A lot of people are beginning to refer to Gavin Floyd as the stopper for the White Sox. He's 7-1 following a Sox loss in 11 starts while posting a not overly impressive 4.84 ERA. Building off the success towards the end of last season, Gavin started off the year on fire. He flirted with two no-hitters early in the year against divisional opponents and won 7 of his first 12 starts. I remember Cheat's post from earlier in the year about how no one really knew how Gavin was doing it with such ease. When he's on with his pitches, Floyd is downright filthy. His curveball has a nasty bite to it when he's throwing it right. Looking through his stats, he's not turning into a groundball or flyout pitcher. Those two figures are basically the same. What I don't like his the 3.65 BB/9. The formula for Gavin's success seems to be simply this: Through the curveball for strikes early and then being able to work hitters to where he can through the curve out of the strike zone and get them to chase. He has used his slider more than the curve this year although almost exclusively early in the count. Sporting non-efficient pitches has led to rolling breakingballs and meat fastballs that are served out into the bleachers and make us go all ssh on the world.
Danks has developed his changeup this year. Gavin's change is still not at what it could/should be and it seems he doesn't want to use it at times. A good change for Floyd that he can use with two strikes will only lead to better success and can open up for high fastball or old uncle charlie in the dirt.
He's given up 10 ER his past two starts yet the Sox have won both of them. Gavin has the ability to win without his best stuff and has done that a few times this year, battling through rough patches from the defense to give the team a few more solid innings so that the offense has a chance to come back (see 7/25 vs. Tigers). The Sox have posted a 16-7 record when Gavin pitches which is an encouraging stat considering what we expected out of spring training. He's got a real solid chance at winning 17-18 games this year which is a huge plus. Oh and he's 3-1 vs. the twins this year, a stat that makes me smile.
It's looking like Gavin is going to prove our projections wrong by posting a sub 4 ERA this year so far but it looks like we might be dead on with the innings pitched. Who knows what to expect from Gavin the rest of the way as he's been up then down then up up up down up down. It's hard to say what you're gonna get from him. I'll just end by saying good curveball=good gavin eh curveball=4-5 ER gavin bad curveball=5/11 and 7/11 gavin (see gamelogs).
this one may not be as in-depth as with danks but i don't have as much time to do it as i did yesterday...so hopefully this can serve as your guys thread for the rest of the night to go along with cheat's recap...up next is javy vazquez.....oh boy!

No I think you did a real good job.
I always like hearing people’s opinions on players and what they can do better. I think it can be a little difficult to evaluate a pitcher because of the variables involved including the game plan, the change in game plan due to certain pitches not working, score of the game, and the catchers feel for the game. I would imagine the reason he is throwing more sliders than curveballs would be because he is too strong at the beginning of games and the rotation is too fast to throw a curve ball for strikes, once he starts getting fatigued his curve ball usually starts snapping off for strikes.

yeah i hear ya dude....but my thing is
that it’s either coop not confident or gavin telling coop he’s not confident enough with it (the change)….i’m not taking anything away from him i mean just look at the year he’s had without utilizing it….but when i see vazquez dominate with the change….and danks mature with his the way he has and then burls getting guys out in front with it….i’d love to see gavin develop that pitch and try to get it to the point where guys aren’t just anticipating that hook or the fastball with two strikes…does that make sense?

the offense shuts down on the poor guy. No way does Ozzie wait for a game four to start Danks. In my opinion, he’s the best we’ve got, he’s starting game uno of each series.

White Sox optioned RHP Lance Broadway to Triple-A Charlotte.
Broadway pitched well on Thurday, but the Sox want to bolster their bullpen. Lance isn’t eligible to be recalled for ten days barring an injury to a pitcher, so the Sox will likely turn to D.J. Carrasco to make a spot start against the Mariners in the meantime.
This makes it sound like Thornton is headed to the D.L. He did have back issues some weeks ago.

The Twins offered Boof Bonser for Jarrod Washburn...
and were willing to pick up Washburn’s salary.
So I made more calls, and finally confirmed it: The Twins were dead serious about Washburn. That’s how desperate they’ve become to address their bullpen. They were willing to take on Washburn’s contract and move a starting pitcher into a relief role.
The Twins picking up that kind of salary would have been pretty surprising. I wonder what Kenny has in store for the starter against the Mariners? The options are…
1.) Someone in the organization other than Broadway (Carrasco, Richard, etc.)
2.) Broadway, if a pitcher is headed to the D.L.
3.) A waiver-trade acquisition (Maddux?)

Greg Maddux – Maddux is earning $10MM this year and will only accept a trade to a West Coast team. The Dodgers wanted him but asked the Padres to pay more than 80% of his remaining salary according to Peter Gammons.
Even though he might not be ideal for The Cell (see what I did there, Kenny?), he would be a great option otherwise. The pro-rated portion of Maddux’s $11 million dollar contract for the rest of this season would be $2.75 million and then he is a free agent after the season is over. So no worries about having a big salary for next season like Washburn.

Waiver options...
Instead of celebrating with his teammates on their charter flight to Oakland, the right-hander was given an airline ticket back to Triple-A Charlotte.
What is unknown is whether the ticket was one-way or has an open return. The Sox insist they need a reliever more than a starter, so it looks like left-hander Clayton Richard, who has performed both roles, will be called back unless the Sox pick up some unexpected waiver-wire help.
Not sure what other starting pitchers than Maddux have cleared waivers but righty reliever Al Reyes is still out there. Reyes was DFA’ed by the Rays last Saturday and they have ten days to decide what to do with him.
