This is good news...
Kevin Youkilis was a late scratch from Sunday’s lineup because of soreness in his left shoulder.
Sean Casey replaced him in the field. J.D. Drew will bat cleanup. Consider Youkilis day-to-day.

Gavin needs to be on point today

Yesterday was just such a huge blow for the Sox, a win today settles the nerves of the team and its suicidal fans.

I was a multiple time all star throughout my little league career. Won 5 championships- 4 in a row- thats more in a row than MJ… (kenwo4life@aol.com)

And in case you guys missed it in the previous thread...

Quoted from SoxTalk.com:

Washburn is on the waiver wire now until 1:30 pm EST tomorrow. Buster Olney on Baseball Tonight just reported from Peter Gammons that the Sox may put a claim in on him.

I don't remember the last trade that the Sox made with the Indians...

but I guess if the Royals will trade with the Sox, the Indians will too. Shapiro probably wouldn’t mind dumping the prorated portion of Byrd’s $8 million dollar contract for this season but Byrd has started pitching well lately and everyone needs pitching. I’m sure Shapiro would still want a decent prospect or two for Byrd.

In any case...

I would say that Washburn is more likely. He is the better pitcher of the two and the Mariners probably want to dump his contract for next year. I doubt Kenny views Byrd as much of an improvement. One could argue that Washburn might actually be an improvement over Contreras, the way he was pitching. But Washburn is probably status quo to Contreras at the very least.

Here it is...
According to New York Newsday, the Yankees and Mariners “continue to talk about what level of prospect the Yankees would give up in return for” Jarrod Washburn.
Washburn started Sunday and pitched brilliantly against the Blue Jays despite previous reports that a trade was on the verge of taking place, but apparently the two sides are still haggling over details. The newspaper reports that the Yankees are willing to take on Washburn’s entire remaining contract, but aren’t willing to do that and send the Mariners a legitimate prospect. Meanwhile, the Mariners are said to be holding out for Melky Cabrera or Brett Gardner.

Source: Newsday

The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that the Rockies were “shocked” when the Mariners asked for both Dexter Fowler and Casey Weathers in exchange for Jarrod Washburn.
No wonder the Yankees backed out of the rumored deal for Washburn. The newspaper also notes that the Mariners asked for “Jon Niese and/or Fernando Martinez or another top prospect” from the Mets, which is even more laughable.

speaking of the yankees

Ian Kennedy is wearing out his welcome in NY very quickly. With LaRoche already moved, I think Kennedy might be the best undervalued unproven player who gets moved this off-season only to make a big impact next year. Sox need to get in on that entirely hypothetical action.

Like it

On that same note, I would be extremely interested to know how much of an effort Kenny put in this offseason for Josh Hamilton. He seems like exactly the type of player he goes after. Obviously, the Sox didn’t have a Volquez in their system but an outfield of Q, Dye and Hamilton would be quite salivating.

so optimal lineup construction is only worth a few runs over a season.

still doesn’t make much sense to give those runs away when it is clear based on any objective measure that certain guys don’t make much sense in certain spots.

"anybody interested in grabbing a couple of burgers and hittin' the cemetery?"

by Toonderstrook on Aug 10, 2008 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree.

i’ve never understood why people say that lineup construction’s relative unimportance excuses it being done poorly. it’s a simple thing to correct, and in the sox’ case it is a significant change in obp available.

You're on thin fucking ice my pedigree chums, and I shall be under it when it breaks. Now, fuck off.

by MarketMaker on Aug 10, 2008 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

it might be worth a couple runs

and given the things that are really wrong with this team, i really don’t see the possibility of a few runs over the course of a season being a big difference. i’m not saying it’s not personally annoying, but there’s been so much written about this and no one can find something that says it costs anything substantial. so why not let the guy who’s managing his players figure out where they’re happiest?

me: so there isn’t much that can be even estimated at this point? and what if we assume he’s 36 as listed?

him: Still impossible to tell until after surgery and if its able to be reattached normally. The question isn’t IF he could come back – there’s a pretty good return rate there—but if he will want to go through a year’s rehab.

“New players, new roles”

By Mark Gonzales, 1:20 p.m.

As of now, D.J. Carrasco will take Jose Contreras’ spot in the starting rotation for the White Sox. That would put Carrasco in line to pitch Thursday against Kansas City, his former team.

Lance Broadway, recently promoted from Triple-A Charlotte, will serve as a long reliever after pitching mostly as a starter.

Horacio Ramirez, a former starter with Atlanta, will stay in the bullpen in a left-handed specialist role that he succeeded in with Kansas City before joining the Sox in a trade late Saturday night.

Chris Getz, promoted with Broadway from Charlotte, will serve as a utility infielder.

Third baseman Josh Fields, demoted to Charlotte last night, will have to work on his fielding to regain the coaching staff’s confidence.

they come out of the woodwork. back in 05 at towel day i wound up snapping and telling a 12 year old boston fan god didn’t love him. in my defense, he cheered after manny hit the game winner in the ninth immediately after crede dropped a foul ball that would have ended the inning. the kid also had red hair, freckles, and braces. i had to say it.

Actually there are probably a lot of them.

You gotta understand that Boston has a regional fanbase. Pretty much all of New England PLUS the nationwide bandwagon. And there are lots of Irish Catholics up thataway and they love to have babies, and those babies love to move places and be obnoxious. So there you go.
