Ozzie Guillen on Pablo Ozuna's DFA

[Mark Gonzales]

"If some players didn't like the move, well it's easy to do," Guillen said before the game. "Just tell Ozuna to stay here and [they can] go to the minor leagues [in his place]."

Quick, legit question:

I know most real Sox fans would rather have seen Uribe traded or DFA’d, but reality is reality. But now that Pablo’s under the bus wheels…

Albert Belle checks in
Hot-tempered Albert Belle, the former Tribe slugger, called to voice his displeasure with the CC Sabathia trade to Milwaukee.

“Imagine that, the Cleveland Indians trade away another great player because they didn’t want to pay him,” said Belle from his home in Arizona. “The saga continues.”

Belle left the Indians after the 1996 season and signed a five-year, $55 million contract with the White Sox. At the time it was the biggest deal in baseball.

“When is Larry Dolan going to sell the club?” said Belle. “I could buy a piece of it. There are a lot of people on teams making a lot of bad decisions. You don’t always have to spend a lot of money. Look at what Billy Beane does in Oakland.”

Asked if he wanted to get back into the game, Belle said, “I want to be an owner. The Mariners called me and wanted me to come to spring training as a roving hitting coach. But they were going to pay me peanuts.”

Belle, married with three daughters, spends most of his time golfing.

“I’m a golf pro,” said Belle, with a laugh. “At least in my mind I am.”

Belle said he tried to buy pieces of the Cavs and Dodgers without success.

Told the Indians have no power with the exception of Grady Sizemore, Belle said, “They got rid of three of us, Jim Thome, Manny Ramirez and me.”

stay in school kids
On June 6, former Golden Panther senior third baseman Jorge Castillo was selected in the 26th Round (780th overall) by the Chicago White Sox and was the 97th Golden Panther overall to be drafted.
...
Q: How do you feel about the fact that even though you were drafted, you didn’t graduate with a degree from FIU?

A: Oh, I don’t care. Baseball was always my dream and school will always be there. I need only 20 more credits, and I could still get my degree in the fall if things don’t work out. I’m actually taking an online class right now too.

All-Star Game Final Vote races going down to the wire
Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria continues to hold off the charges of his closest two competitors in the American League, Jermaine Dye of the White Sox and Jason Giambi of the Yankees, as each has totaled more than 3.75 million votes. Brian Roberts of the Orioles and Jose Guillen of the Royals round out the current standings in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Rotoworld agrees with Larry...
White Sox purchased the contract of RHP D.J. Carrasco from Triple-A Charlotte.
Carrasco spent three seasons with the Royals, but hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2005. He had a 2.38 ERA and 23/7 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings at Triple-A. At best he’ll be a servicable middle reliever.

Pitcher D.J. Carrasco will replace Bobby Jenks, as the White Sox officially moved their closer to the disabled list on Wednesday.

But what are you / they doing about it?

I don’t want to get too off topic, but the governments of the world aren’t going to move as quickly to cut down on energy consumption / pollution and improve public health / environmental as quickly as individuals.

We all need to quit wasting so much. It takes electricity to pump water, which people love to waste, and that means more coal is burned. People constantly leave lights on, thinking that because they’ve switched to CFLs, it’s okay. Everyone needs to do more, but hardly anyone is willing to do anything if they feel inconvenienced.

If you want some ideas, grist.org has plenty of suggestions, such as putting appliances with LCDs (such as your microwave) on a power strip, turning off the water when you soap up in the shower, using a smart strip for your TV and computer, etc etc.

I’d be willing to continue this discussion via email if you’d like. But I don’t want to burden this site with too much OT stuff.

yeah still, wrapping up come october

i pretty much use smart strips for everything. i use water while i soap up, but its a 3 minute shower you know. i try not to consume whatever that will go to waste or even straight to recycling. i believe in what you’re saying, that populations effect on the environment can be modified at the individual level.

but i also think that government clearly has a role in protecting the public and the environment. with the OSHA act, workplace fatalities, which ‘should’ be preventable, have been cut down by more than 40% annually since passage of the act. industry motherfuckers don’t bring that up. and even though the present administration has much to roll back environmental regulations and make a mockery of the EPA, our air, water is much cleaner since passage of the EPA act.

we can continue the discussion via email if you like.

Cool, wish there were more like you

And I agree that the gov’t should be doing something, but the fact that the government moves so slow, administrations change every 4 years make it much harder to have a consistent policy on the environment. Carter was getting the country moving toward conservation and weening ourselves off oil, but that was nixed quickly with Regan.

Overall I don't care

But since you posed the question…since 2003 I’ve liked the Yankees fan base more than the Red Sox fan base.

Red Sox and Cubs fans are, in general, the two most annoying baseball fan populations. Yankees fans are back a bit, IMHO.

doubt it

i’m pretty sure dan and keith are both inching perilously close to “senile” at this point. not that i would mind seeing this occur. somebody needs to take on these assholes at ESPN.

it occurs to me that it would super friggin easy to DVR the sports center footage and do your own talking over it for the purposes of a YouTube show.

speaking of "taking on the assholes"

i’m really hoping Bill Simmons decides to finally leave ESPN. he’s become slowly less and less relevant over the years and i don’t think it’s an accident that that coincides with ESPN/DISNEY/ABC’s megatakover of everything I watch sports-wise. Well I guess Fox has a few things, like Saturday baseball and CBS has golf and college basketball, but whatever. The point is that how the fuck can you be relevant when you can’t talk about the one dominant trend that’s changed the face of sports watching over the last 10-20 years? Did you catch his post on Deadspin? It was good! And funny! And the commenters actually liked it. There’s friggin hope out there.

I stopped watching when I realized that most of the sports were no longer covered and replaced with pointless shows talking about sports. WWL my ass. They hardly cover anything outside of baseball, hockey, basketball and american football. Fuck ‘em.

BTW, that’s part of the reason I’m a cheap ass (as MM would say) and won’t pay for cable. At least $4 of your monthly bill goes to ESPN whereas ~$0.45 goes to CNN. Not worth it.
