance we're all experiencing

is that, presumably, jenks is in good enough shape to not be put on the DL.

If there's a baseball equivalent to "never fight a land war in Asia," Vizzini might tell us "never buy the decline years of a player."

cowley is mad!
In one of the stranger White Sox moves of the season, the club announced that Juan Uribe has more value than Pablo Ozuna.
...
the decision to make Ozuna the odd-man out seemed, well, a bit odd. Ozuna brings more consistency to the plate than Uribe, is a better pinch-hitter and pinch-runner, plus can play all three infield spots, as well as act as an emergency outfielder.

pablo ozuna, as a player with five or more years of service time, cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his consent.

If there's a baseball equivalent to "never fight a land war in Asia," Vizzini might tell us "never buy the decline years of a player."

by larry on Jul 8, 2008 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Which is why "designated for assignment" means...

that the Sox have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Ozuna to the minors (but only with his consent).

by SSH2005 on Jul 8, 2008 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

That is a terrible move. Personally I would have rather designated Konerko for assignment than Ozuna. This is not good for the team. With Konerko coming back, Swisher will be moved be playing every day in center field…so what in the hell do you need three center fielders for? Wise is a lefty so I could see keeping him…... Brian Anderson should have been sent down if someone had to go. Konerko, Thome or Swisher should not be on the team. One of them has to go and to get rid of Ozuna for one of them sickens me. Ozuna can fill in at any position, hit lefties, pinch run….I am very upset over this.

colin, as contributing author, is in charge of a minute by minute recap.

proposed form:

5:48pm: kenwo4life@aol.com queries assistant GM rick hahn about why darin erstad was not re-signed after the 2007 season.
5:49pm: larry, screaming that he can no longer handle the idiocy (despite the event starting only four minutes prior and this being the second question asked of rick hahn), lunges out of his seat and begins to beat kenwo4life@aol.com about the head and face while yelling “what is wrong with you people? OPS goddamnit. it’s simple. so simple. erstad sucks. he’s always sucked.” the children in attendance begin to cry.
5:50pm: larry is removed from the room by white sox security.
5:51pm: kenwo4life@aol.com, after his grievous wounds were attended to, is removed from the room by paramedics.
5:52pm: tomquaid73@hotmail.com asks rick hahn why pablo ozuna was designated for assignment since Ozuna brings more consistency to the plate than Uribe, is a better pinch-hitter and pinch-runner, plus can play all three infield spots, as well as act as an emergency outfielder if need be. He was hitting .391 against left-handers this season, as well as .353 in the month of June.Uribe was hitting .206 this season with an oh-so-lovely .258 on-base percentage.

Minor league roundup:

Charlotte 9, Rochester 1 (8 innings)

Danny Richar went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer.
Paul Konerko went 1-for-2 with a double, RBI and a walk.

Charlie Haeger went the distance, allowing seven hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out five.
Jason Bourgeois had three hits and walked once; Dave Cook hit a two-run homer.

schuler wants to unload durham/aurilla/vizquel?
“We have a depth of young pitchers,” Schueler said. “If Brian feels like some of these guys can go out and get us some young players – a first baseman or a third baseman or a middle infielder – I think you’ve got to do it. That’s just me. That’s going to be a tough decision on Brian’s part. The main thing is, we’ve got young pitching stacked up and coming.”

Some team will want Aurilia as a bench guy. Vizquel needs to retire.

by SSH2005 on Jul 8, 2008 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

that's pretty rich

Like NOW the Giants realize they can’t compete and should trade their dead weight…most of which was brought in recently in an foolhardy attempt to compete with “tested veterans”.

by madvillian on Jul 8, 2008 3:42 PM CDT reply actions

Well, in the SJ Mercury News, it was mentioned that the Giants are in the thick of the race in the NL West, 5 games back

and was comparing their position to the ‘97 White Sox. I suppose the fact that Sheuler (sp?) works for the Giants is the reason for the comparison.

What the article failed to mention was that the Giants suck and will not make the playoffs. In addition, the article failed to mention that it was written by the bay area equivalent of kenwo4life@aol.com and that he should be strangled.

Seems every year one team in the NL

sitting like the Giants are in a shitty division, around 5 or so games out despite being a miserable team around 10 games under, thinks about making a move around this time to go get that player that will put them over the top…to 85 wins.

I have no evidience of those, in fact, it’s probably never happened. But it would be cooler if it did.

the post ozuna era begins with this lineup

OC, SS; AJ, C; Dye, RF; Thome, DH; PK, 1B; Swish, CF; Crede, 3B; Ram, 2B. Contreras pitching.

good to see swish back ahead of crede.

depends on who the 9th hitter is, as I assume that fielding 8 doesn't necessarily mean only 8 different batters

or is contreras stepping up to the dish in Q’s absence?
