How badly are the Sox in trouble: Starting Pitching
A short synopsis:
-Danks: Fine
-Buehrle: Fine, but far less okay as Danks
-Floyd: On his way down, but you all knew that already
-Vazquez: Yeah, not so good.
-Fifth Starter: Not what we want if we want to make the playoffs.
And, unfortunately, this White Sox rotation does not look like the rock-solid group that it was before the All-Star break. John Danks is the closest the White Sox have to a guarantee stopper in their rotation, and if the White Sox want to make the playoffs, they're going to need Buehrle and Vazquez to step up and assume the 1-2 ace roles they were expected to fill before the start of the season.

when gavin get's his curveball established early he's a good stopper

i think it would be pretty sweet if ssh's kid and kenwo's kid had offspring together...whether you believe in nature or nurture, it wouldn’t be boring.-larry

Exactly...
But if he can’t establish that, he can’t rely on his other pitches to get him through an outing.
Will...I...be...able...to...play...softball...tomorrow?
Oh, no, Mr. Scioscia. At this time tomorrow, you'll barely be able to breathe.

I believe Gavin
is something like 7-1 following a loss. That is what stoppers do. Hence why they are called stoppers.

the 49 runs the white sox scored in those 7 wins had nothing to do with it. all gavin the stopper.

more on gavin the stopper.
floyd has started 11 times following a white sox loss. in 4 of those 11, he has gone at least 7 without giving up more than one run. in the other 7, not so much.
gavin’s overall numbers in starts following sox loss:
11 starts
68 innings pitched
53 hits
36 runs/32 earned
28 walks (3.71 bb/9)
49 strikeouts (6.49 k/9)
1.19 whip
4.24 era
although gavin is 7-1 in those 11 starts with 3 no decisions, as mentioned above the white sox offense has scored quite a few runs in those games (73 in 11 games, or 6.64 runs/game). and moreover, this is not a case of a few blowouts running up the white sox run total. in the 11 games floyd has started following a loss, the sox have put up 2 runs once (floyd’s only loss), 5 runs once, 6 runs three times, 7 runs three times, 8 runs once, 9 runs once, and 10 runs once. oh, and the games in which floyd pitched exceptionally well? sox scored 6, 7, 7, and 8 in those four.
so, kenwo, what is it exactly that makes gavin the stopper here?

the fact that
he won 7 and lost 1. Sure the offense hit well. He still could have gotten his ass kicked and got the loss. He pitched good enough for the team to win.

so the fact he didn't get his ass kicked makes him a stopper?

seems the sox offense would be the stopper when gavin happens to be on the hill.

no one said we didn't like gavin ya shitcock....
open your fucking eyes and put two and two together…we’re just saying even though he’s 7-1 following a loss…his numbers that aren’t W/L aren’t that great…he’s had a solid year backed by solid run support…no one’s taking it away from him….and is this what you look like

Exactly
He’s done a great job for a 5th starter, but he’s not a stopper by any means. I don’t think there are any real White Sox fans disappoitned in what he has done, but it doesn’t mean we think he’s a stopper. He’s pitched better than expectations, that’s all you can really ask out of a guy you expected to be a 5th starter.

I'll agree with you that, on average, we are a group of assclowns, but would you please refer to some statistical proof that Floyd and Washburn are similar pitchers or that Floyd is significantly better?
By casually looking through posts on this site, you should be able to glean that FIP is a relatively good way to compare pitchers (colintj, furby, or others, please correct me if I’m wrong). Comparing the FIP of Floyd to Washburn results in the following:
Year Floyd FIP (Innings) Washburn FIP (Innings)
2008 4.99 (140) 4.52 (135.2)
2007 6.07 (70) 4.77 (193.2)
2006 7.18 (54) 4.78 (1872)
2005 6.40 (26) 4.35 (177.1)
2004 4.04 (28.1) 4.52 (149.1)
2003 n/a 4.97 (207.1)
2002 n/a 3.71 (206)
2001 n/a 4.37 (193.1)
Kenwo, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but a little research to frame your argument works a lot better than just calling people names.
Also, I think what people have been getting at is Washburn is a better option than the other pitchers the Sox have available for a 5th stater (Broadway, Richard, Carasco, etc). If Seattle was willing to part with Washburn for cash or any “prospect” not named Poreda or Fields, I would certainly do it. What other option do we have for a 5th starter next year? At 10 million, Washburn isn’t ideal, but IMO he isn’t a bad idea either.
