Ibanez told me he was informed, by someone in-the-know, upon arriving at the park today that a claim on him had been put in. Washburn also received similar information.The team now has until tomorrow to work out a deal. Actually, it has 48 1/2 “business day hours’’ from when the claim was made. So, if it was made today, it would be Friday. If yesterday, which is what folks are saying, it would be tomorrow. Or else, it can pull the players back. Or, allow them to be claimed for salary owed. That won’t happen with Ibanez, who is owed less than $2 million and still has value. It might with Washburn, owed roughly $13 million from now through 2009.
With Washburn, it could be limited. I keep hearing the St. Louis Cardinals might be the team but I can’t say for certain. I know that’s not too precise. But nothing is.
If Kenny didn’t claim Washburn before he got to the Cardinals, that would suck balls.

I don’t see the Tigers, Rangers, or Blue Jays claiming him because they are too far out of contention. I guess the Twins could have claimed Washburn to screw the Sox out of getting him but they may have been too afraid of being stuck with his salary if the Mariners let them have him for nothing.

Great time at the Cell last night, though I hardly watched the game. I did see Buehrls doing his damndest to keep his 2:17 game time average on pace (and it came in exactly at 2:17 – the man is a machine). No walks by Sox pitching, good “D” by Juannie (Joe who?) and an appearance by the old man (no, not me) at the plate and in CF (though his catch didn’t make the Top 10 on ESPN – looks like they’re wise to his Eric Byrnes-like ways).
Got absolutely ripped and stuffed myself – great time at the ballpark, plus the Sox “W”. And they sure have enough employees directing traffic – only took 3-5 minutes to get out of Lot “D” and onto the Ryan. Patronage is alive and well in Chicago, I am happy to say.

its not that swish’s stats vs lefties is that much better than griffey’s. if outfield in oakland is more spacious, maybe better to go with swish who is more mobile.

i think you need to take a slightly more nuanced approach to comparing the two.

are there individual split stats for der's or some kind of zone ratings by stadium
but fuck, griffey wasn’t playing center fulltime for the last year and half, makes doing comps more difficult.

well, lifetime, swish has played way more games there of course, but his ops is about 20 points greater than griffey’s, would you consider that a marginal difference? lifetime is a not a good comp, i would go the last three years, but i don’t think you can make a meaningful comparison because jr didn’t play enough games there.

Paul Byrd move a cash-only transaction...
The Boston Herald reports that “there will be no ‘player to be named’ in the trade that brought Paul Byrd to Boston.”
According to the newspaper, the Indians agreed to trade Byrd without getting a player in return because the Red Sox were the only team willing to absorb the entire $2 million remaining on his contract. The impending free agent is scheduled to make his Red Sox debut Friday.
